Start with Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, then play Xenoblade Chronicles 2. That is the clearest route for a newcomer because it follows release order and lets you encounter each game on its own terms. It is not a story requirement: Nintendo’s official descriptions give the games different protagonists, settings and battle systems, and do not say that the first game must be completed to understand the second.

If you are also deciding where Torna – The Golden Country fits, treat that as a separate question. Torna is set 500 years before Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The simplest spoiler-conscious choice is to finish the main game before Torna, although Monolith Soft executive producer Tetsuya Takahashi once suggested an alternative mid-game placement.

The short answer for a first-time player

Play Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition first and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 second. The recommendation is about release and entry order, not a claim that one game is objectively superior or that the first is a prerequisite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The two releases introduce separate casts and worlds in their official descriptions. Definitive Edition follows Shulk and his companions as they oppose the Mechon after Shulk discovers the Monado’s power. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 follows Rex and Pyra across Alrest, where people live on colossal Titans while seeking Elysium. Because the premises are presented independently, you can begin with either if your circumstances demand it; the order above simply gives a newcomer the most straightforward series path.

Think of that answer as a default rather than a rule. If one premise is the reason you want to play, that attraction is a perfectly sensible tie-breaker. Likewise, if you only own one title, starting with the copy already in your library avoids turning a recommendation into an unnecessary purchase. The important distinction is between a practical series path and a claim that the games must be played in a particular narrative order.

How the two games differ

Question Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Central characters Shulk and his companions Rex and Pyra, alongside Drivers and their Blades
World and conflict A struggle against the Mechon after Shulk gains the Monado Alrest, a world built around colossal Titans, and a search for Elysium
Combat emphasis in Nintendo’s description Real-time battles using party positioning, future-seeing, equipment and weapon-skill upgrades, gems and Chain Attacks Drivers partner with Blades, use their weapons and powers, and switch between Blades during battle
Switch release date May 29, 2020 December 1, 2017
Story dependency established by the official descriptions No requirement to play it before the second game is stated No requirement to play the first game is stated

This table is a description of design and premise, not a quality ranking. The official material does not provide a comparative score, completion-time average or player survey that could establish a universal winner.

The differences also affect how you organize your first few sessions. In Definitive Edition, pay attention to who is positioned where, what equipment and gems are active, and how a Chain Attack fits into a dangerous encounter. In Xenoblade Chronicles 2, the equivalent early vocabulary is the Driver–Blade partnership, each Blade’s weapon and power set, and the decision to switch Blades during a fight. Neither set of terms is a prerequisite for the other, but learning both at once can make the series feel less coherent than playing one campaign to a natural stopping point.

What you are getting in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition

Shulk, the Monado and the Mechon

You play as Shulk, whose discovery of the Monado becomes the starting point for the game’s conflict with the Mechon. His companions travel with him, so the story is structured around a party rather than a lone hero. That setup gives the first game a clear introductory frame: learn who Shulk is, understand the threat posed by the Mechon and gradually master the systems attached to the Monado and the wider party.

The premise gives you an obvious narrative question to carry through the opening: what does the Monado allow Shulk to do, and why does it matter against the Mechon? You can let that question drive your progress without needing outside series knowledge. The party format also means that a newcomer can observe how different companions contribute instead of being asked to understand the Driver and Blade relationship immediately.

A positioning-focused real-time battle system

Nintendo describes combat as strategic and real time. Positioning your party members matters, and the game includes a future-seeing element that can inform how you respond to danger. Equipment and weapon-skill upgrades, gems and Chain Attacks add additional layers to character preparation and coordinated attacks.

Those terms are useful when choosing an entry point. If you prefer learning one party’s equipment, positioning and attack routines before moving to a system built around multiple Blade partners, this is the more natural first lesson in the series. That is a learning preference, not evidence that the game is mechanically easier for every player.

