Xbox Series X and Series S play most Xbox One games, plus selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Backward compatibility is free for eligible games you already own. Digital games can be installed from your library; supported physical discs require a Series X model with an optical drive, and the disc must stay inserted while you play. Series S is digital-only.
Eligibility is decided game by game. Xbox’s live backward-compatible catalog is the authority for a particular Xbox 360 or original Xbox title, while Xbox One support is broad but not universal. Enhancements such as faster loading, higher resolution, Auto HDR and FPS Boost also vary by game.

“Xbox Series X|S Backward Compatibility is free and allows you to play select Xbox 360, Original Xbox games, and Xbox One games you already own on Xbox Series X|S,” according to Xbox’s Backward Compatible Games FAQ. “Free” means there is no separate backward-compatibility fee for an eligible game you own; it does not turn an unsupported title into a playable one.

Which Xbox One games can you play?
Xbox says most Xbox One games can be played on Series X|S. Xbox Series X is described as compatible with thousands of games across Xbox generations, but Xbox does not present that wording as a guarantee for every release. A particular game can have title-specific functionality, licensing or feature limitations.

For a digital Xbox One purchase, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game and open My games & apps, then the library or Ready to Install. If the title is eligible and owned on that account, it can be downloaded without buying it again. Cloud saves and achievements generally follow the account, although the exact behavior of an individual title can differ.
For a disc-based Xbox One game, use a Series X with a working optical drive. Inserting a supported disc prompts the console to download the compatible game files. The disc is still required every time you launch the game, because it verifies ownership. Installing the files does not convert a disc license into a digital license.
Can you play Xbox 360 games on Xbox Series X|S?
Yes, but only selected Xbox 360 games are backward compatible. The entire Xbox 360 library is not included. Digital purchases appear in the owner’s library when they are supported, and supported discs can be used on a disc-equipped Series X.
Xbox’s catalog has a generation filter for Xbox 360 and feature filters for capabilities such as HDR and FPS Boost. Use those filters rather than assuming that a game’s original Xbox 360 release will run. Catalog membership can change, so check the live listing for the exact edition or region where relevant.
Xbox 360 digital ownership
Sign in to the account that bought the game and check the console library. An eligible title should offer an install option. If it does not appear, verify that you are using the purchasing account, that the transaction completed, and that the game is listed in the current catalog. Delisted games can have complicated ownership and licensing situations; the catalog and your account’s purchase history are more reliable than a third-party list.
Xbox 360 discs
Insert the original disc into a Series X with an optical drive. The console downloads the playable version from Xbox’s servers, so an internet connection and sufficient storage are needed for installation. Keep the original disc in the drive whenever you play. Series S cannot use the disc, even if the same title has a digital backward-compatible release.
Can you play original Xbox games?
Selected original Xbox games are supported, but compatibility is not universal. Check the original Xbox section of Xbox’s current catalog for the exact title. Both digital ownership and supported discs can work on Series X; Series S can use only digital licenses.

Original Xbox compatibility has additional limits that do not necessarily apply to newer generations:
- Xbox Live online multiplayer services from the original console are unavailable through the backward-compatible version.
- In-game marketplaces that existed on the original Xbox are unavailable.
- Original Xbox games do not receive Xbox achievements.
- Offline multiplayer and system link can remain available when the original game itself supported those modes.
These restrictions concern legacy services, not the ability to launch every supported game. A title can be playable offline while losing online functions that depended on the original Xbox infrastructure.
How to check whether a specific game is compatible
- Open Xbox’s backward-compatible games catalog. Filter by Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox. For visual or performance features, use the catalog’s HDR and FPS Boost filters where available.
- Check the exact title. Confirm the game name and, when listed, the edition. Do not infer support from a similarly named sequel, regional version or compilation.
- Check the license you own. Digital games must be attached to the signed-in account. Physical games require a Series X with an optical drive and a disc that matches a supported release.
- Separate compatibility from enhancements. A title can be playable without HDR, FPS Boost or another enhancement. The catalog identifies those features individually.
- Install from the correct place. Digital owners use the library or Ready to Install; disc owners insert the disc and allow the console to download the game files.
Xbox’s official support page includes a “See excluded games” link, but an exclusion list is not a substitute for the live catalog. For a purchase decision, check the title directly because catalog membership and licensing can change.
What improvements do backward-compatible games receive?
Backward compatibility is not the same as a full remaster. Depending on the title, Series X|S can provide faster loading, improved resolution up to 4K for selected games, steadier frame rates, Auto HDR or FPS Boost. A compatible game may receive one enhancement, several, or none.
Xbox reports that compatible Series X|S titles underwent more than 500,000 hours of testing, according to the Xbox catalog accessed October 13, 2026. That is Xbox’s stated testing figure, not an independent guarantee covering every television, display mode, save file or gameplay condition.
Enhancements are title-specific. Check the catalog entry and the in-game or console indicators instead of assuming that every Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox game runs at 4K or 60 frames per second. Resolution and frame-rate behavior can also depend on the console model and display settings.
How physical discs work on Series X
A disc-compatible game is not copied into a permanent digital entitlement. The console uses the disc to verify ownership, while the playable files may be downloaded rather than read entirely from the original media.

