For a new iPhone purchase in the United States, Xfinity Mobile and Apple’s old iPhone Upgrade Program are not equivalent choices anymore. Apple says its iPhone Upgrade Program is coming to an end. Existing members can continue their current 24-month loan and own that phone after the loan is paid, but a new shopper should compare Xfinity’s plan-conditional upgrade offers with Apple’s current purchase, financing, or lease options—not assume the legacy program is still open for enrollment.
There is no universal cheapest option. The right answer depends on your service plan, how long you will keep the phone, trade-in value, coverage, taxes, credit approval, and whether you need to leave the carrier before promotional credits finish.
The decision in one minute
- Already enrolled in Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program? Keep making the scheduled payments if the phone suits you. After 24 payments, the loan closes and you own the iPhone. If you are eligible for another upgrade, compare Apple’s current routes and carrier offers rather than expecting another enrollment in the legacy program.
- Already on Xfinity Mobile and willing to keep an eligible plan? Check the exact Upgrade Anytime or Elite Upgrade offer on your account. Mobile Plus and Premium Unlimited are named as eligible plans, but credits depend on device, account, trade-in, and plan conditions.
- Choosing a carrier and phone from scratch? Price the complete commitment: service, device installments, AppleCare+ or other coverage, taxes due at checkout, trade-in value, and the cost of leaving before credits end.
- Want flexibility to switch carriers? Be cautious with any offer whose savings require a qualifying plan. A low monthly device payment can become expensive if canceling or downgrading triggers repayment or forfeits future credits.
This comparison is United States-focused and reflects official terms and pages available on October 13, 2026. Device prices, promotions, taxes, trade-in values, and account eligibility can change.
Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program is ending
Apple’s official program page says, “The iPhone Upgrade Program is coming to an end, and we want to say thanks for being a member.” That changes the question behind this comparison. The program remains relevant for people who already have one of its loans, but it should not be presented as a normal new-purchase path in 2026.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
What existing members can do
An existing member can continue the current loan. The United States terms describe a 24-month, 0% APR installment loan for the retail price of an eligible iPhone and a selected AppleCare+ plan. The agreement is with Citizens Bank, N.A., doing business as Citizens One. After 24 payments, the loan ends and the member owns the phone.
Members who have made enough payments to qualify for another iPhone can select a different current purchase or financing route. Apple identifies Apple Upgrade, carrier deals, Apple financing, and outright purchase as possible alternatives. A replacement loan or other financing application can require a new credit check; eligibility is not automatic simply because the previous loan was in good standing.
The legacy upgrade threshold and condition rules
The legacy terms required at least the equivalent of 12 installments before exercising the upgrade option. The member also had to remain in good standing, maintain continuous AppleCare+, and return a phone in acceptable physical and operational condition. Wireless service had to be activated with an eligible carrier, and the original application required a credit check.
Those conditions matter when an existing member decides whether to upgrade early. A phone that is damaged, locked by a security feature, or missing required components may not qualify for the expected route. Check the agreement attached to your account rather than relying on a general description of the former program.
Apple Upgrade is a different product
Apple’s July 2026 United States announcement identifies Apple Upgrade as a current lease option, not a continuation of the old iPhone Upgrade Program loan. For iPhones, Apple lists AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon as eligible carrier choices and excludes prepaid plans. Apple describes leased iPhones as unlocked. Xfinity Mobile is not on that carrier list, so do not assume an Apple Upgrade iPhone lease can be combined with Xfinity service.

Lease approval and eligibility still apply. Ending a lease early can incur substantial fees, and the end-of-term requirements are those of the applicable lease, not the ownership outcome of the old 24-month loan. Read whether the phone must be returned or otherwise resolved at the end of the lease before comparing its monthly figure with an installment plan.
A dated Apple price example
Apple’s 2026 example for an iPhone 17 Pro 256GB lists a $1,099 purchase price, $31.99 per month for 24 months, or $45.99 per month for 12 months. The figures exclude taxes and trade-in credit and are an example, not an individualized quote or a promise that the same model and terms will remain available. The monthly amount alone says nothing about carrier service, coverage, ownership, or lease obligations.

Xfinity does not offer one universal upgrade contract. The offer attached to your account and plan controls the requirements. Its Upgrade Anytime FAQ names Mobile Plus and Premium Unlimited as eligible plans. The April 2026 Mobile Plus Elite Upgrade and Elite Upgrade terms describe related, plan-specific programs with their own conditions.
Upgrade Anytime in the FAQ
When all requirements are met and the upgrade is completed, Xfinity says it will apply a credit equal to the old phone’s remaining device-payment balance within three billing cycles. The new phone’s discount is applied as monthly account credits over that phone’s device-payment term.
The old phone must pass the applicable review. If its condition is rejected or its IMEI does not match the device-payment plan, Xfinity may return it and require you to pay the old balance. Promotional discounts can also change. Treat the credit as conditional until the trade-in is accepted and the account shows the promised adjustment.