A sensible first-game checklist is to read the battle prompts instead of rushing past them, experiment with party positioning in ordinary encounters, and treat equipment and gems as part of preparation rather than emergency fixes. When the future-seeing element appears, use it as information for choosing a response, not as a reason to memorize every battle in advance. Chain Attacks are another system worth practicing before a major fight so that the command feels familiar when you need coordinated damage.

What you are getting in Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Rex, Pyra and the Titans of Alrest

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 centers on Rex and Pyra. Their journey takes place in Alrest, where civilization exists on the backs of colossal Titans and the characters seek Elysium. The setting and cast are therefore substantially different from Shulk’s Mechon-focused story.

The Titan setting is more than a name to recognize when deciding where to start. It supplies the game’s basic sense of place: communities and travel are organized around enormous living landforms rather than the first game’s central conflict with the Mechon. If the image of a world built on Titans and a journey toward Elysium is what made you notice the series, beginning here is reasonable even though it reverses release order.

Drivers, Blades and switching during combat

Its battle vocabulary is also distinct. Drivers partner with Blades, borrow their weapons and powers, and can switch between Blades in battle. Rather than treating the second game as a continuation of the first game’s party tutorial, approach it as a new ruleset that asks you to understand Driver–Blade partnerships and when to change active Blades.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switching is a decision to practice deliberately. Notice which Blade is active, what weapon and power it supplies, and whether changing partners gives you a better response to the current encounter. This is a different mental model from simply moving a fixed party into position, so expect a short adjustment period even if you have already played another real-time role-playing game.

Someone who already owns the second game can begin there without waiting to finish the first. The official descriptions do not establish a prerequisite. If you are buying both and want a conventional introduction to the franchise, however, release order keeps the sequence simple: complete Definitive Edition, then move to Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Why release order is the safest default

It gives each game a clean first impression

Playing in release order avoids asking a newcomer to switch backward between different combat terminology and separate casts before either game has had room to establish itself. You learn the series through Shulk’s party and then encounter Rex, Pyra, Drivers and Blades as a fresh framework.

Release order also makes your own reactions easier to interpret. You can decide what you think about the Mechon conflict, Monado abilities and party positioning before comparing them with Alrest, Elysium and Blade switching. That is a useful way to compare two substantial role-playing games without turning the first few hours of the second into a test of which mechanics you remembered from the first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It avoids implying a story prerequisite that has not been established

The recommendation should not be phrased as “you must understand the first game before the second.” Nintendo’s product descriptions identify distinct protagonists and settings and do not state that one campaign is required reading for the other. Release order is a practical orientation, not a mandatory narrative sequence.

It leaves Torna as a deliberate later choice

Starting with the two main games in order also makes it easier to decide whether and when to add Torna – The Golden Country, the separate additional story associated with Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Torna has its own chronology and purchase rules, so it should not be confused with the first Xenoblade Chronicles game.

Choose a different starting point only for a specific reason

You already own Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Play the game you have rather than treating ownership as a mistake. Nothing in the official descriptions says you need Definitive Edition first. If you later decide to play the first game, you can approach it as a separate adventure with Shulk, the Monado and the Mechon.

You want the 2017 release first

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 released on Nintendo Switch on December 1, 2017. If following the earlier Switch release is more important to you than beginning with the first game’s premise, start there. Keep in mind that this is a release-date preference, not a claim about which campaign is better.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are most interested in the Monado and the Mechon

Choose Definitive Edition first if that premise is the one that immediately appeals to you. Its official description foregrounds Shulk’s discovery of the Monado, the Mechon conflict and tactical party combat. You do not need to justify that choice by predicting how you will rank the games later.

You are most interested in Titans, Elysium and Blade partnerships

Choose Xenoblade Chronicles 2 first if Rex, Pyra, Alrest and switching between Blade partners are the features that draw you in. You can do so without treating the first game as required background.

You want the shortest purchase decision

If you are standing in a shop or browsing a digital listing, identify the exact game title first. The first game’s current Switch name is Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition; the other main title is Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Do not substitute a Torna listing for the main game, and do not assume a Switch 2 edition label means the same purchase is displayed in every region.