- Use the right hardware: choose a Series X configuration with an optical drive. Xbox also sells an all-digital Series X edition, so confirm the specific hardware before relying on discs.
- Insert a supported disc: the console checks the title against the backward-compatible catalog.
- Allow the download: the compatible files are installed to internal storage or an available external drive.
- Leave the disc inserted: removing it removes the license check and prevents launching the game.
Scratched or region-incompatible media can fail even when a title is listed. Try another supported disc, clean the original carefully and verify that the console recognizes other discs before concluding that the game itself is unsupported.
Does Xbox Series S play discs?
No. Every Series S model is digital-only and has no optical drive. It can run eligible digital Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, but it cannot read an Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc. If your library is primarily physical, a Series X with an optical drive is the relevant choice.
Backward compatibility versus Smart Delivery
Smart Delivery is a separate system. Xbox Wire described it on June 15, 2020 as providing the best available version of a supported game for the Xbox console being used, without an additional purchase when that supported version becomes available.
Smart Delivery applies only when the developer or publisher implements it. It is not a promise that every Xbox One game receives a native Series X|S version, and it does not expand the Xbox 360 or original Xbox backward-compatible catalog. A physical disc can participate in Smart Delivery when its developer or publisher chooses to support that arrangement, but the disc requirement still depends on the hardware and the license.
Think of the systems this way: backward compatibility determines whether an older game can run at all; Smart Delivery determines whether an implemented title supplies the best available version for the console you are using.

Storage requirements and external drives
Compatibility does not require a special storage accessory. Xbox Series X|S can use a compatible USB 3.1 hard-disk drive or solid-state drive, and compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games can be played directly from external storage.
Xbox’s September 24, 2020 storage primer describes the dedicated Storage Expansion Card as matching the internal SSD’s performance. External USB storage is useful for holding a large library, while the expansion card is designed for internal-SSD-level performance. Neither accessory unlocks an unsupported title or removes the Series S disc limitation.

When installing a disc game, plan for the downloaded file size rather than the capacity of the original disc. Keep enough free space for the game and updates, and use the console’s storage-management screen to move older titles when necessary.
Common problems and practical fixes
The game is not in Ready to Install
Confirm that you are signed in with the purchasing account, check the account’s order history and search the live catalog for the exact title. If it is an Xbox 360 or original Xbox game, absence from the catalog usually means it is not currently supported. Do not purchase a second copy solely because the library display is delayed; first restart the console and refresh the library.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The disc installs but will not launch
Make sure the disc remains inserted, the disc surface is readable and the title is listed as supported. A Series S cannot validate any physical disc. On an all-digital Series X, the same limitation applies.
The game runs but lacks HDR or FPS Boost
Compatibility and enhancements are separate. Recheck the catalog entry for that title and feature. If the feature is not listed, the absence is expected rather than an installation fault.
Online play does not work in an original Xbox game
Original Xbox Xbox Live services and in-game marketplaces are not available through backward compatibility. Use offline multiplayer or system link only when the original game supports those modes. Newer-generation online behavior is title-specific and may depend on the game’s own servers.
Choosing between Series X and Series S for an older library
| Prioritize this | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox collection | Series X with an optical drive | Supported discs can install and remain the play license. |
| Digital library only | Series X or Series S | Both can access eligible digital backward-compatible games; check each title. |
| Highest-end loading and display capability | Series X | Series X hardware offers the higher-performance console option, while enhancements still depend on the game. |
| Small, digital-only setup | Series S | It supports eligible digital games but cannot read discs. |
Do not assume that buying the more powerful console makes every older title compatible. The decisive checks remain the catalog listing, the license format and the specific features shown for that game.
What the compatibility promise really means
Xbox Series X|S is a practical bridge to older libraries, not a universal emulator for every Xbox release. Most Xbox One games are supported, while Xbox 360 and original Xbox support is selective. Digital owners install eligible games from their library; disc owners need a disc-equipped Series X and must keep the disc inserted. Performance and display improvements are optional, title-specific features, and original Xbox online services and achievements remain unavailable.
