The best Xbox Series X|S setup is not one universal preset. First check what your TV, monitor, HDMI port, receiver, soundbar, cable and games actually support. Then choose resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR, audio and accessibility options around that equipment and your own needs.

Start with Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details. This capability report tells you which display features the complete connection can use. It is a compatibility check, not a benchmark, and the labels can change with console updates or language settings.

What settings should I change on my Xbox Series X?

Use this order: verify the display path, select a supported resolution, enable an appropriate refresh rate, then test VRR, ALLM and HDR in the games you play. A setting that appears in the Xbox menu is not proof that every game renders at that mode.

1. Read the 4K TV details report first

  1. Open Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details.
  2. Note whether the report lists the resolution, 120 Hz, HDR, VRR and other capabilities you want.
  3. If a feature is missing, check the television or monitor specification, the HDMI input selected on the display, and every device between the Xbox and screen.
  4. For troubleshooting, connect the console directly to the display. An AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch or capture device can limit the reported mode.
  5. On Series X, use the supplied Ultra High Speed HDMI cable when testing a high-bandwidth display mode.

Some displays offer 120 Hz only at a lower resolution or through particular HDMI inputs. Use the capability report and the display manual together rather than assuming that every port has identical bandwidth.

2. Choose resolution and refresh rate as a pair

Set Resolution to a value your display reports as supported. Set Refresh rate to 120 Hz only when the console offers it at the resolution you want and the display is rated for that combination. If the 120 Hz option disappears, try the display’s correct HDMI port, disable an intervening device, or test another resolution.

A 120 Hz output setting describes the signal the console can send. It does not force every title to render at 120 frames per second. Games may target 30, 60 or 120 frames per second, and some provide a performance or quality selector inside their own video menu.

How do I enable 120Hz on Xbox Series S?

  1. Connect Series S directly to a display that supports 120 Hz at a supported resolution.
  2. Open Settings > General > TV & display options.
  3. Choose a resolution that the display can run at 120 Hz; if necessary, test 1080p or another lower mode shown by the display’s specifications.
  4. Set Refresh rate to 120 Hz.
  5. Reopen 4K TV details to confirm the console still reports the desired combination.

Series S, the display’s HDMI port and the cable all matter. A television marketed as 120 Hz may reserve that rate for one input or one resolution. If the console falls back to 60 Hz, restore the display’s gaming or enhanced-HDMI option if its manufacturer requires one, then repeat the capability check.

Should I turn VRR and ALLM on for Xbox?

Enable Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) when both the console and display report support and you prefer a smoother response when a game’s frame rate fluctuates. Enable Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) when your display supports it and you want the television to switch automatically to its low-latency or game mode.

Model, port and resolution support vary. VRR is not a guarantee that every stutter disappears, and ALLM does not guarantee the lowest possible latency in every television configuration. After enabling either option, compare a familiar game with the setting on and off. Look for stable motion, correct HDR behavior and a picture mode you can live with.

  • Programmable and Practical – Two programmable buttons with fast mapping, replaceable lock caps, independent control panel, and built-in 3.5mm audio jack and volume control.

If VRR is unavailable, verify the selected HDMI input, the display firmware and the resolution/refresh-rate combination shown in 4K TV details. A receiver or switch that cannot pass VRR can hide the feature even when the television itself supports it.

How should I configure HDR?

Xbox supports HDR10 on compatible displays and can use Auto HDR for some backward-compatible content. HDR is a picture and content-path feature, not a universal performance boost. The TV must support HDR on the selected input, and the game or video must provide HDR content for you to see its effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm HDR support in 4K TV details.
  2. Turn on the display’s required enhanced, wide-color or HDR input mode, using the display’s own instructions.
  3. Run the Xbox HDR calibration tool when it is offered under the TV and display settings.
  4. Check the individual game’s video options; some titles expose their own brightness or HDR calibration.

Use the calibration result as a starting point, then adjust for your room and viewing preference. If HDR looks washed out, check whether the display is receiving HDR on that input and whether a receiver, switch or capture device is converting the signal.

Can Xbox settings force a game’s performance mode?

No. Console display settings control the output signal; they cannot add a game’s missing performance mode or increase its internal frame-rate target. When a title offers Quality, Resolution or Performance choices, read that game’s description and decide whether you prefer sharper effects or a higher frame-rate target. The meaning of those labels is title-specific, so do not assume one setting has the same result across the Xbox library.

How do I fix a missing 4K, 120Hz, VRR or HDR option?

  • Check the port: move the cable to the display input specified for 4K, 120 Hz, VRR or HDR.
  • Remove intermediaries: connect the Xbox directly to the TV or monitor while diagnosing the problem.
  • Check the cable: use the supplied Ultra High Speed cable with Series X for high-bandwidth testing; replace a damaged or uncertified cable.
  • Test another combination: try a lower resolution at 120 Hz if the display supports that but not 4K at 120 Hz.
  • Read the report again: return to 4K TV details after each change, because the console reports the capability of the current connection rather than the display’s maximum advertised specification.