Where Torna fits

Chronological placement

Torna – The Golden Country is set 500 years before the events of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Chronology alone would put it first, but chronological order is not automatically the best first-play order for a new player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The simple, spoiler-conscious route

For most players, finish the main Xenoblade Chronicles 2 campaign before starting Torna. This preserves the main game’s original flow and avoids interrupting its progression with a prequel campaign. It also keeps the decision separate from the question of whether to play Definitive Edition or Xenoblade Chronicles 2 first.

Takahashi’s mid-game alternative

Tetsuya Takahashi, Monolith Soft’s executive producer, offered a different sequence in a 2018 interview. In his words: “Speaking purely from a personal perspective, I’d say if you haven’t played either, you should start with the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 main game, finish up until Chapter 7, then play through Torna – The Golden Country, then finish the rest of the game from Chapter 8.”

He also said: “So it’s possible that players will view the main game a little differently if they play Torna – The Golden Country first.” Treat this as the developer’s personal recommendation for interleaving Torna with Xenoblade Chronicles 2, not as guidance on whether the first Xenoblade Chronicles should precede the second.

The Chapter 7 pause is best for players who are comfortable interrupting the main game and deliberately following an alternative structure. If you want the least complicated route, play the main game through and then Torna.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no need to force Torna into a decision about the two main games. You can play Definitive Edition, play Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and then decide whether the 500-year-earlier story adds something you want to explore. Conversely, owning Torna does not obligate you to start with it simply because its setting is earlier.

Buying Torna without buying duplicate content

Expansion Pass and standalone version

Nintendo describes Torna as an additional story available through the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Expansion Pass or as a standalone retail version. The standalone release contains the same Torna story as the Expansion Pass and includes a download code for Expansion Pass packs 1–4.

What the included code does

The packs supplied with the standalone Torna purchase can be played only in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Torna itself is not a substitute for the main game: a Torna-only standalone purchase does not include Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Do not purchase both for the same Torna story

Nintendo’s support information says there is no reason to buy the standalone Torna product and the Expansion Pass for the same content. Before paying, check whether you already own the Expansion Pass, whether you are buying the standalone story, and whether your copy is for the same Nintendo account and region.

A practical checkout check is to read the product description all the way through: confirm whether it says “additional story,” whether the main game is included, and whether the download code is usable on your account. This prevents the most common mismatch—buying Torna expecting a complete copy of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Switch and Switch 2 edition checks

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition

Nintendo’s official page identifies the Switch release as Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition and also presents a Switch 2 version selection. Catalog names and availability can change, so verify the current listing in your region before purchasing and distinguish a standard Switch listing from a Switch 2 edition listing.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Nintendo Support records compatibility with the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition in update 3.0.0, released July 22, 2026; the Switch 2 Edition became playable on July 30, 2026. These dates describe the support history, not a promise that every region displays identical pricing or upgrade options. Check the current regional product page and your console’s edition information before assuming a particular upgrade is included.

When comparing listings, match three details: the console you intend to use, the edition name shown by Nintendo, and the region tied to your account. A product page can change its availability or presentation, so a saved search result is not a substitute for checking the live listing at purchase time.

Three practical play plans

Plan A: You are new to the series and own neither game

  1. Buy the edition of Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition that matches your console.
  2. Complete that campaign and learn its party-positioning, Monado, equipment, gem and Chain Attack terminology.
  3. Move to Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and treat Drivers, Blades and Blade switching as a new system.
  4. Decide separately whether you want Torna after the main game.

Plan B: You already own Xenoblade Chronicles 2

  1. Start the game you own; the first Xenoblade Chronicles is not established as a prerequisite.
  2. Choose either the spoiler-conscious post-game Torna route or Takahashi’s Chapter 7 interleave.
  3. Play Definitive Edition later if you want Shulk’s story and its different combat vocabulary.