Elite Upgrade and plan-specific terms
The April 2026 terms require an eligible plan, a new device on a device-payment plan, and surrender or trade-in of the existing device. The account must be in good standing, and the device identity must match the payment plan or a qualifying replacement. For Elite Upgrade, the existing phone must be in good working order, and security features such as Find My iPhone must be turned off.

Use the terms tied to the offer shown for your account. A requirement in one Elite Upgrade document should not be treated as a promise that every Xfinity customer receives the same benefit.
What happens if you change or cancel the plan
Xfinity warns that canceling or downgrading Mobile Plus or Premium Unlimited can make you repay any payment-plan credit applied to the traded-in device and lose remaining discounts on the new device. The qualifying service plan is therefore part of the phone’s price. Include the plan’s expected cost for the entire device-payment term, not just the advertised handset payment.
Device-payment-plan eligibility and taxes
Xfinity says eligibility for a device payment plan may depend on credit screening or payment history. Applicable sales tax is paid upfront. Its device-payment FAQ says an early upgrade may waive the remaining balance when the customer qualifies and takes a like-new phone to an Xfinity retail store. That is not an unconditional balance wipe; confirm the route, condition standard, store requirement, and account-specific offer before handing over the phone.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Apple iPhone Upgrade Program | Xfinity Mobile upgrade route |
|---|---|---|
| Can a new customer join? | Apple says the program is coming to an end; do not assume new enrollment is available. | Offers are account- and plan-dependent; check the current Xfinity terms. |
| What happens to an existing customer? | Continue the 24-month loan; after 24 payments, you own the phone. An eligible member can choose a new route for a future iPhone. | Meet the offer’s plan, account, device, and trade-in requirements to receive the stated credit. |
| Payment structure | Legacy terms: 24-month, 0% APR loan for the iPhone and selected AppleCare+ plan. | Device-payment plan with any promotional savings delivered as account credits over the term. |
| Credit approval | Credit check required; a new application and credit check are required for a replacement loan. | Device-payment-plan availability may depend on credit screening or payment history. |
| Service requirement | Legacy program required activation with an eligible carrier. Apple Upgrade iPhone leasing lists AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon and excludes prepaid plans. | Upgrade Anytime names Mobile Plus and Premium Unlimited; specific offers can require a qualifying Xfinity plan and Xfinity Internet. |
| When can you upgrade? | Legacy terms required at least the equivalent of 12 installments, plus good standing, continuous AppleCare+, and an acceptable device. | Timing and eligibility depend on the exact Xfinity program, device-payment plan, account standing, and trade-in. |
| Condition and identity | Returned phone must meet the legacy program’s physical and operational condition requirements. | Rejected condition or an IMEI mismatch can cause the phone to be returned and the old balance to become payable; Elite Upgrade requires a working phone and security features turned off. |
| Who owns the phone? | After 24 loan payments, the existing member owns the phone. | The old phone must be surrendered or traded in for the relevant upgrade credit. The new phone follows its device-payment terms. |
| Taxes | Taxes and trade-in treatment depend on the order and quote. | Applicable sales tax is due upfront. |
| Leaving early | Lease termination can incur substantial fees; the legacy loan has its own payoff and upgrade terms. | Canceling or downgrading a qualifying plan can require repayment of old-device credits and ends remaining new-device discounts. |
How to compare the real cost
Use the same ownership period for both options. A 24-month comparison is usually clearer than comparing one provider’s monthly handset number with another provider’s promotional credit.

- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.

Build the total-cost figure
- Start with the phone price. Record the exact model, storage capacity, and retail price in the quote.
- Add upfront charges. Include sales tax, activation or other disclosed fees, and any amount due at checkout. Xfinity specifically states that applicable sales tax is paid upfront.
- Add device payments. Multiply the quoted monthly payment by the number of months, then subtract only credits you are actually eligible to receive. Keep the old-device balance separate until the trade-in is accepted.
- Add service. For Xfinity, include Mobile Plus or Premium Unlimited for as long as the promotion requires, plus any required Xfinity Internet service. For an Apple route, include the eligible carrier plan or lease requirement.
- Add coverage. The legacy Apple loan included a selected AppleCare+ plan. Include the cost of AppleCare+ or another coverage plan in any modern comparison instead of treating protection as free.
- Subtract a realistic trade-in value. Use the value shown for your exact model and condition. Do not count a promotional credit before confirming the qualifying trade-in, line, plan, and payment-plan requirements.
- Price the exit. Ask what you would owe if you switch carriers, downgrade the plan, cancel Internet service, return a rejected trade-in, or terminate a lease before its end.
A useful worksheet is:
| Cost item | Apple route | Xfinity route |
|---|---|---|
| Phone installments or lease payments | Use the exact quote; the $31.99 and $45.99 figures are only Apple’s dated iPhone 17 Pro example. | Use the account-specific device-payment quote and term. |
| Service over the comparison period | Use the eligible carrier or lease requirement. | Include the qualifying Xfinity plan and any required Internet service. |
| Coverage | Include AppleCare+ or the selected coverage. | Include the protection option you would actually keep. |
| Upfront tax and fees | Use the checkout total. | Include upfront sales tax and disclosed fees. |
| Trade-in and promotional credits | Use only credits shown as eligible for your order. | Verify trade-in condition, IMEI, line, plan, and credit schedule. |
| Exit or payoff exposure | Check loan payoff or lease-termination terms. | Check repayment of old-device credits and loss of future discounts after a plan change. |
The option with the smaller handset payment is not necessarily the option with the smaller total cost.

