ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally X20 is now available as a $1,299 Windows 11 handheld gaming PC, and its headline upgrade is a much larger 7.4-inch OLED display. Shuhei Yoshida, the former President of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, called it his “new favorite portable gaming PC” and specifically praised the screen. The X20 is a substantial design refresh, but not a major performance-generation leap over the existing ROG Xbox Ally X.

Why Shuhei Yoshida is praising the Xbox Ally X20

Yoshida posted on October 16, 2026: “My new favorite portable gaming PC, ROG Xbox Ally X20! A larger, beautiful OLED display is a big upgrade @ASUS_ROG.” His comments are notable because he previously led Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Worldwide Studios, the organization responsible for PlayStation’s first-party game development. The endorsement is personal rather than an official PlayStation assessment, but it highlights the X20’s clearest change: the display.

ASUS announced availability on October 15, 2026, making the X20 a shipping product rather than a rumor or prototype. It is a 20th-anniversary edition in the ROG Xbox Ally family and runs the full Windows PC game ecosystem while using Xbox-oriented controls and software integration.

What is new on the ROG Xbox Ally X20?

A larger OLED screen

The X20 has a 7.4-inch full-HD OLED panel with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, HDR support and variable refresh rate (VRR). ASUS lists VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification and a 0.2-millisecond response time. Compared with the LCD panel in the Ally X, OLED should provide deeper blacks and stronger contrast, while VRR can reduce visible tearing when frame rates fluctuate.

Refined controls and grip

ASUS adds TMR (tunnel magnetoresistance) joysticks, rubberized grips, revised bumpers and triggers, and customizable Xbox-oriented controls. These changes target the parts of a handheld that affect every game session: stick precision, trigger feel and comfort during extended play.

Redesigned cooling

ASUS says the new fans improve airflow by 20% and increase heatsink fin area by 11%. Those percentages are manufacturer claims. The redesign is intended to manage heat and acoustics, but available reviews do not establish a single battery-life or noise result that applies to every game and power setting.

ROG Xbox Ally X20 versus ROG Xbox Ally X

Feature ROG Xbox Ally X20 ROG Xbox Ally X

Performance: an upgrade in experience, not a clear speed generation

PC Gamer described the X20’s core power as identical to the prior Xbox Ally X while identifying OLED, control refinements and the new cooling system as the major additions. Tom’s Guide likewise found the OLED and ergonomic changes impressive but said the value proposition weakens at $1,299 because performance did not rise proportionally.

Individual game benchmarks can vary with resolution, graphics settings, frame-rate caps and power mode. Published game-specific results should not be treated as a universal performance figure for every title. Buyers seeking a large frame-rate increase over the Ally X should not assume the X20 delivers one.

Who should buy the X20?

It makes sense for display-first buyers

  • You want a larger OLED screen for richer contrast and HDR gaming.
  • You value a 120Hz panel with VRR for smoother handheld play.
  • You are buying your first high-end Xbox-branded Windows handheld and prefer the newest controls and cooling design.

The Ally X remains the value choice for existing owners

  • You already own an Ally X and are satisfied with its LCD display.
  • Your priority is frame rate rather than screen quality or ergonomics.
  • You would rather avoid paying $300 more for broadly unchanged core performance.

Bottom line on the $1,299 price

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 is a real, currently available handheld whose best feature is easy to identify: its 7.4-inch OLED HDR display with 120Hz VRR. Yoshida’s praise reflects that visible upgrade, and the revised controls and cooling add meaningful design improvements. At $1,299, however, it is not a straightforward performance upgrade from the $999 Ally X. The OLED experience can justify the premium for new buyers and display enthusiasts; Ally X owners should upgrade only if the screen and handling changes matter more to them than a proportional increase in speed.