Plan C: You are buying specifically for Torna

  1. Confirm whether you already own Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and its Expansion Pass.
  2. If you want only Torna, verify the standalone version’s contents and remember that it does not include the main game.
  3. If you own the Expansion Pass, do not buy the standalone Torna product again for the same story.
  4. Select a play order: main game first for the simplest experience, or Chapter 1–7, Torna, then Chapter 8 onward if you intentionally want Takahashi’s alternative.

Plan D: You are choosing by combat vocabulary

  1. Pick Definitive Edition if party positioning, future-seeing, gems and Chain Attacks sound like the systems you want to learn first.
  2. Pick Xenoblade Chronicles 2 if Driver–Blade partnerships, borrowed weapons and powers, and switching Blades are the main appeal.
  3. After finishing one game, approach the other’s battle terms as a new ruleset instead of expecting identical controls or priorities.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling the first game a required prequel: the official descriptions do not establish that dependency.
  • Using Torna’s 500-year chronology as the only ordering rule: chronological placement and recommended first-play flow are different questions.
  • Assuming Torna includes the main game: the standalone Torna purchase does not.
  • Buying both Torna products: Nintendo says the standalone story and Expansion Pass do not need to be purchased together for the same content.
  • Conflating editions: check whether a listing is for Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, and verify region-specific availability.
  • Expecting a statistical winner: no comparative sales, review-average, completion-time or player-survey figure establishes one game as universally best.
  • Stopping at chronology: a prequel’s earlier setting does not automatically make it the best entry point.
  • Buying from a vague listing: use the full game title and confirm whether the item is a main game, an Expansion Pass or standalone Torna.

Frequently asked questions

Should I play Xenoblade Chronicles or Xenoblade Chronicles 2 first?

For a newcomer with access to both, play Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition first, then Xenoblade Chronicles 2. That follows release order without claiming that either game is a required story prerequisite.

Can I start with Xenoblade Chronicles 2?

Yes. Nintendo’s descriptions do not state that the first game must be completed first. Start with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 if Rex, Pyra, Alrest, Elysium or Driver–Blade combat is what interests you most, or if it is the game you already own.

Is Torna before or after Xenoblade Chronicles 2?

Torna is set 500 years earlier, but the simplest spoiler-conscious order is the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 main game followed by Torna. Takahashi’s attributed alternative is to stop after Chapter 7, play Torna, then resume at Chapter 8.

Does standalone Torna include Xenoblade Chronicles 2?

No. The standalone Torna purchase contains the additional story and a code for Expansion Pass packs 1–4, but not the main Xenoblade Chronicles 2 game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need both standalone Torna and the Expansion Pass?

No. Nintendo says there is no reason to buy both for the same Torna content. Check which version you already own before purchasing.

What is the main combat difference?

Definitive Edition emphasizes real-time party positioning, future-seeing, equipment and weapon-skill upgrades, gems and Chain Attacks. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 emphasizes Drivers partnering with Blades, using their weapons and powers, and switching between Blades.

When did the Switch versions release?

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 released on December 1, 2017. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition released on May 29, 2020.

Does owning a Switch 2 change the recommended order?

No. The recommendation is based on entry and release order. Check the current regional listing for the correct Switch or Switch 2 edition, and note Nintendo’s support history for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 update 3.0.0 on July 22, 2026 and Switch 2 Edition availability on July 30, 2026.

Final decision

For a newcomer with access to both games, use Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition as the starting point and follow it with Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Pick Xenoblade Chronicles 2 first only when its Rex-and-Pyra premise, Titan setting or Driver–Blade combat is the specific reason you want to begin there, or when it is the game you already own. Handle Torna as an optional, separately purchased story: after the main game for the simplest route, or between Chapters 7 and 8 if you deliberately want Takahashi’s attributed alternative.

The Bottom Line

Best default: play Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition first, then Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Start with the second game only for its specific premise or because you already own it. Play Torna – The Golden Country after the main game unless you intentionally want Takahashi’s Chapter 7-to-Torna-to-Chapter 8 sequence.