What Xbox audio settings should I use?

Choose audio according to the equipment actually connected. Xbox lists Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X as spatial-audio choices, but the available selection depends on the HDMI receiver/display path or the headset. None is mandatory or automatically better for every listener.

For a TV, receiver or soundbar

  1. Open Settings > General > Volume & audio output.
  2. Review the audio testing/details screen to see what the connected HDMI setup reports as supported.
  3. For a compatible home-theater chain, select HDMI audio: Bitstream out, then choose the supported home-theater format shown by your equipment.
  4. Play a known title and verify that the receiver or soundbar displays the expected format.

For headphones

Under the same audio settings, select the headset output and choose the spatial format your headset and Xbox report as supported. If voices or effects sound wrong, reset the audio testing/details information, reconnect the headset and test again before changing several formats at once.

Spatial processing cannot compensate for a poor physical fit, an incorrect chat mixer balance or hearing needs that call for clearer dialogue. Treat the format list as a capability guide, then use the option that is intelligible and comfortable in your games and chat.

How do I make Xbox easier to see or hear?

Xbox provides console-wide accessibility tools, but each helps a different task. Apply one change at a time and test it in the menu or activity where you need assistance.

Narrator: read interface text aloud

Narrator is the Xbox screen reader. It reads interface elements such as text and buttons aloud, making console navigation possible without relying on sight. Configure its voice and behavior in the accessibility settings, then test focus movement through Settings and the guide.

Magnifier: enlarge the whole screen

Magnifier zooms the console screen so text and images are easier to see. It is useful for menus and system interfaces; it does not add detail that a game never renders. Use it when a temporary enlargement is more practical than changing every game’s subtitle or HUD size.

High contrast and color filters

High contrast makes items and text easier to distinguish while navigating Xbox’s built-in apps and experiences. Color filters alter the appearance of colors to help distinguish them. Xbox states that color filters do not affect performance and apply across games, movies, apps and menus, unlike a filter implemented only inside one game.

Choose a filter based on the colors you personally confuse, and check a game’s maps, item icons and subtitles afterward. A filter that clarifies one interface can make another less comfortable.

Night mode

Night mode lets you customize the blue-light filter and related console, controller and screen behavior. Use its schedule and intensity controls if bright output is distracting in the evening, while remembering that your television may have a separate brightness or color-temperature control.

Captions and chat transcription

Closed captions are available for supported discs and many on-demand services, but they do not automatically caption every game. Look for a title’s own subtitle or caption option when dialogue is not appearing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xbox also offers speech-to-text for Party Chat or in-game chat and text-to-speech that can speak text typed to other players. Availability depends on the chat context and the participants’ setup, so test it in the specific party or game where you plan to use it.

Controller, mouse and keyboard options

Xbox Controller Assist can combine two controllers so they operate as one. This can let a second person provide input without taking control away from the primary player. Xbox Accessories also supports button-layout customization for listed Xbox controllers and some third-party controllers; the exact remapping options depend on the device.

Wired USB mice and keyboards can work for console navigation in supported situations and in selected games and apps. They are not universal replacements for a controller. Check the individual game’s input support before buying a device or rebuilding your control scheme.

Which accessibility features must a game provide?

System settings cannot add subtitles, audio cues, remapping, difficulty choices, motion controls or reduced-motion options that a game does not implement. Use the accessibility tags in the Xbox Store to look for supported features before installing or purchasing a title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guidelines address text display, contrast, captions, audio, input, difficulty, haptics, motion, photosensitivity and chat. They are developer best practices, not a promise that every game includes every feature. For a specific need, read the game’s feature list and, when possible, check its in-game accessibility menu before starting a long campaign.

Should I buy a new display or adaptive hardware?

Check the existing equipment first. If 4K TV details shows that your current display already supports the resolution, 120 Hz, VRR or HDR combination you want, an upgrade may add little. A 120 Hz TV or monitor is most relevant when the display is the bottleneck and you specifically want higher-refresh-rate options; support can still depend on resolution and HDMI port.

For input barriers, an Xbox Adaptive Controller can connect compatible external switches, mounts or joysticks. Xbox also presents an Adaptive Joystick as a controller companion. These are optional, needs-led tools, not requirements for using Xbox accessibility features. Confirm physical fit, connector compatibility and the particular game’s input support before purchasing.

Xbox Series X|S setup checklist

  • Run Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details.
  • Confirm the display input, cable and any receiver or switch support the mode you want.
  • Set resolution and refresh rate to a combination the report marks as supported.
  • Enable VRR and ALLM only when available, then compare the result in your games.
  • Calibrate HDR on both the console and any game that provides its own calibration.
  • Match HDMI or headset audio to the formats reported by the audio testing/details screen.
  • Turn on only the accessibility tools that solve a real visual, hearing, motor, communication or motion barrier.
  • Check each game’s own accessibility menu and Xbox Store tags for features system settings cannot supply.
