To activate a new Xfinity Gateway, connect it to an active cable outlet and power, then use the Xfinity app while signed in as the account’s Primary user or a Manager. The app checks the connection and guides you through Wi-Fi setup. If you’re bringing your own modem, first confirm it works at your address and supports your speed tier.
What to have ready
- Your Xfinity Gateway or approved customer-owned modem, coax cable, and power cord.
- A phone, tablet, or computer with the Xfinity app, plus the Xfinity ID and password for the account.
- Account access as the Primary user or a Manager. Xfinity states, “You must be the Primary user or a Manager to activate the device.”
A typical leased Internet/Voice Getting Started Kit includes the Gateway, coax cable (except fiber-to-the-unit installations), and power cord. Xfinity says no tools are needed to connect the kit. See what’s included in a Getting Started Kit.
How do I activate my new Xfinity modem?
- Connect the coax cable. Attach one end to an active cable outlet and the other to the Gateway’s coax port. Finger-tighten both connections.
- Connect power. Plug the Gateway’s power cord into the device and a wall outlet. Place it according to the device instructions, leaving room around it and, if practical, positioning it a few feet above the floor for Wi-Fi coverage.
- Start activation in the app. Open the Xfinity app, scan the activation QR code if your equipment provides one, and sign in. Follow the on-screen prompts. For a replacement Gateway without an activation prompt, go to Account → Set up equipment or devices → Xfinity Gateway or Modem under Internet.
- Run the outlet check. Follow the app’s connection check. If it detects an active outlet, continue to set or confirm your Wi-Fi network name and password.
- Finish setup and reconnect devices. Confirm the settings and complete activation. Connect your phone and other devices to the resulting Wi-Fi network.
For a replacement, using the same Wi-Fi name and password as before can help devices reconnect without setting them up one by one.

Can I activate it in the Xfinity app?
Yes. For the ordinary cable Gateway and the approved customer-owned modem flow, activation runs through the Xfinity app. Sign in as the account’s Primary user or a Manager, then follow the app’s equipment setup prompts. How long does activation take?
Xfinity’s activation instructions estimate about 20 minutes for activation. The same support guidance estimates that home network setup can take up to 10 minutes after confirmation. These are estimates, not guaranteed completion times; Xfinity’s new-customer instructions describe activation as taking a few minutes. See Xfinity’s new-customer activation steps.
What if Xfinity can’t find an active cable outlet?
Try another cable outlet in your home and run the app’s check again. If no outlet works, use the technician appointment option in the app. If activation stalls for another reason, check that the coax and power connections are secure. Xfinity recommends unplugging the Gateway for 30 seconds, plugging it back in, and retrying. Other errors can be routed to an agent through the app.

Should I use an Xfinity Gateway or my own modem?

When should I activate the equipment?
Xfinity says most orders can be activated from the equipment’s arrival date through the following seven days. If you are porting an Xfinity Voice number, the assigned Firm Order Commitment date is different: Xfinity says activation must happen on that date and warns that missing it could result in losing dial tone or the number.
