Bethesda has confirmed that Fallout 5 is in preproduction and that The Elder Scrolls VI is its primary development focus. Both games are being built on Creation Engine 3, but no official source reviewed for this update names their launch platforms. That means Xbox-console exclusivity—and a PlayStation release—remain unconfirmed.

What Bethesda actually confirmed

Fallout 5 is in preproduction

Bethesda Game Studios described Fallout 5 as a long-range destination in its July 17, 2026 note, while explaining that several Fallout projects are active. The clearest status statement is direct: “Fallout 5 is currently in preproduction.” Preproduction generally covers planning, technology decisions, early design and production setup; it does not indicate that the game is close to launch.

The same note cited more than 65 million copies sold for Skyrim, illustrating the scale of Bethesda’s role-playing franchises, but it did not attach a release window to Fallout 5.

The Elder Scrolls VI has most of the team

Bethesda said The Elder Scrolls VI is “our primary development focus today, with the majority of our team currently working on the next chapter of the franchise.” That places it ahead of Fallout 5 in active development priority. It still does not establish a launch date, reveal a platform list or indicate that development is near completion.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Both projects use Creation Engine 3

Bethesda says it has been building Creation Engine 3 since Starfield’s launch and is using that shared technology for both games. The engine statement confirms a technical foundation, not a release schedule or business decision about consoles.

Did Xbox confirm that either game is exclusive?

No. The Bethesda note does not name Xbox Series consoles, Xbox’s next-generation hardware, PC, PlayStation 5 or any other platform for Fallout 5 or The Elder Scrolls VI. Without a title-specific platform announcement, claims that either game is definitively an Xbox-console exclusive go beyond what Bethesda has confirmed.

Why the wider Xbox policy causes confusion

The February 2024 four-game announcement

On February 15, 2024, Xbox announced that four games that had been on Xbox for at least a year would come to other platforms. Xbox Wire said there was “no fundamental change to our approach on exclusivity.” In the accompanying official podcast transcript, Microsoft Gaming leadership explicitly said the four games were not Starfield or Indiana Jones.

That move is relevant context, but it is not a Fallout 5 or Elder Scrolls VI platform announcement. It concerned already-released titles and did not publish a rule that all future Bethesda games would or would not launch on competing consoles.

Xbox has also described a case-by-case approach

Microsoft’s ZeniMax acquisition materials stated that Xbox, PC, xCloud and Game Pass would receive ZeniMax’s games, while distribution on other platforms would be decided case by case. That 2020 commitment helps explain why Xbox and PC are the safest destinations to expect, but it does not settle the external-console status of either upcoming game.

What this means for PS5 and other platforms

  • Xbox and PC: Microsoft’s broader ZeniMax policy identifies these as committed destinations, along with cloud play and Game Pass, but no game-specific launch list has been published for these two titles.
  • PS5: There is no official confirmation that The Elder Scrolls VI or Fallout 5 will launch on PS5. There is also no official statement ruling out a PS5 version.
  • Other consoles: The reviewed announcements provide no title-specific information.
  • Cloud and subscriptions: The ZeniMax materials mention xCloud and Game Pass as part of Xbox’s commitment; availability, timing and edition details for these games remain unannounced.

Release dates and development timing

No reviewed official source gives a release date or launch window for either game. Fallout 5’s preproduction status indicates a very long development path may remain, while The Elder Scrolls VI’s primary-focus status shows where Bethesda’s resources are concentrated without supplying a completion estimate. Any year attached to either game without a new Bethesda or Xbox announcement should be treated as speculation.

How to separate confirmation from speculation

A reliable update should contain a platform list, release timing or a direct statement from Bethesda or Xbox about the specific game. The current official information contains none of those details. Reports, insider claims and fan theories may change as development progresses, but they should not be presented as confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical takeaway is straightforward: The Elder Scrolls VI is farther along in Bethesda’s priority list, Fallout 5 is in preproduction, and both are built on Creation Engine 3. Xbox has not officially announced either title as an Xbox-console exclusive, nor has it confirmed a PS5 release.