You already have an Apple Upgrade Program loan
First decide whether keeping the phone through payment 24 is acceptable. That path produces ownership and avoids making a new application immediately. If you want a newer iPhone sooner, confirm that you have made the required payments, maintained AppleCare+, and kept the phone in acceptable condition. Then compare Apple’s current purchase, financing, lease, or carrier choices with the remaining obligations on your existing account.
You already use Xfinity Mobile
Sign in to the account and identify the exact offer name, eligible plan, remaining device balance, required trade-in condition, IMEI rule, credit schedule, and plan duration. If you expect to keep Mobile Plus or Premium Unlimited for the full term, an upgrade credit that clears the old balance may be valuable. If you may switch plans or carriers, calculate the repayment and lost-credit exposure first.
You want Xfinity service and a new iPhone
Do not use an expired headline promotion as your expected price. An Xfinity device page showed an iPhone 18 Pro offer requiring a qualifying trade-in, a device-payment plan, Mobile Plus, and Xfinity Internet, but that displayed offer ended October 8, 2026. Another deals page names iPhone 18 Pro Max and lists qualifying trade-in, a new Mobile Plus line, and a device-payment plan. Verify that any offer is still available, and read its end date and conditions on the order you are placing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Check whether your carrier is one of Apple’s listed choices—AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon—and whether the plan is non-prepaid. Do not plan to pair the Apple Upgrade iPhone lease with Xfinity Mobile unless Apple explicitly adds that carrier to the applicable offer. Model the end-of-lease return or resolution and the possible cost of early termination.

You expect to change carriers soon
Prefer a quote that remains affordable after the service change, or buy the phone outright if the flexibility is worth the upfront cost. A conditional Xfinity credit or lease can be a poor fit when your service plans are uncertain because leaving can create a payoff, repayment, return, or lost-credit obligation.
A practical check before ordering
- Identify your status: existing Apple loan, existing Xfinity customer, or new shopper.
- Write down the exact model and storage. Monthly figures are not comparable across different phones.
- Open the current terms. Confirm carrier, plan, Internet, line, trade-in, condition, IMEI, credit, and payment-term requirements.
- Request the checkout total. Capture tax, fees, down payment, monthly payment, term, and coverage.
- Calculate the service commitment. Multiply the required plan cost by the months during which credits must remain active.
- Stress-test an early exit. Ask support what happens if you downgrade, cancel, move the line, fail the trade-in inspection, or return the phone.
- Keep evidence. Save the offer summary, device serial or IMEI, trade-in receipt, and promised credit schedule.
- Inspect the account after the upgrade. Check that the old balance credit appears within the stated period and that new monthly credits begin as promised.
Pitfalls and how to recover
Comparing a promotional payment with a full price
Symptom: one option appears nearly free per month. Fix: add service, coverage, taxes, trade-in requirements, and the complete device term before deciding.
Assuming the old Apple program is open
Symptom: you search for a new iPhone Upgrade Program loan and cannot find an enrollment path. Fix: treat the program as legacy, keep an existing loan on schedule, and evaluate Apple’s current purchase, financing, lease, or carrier alternatives.
Recommended Free Tools
Changing an Xfinity plan after receiving credits
Symptom: a downgrade or cancellation produces a larger-than-expected bill. Fix: ask Xfinity for the exact repayment of old-device credits and the remaining new-device discounts before changing the plan.
Trade-in rejection
Symptom: the old phone is returned because its condition or IMEI does not match. Fix: keep the device until inspection is complete, disable Find My iPhone and other security locks where required, photograph its condition, retain the shipping or store receipt, and ask how the old balance will be billed if the promotion is denied.
Forgetting ownership terms
Symptom: a lease payment looks cheaper than a loan, but the phone cannot simply be kept at the end. Fix: read the lease’s end-of-term return or resolution rules and compare them with the Apple legacy loan’s ownership after 24 payments.
Bottom line
For most new shoppers in October 2026, the meaningful comparison is not Xfinity Mobile versus a still-open Apple iPhone Upgrade Program. Apple’s legacy program is ending. Compare Xfinity’s conditional upgrade only if its qualifying plan, trade-in rules, device credits, and service cost fit your expected time on Xfinity. Compare Apple’s current purchase, financing, lease, or carrier choices when you need a different carrier or more predictable ownership terms.
