Xcode 27.2 Beta 2 adds support for storing project configuration as JSON in an .xcproj file instead of the traditional .pbxproj property list. To switch an existing project, select the project in Xcode’s Project navigator, open the File inspector, and choose JSON from the Project Format menu under Project Document. Apple says the hierarchical format is easier to read, review in source control, and edit with coding agents; it has not published measured results showing how much it reduces merge conflicts or editing effort.
What the new Xcode project format changes
An Xcode project bundle traditionally stores its configuration in a .pbxproj property list. With the new option, Xcode stores that configuration as a hierarchical JSON file with the .xcproj extension inside the .xcodeproj bundle. The change concerns the project’s configuration format, not the source code files themselves.
Apple announced the option in the Xcode 27.2 Beta 2 release notes, describing .xcproj as “more readable, merge-friendly, and easier for coding agents to edit.” Apple’s migration guide says Xcode 27 and later support both formats, allowing teams to choose between them. - Select the project. In Xcode’s Project navigator, select the project at the top of the project hierarchy.
- Open the File inspector. Find the Project Document section.
- Change the format. In the Project Format menu, choose JSON.
- Review the source-control changes. Apple says the conversion removes the
.pbxprojfile and adds an.xcprojfile inside the.xcodeprojfolder. Review both changes in your normal version-control workflow before sharing them with the team.

Compatibility and team considerations
Apple’s migration guide documents both project formats as supported in Xcode 27 and later. The Xcode 27.2 Beta 2 release notes add that projects using .xcproj also open in earlier Xcode 27 versions. The documentation reviewed here does not establish compatibility with older major releases such as Xcode 26, so confirm every collaborator’s Xcode version before changing a shared project.
For Xcode 27.2 Beta 2 specifically, Apple lists a requirement for a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later. That requirement applies to this beta build; check the release notes for the particular Xcode version you plan to run rather than assuming it applies to other releases.

How to undo the format change
Apple says to use source control to discard the individual file changes in the .xcodeproj folder: the removal of the .pbxproj file and the addition of the .xcproj file. Review the affected paths before reverting so you do not discard unrelated project changes.

Does JSON actually reduce merge conflicts?
Apple says conflicts are less likely because the JSON format isolates configuration changes, and that changes are easier to verify in source-control comparison views. The available Apple documentation supplies no conflict-rate figures or comparative tests, so treat this as Apple’s stated design rationale rather than a guaranteed result. Teams should still review project-file diffs and coordinate concurrent changes.
