PlayStation 5 has the stronger case for a lineup of distinctive, console-linked exclusive franchises. Sony’s official catalog puts recognizable series such as God of War, Gran Turismo, Ghost, Spider-Man, The Last of Us, ASTRO BOT, Ratchet & Clank and Returnal at the center of its platform identity. Xbox has an equally substantial family of owned franchises, including Halo, Gears of War, Forza, Fable, DOOM, Senua, State of Decay and Minecraft, but Microsoft’s recent announcements put several Xbox-associated releases on PlayStation 5 as well as Xbox and PC.
That makes the answer depend on what you mean by “stronger.” If you mean a recognizable set of series that helps distinguish one console from its direct rival, PS5 currently has the clearer advantage. If you mean the breadth of a publisher’s total game portfolio, Xbox remains highly competitive, especially when Xbox consoles, Windows PC, Steam and other supported devices are treated as one ecosystem. This is a comparison of franchise identity and console availability, not an objective ranking of game quality, sales or cultural impact.
The short verdict: PS5 is the clearer exclusive-franchise destination
As of the official announcements available through October 13, 2026, PlayStation 5 offers the more coherent answer to the question “Which console has exclusive franchises I cannot get on the other console?” Sony’s PlayStation Studios catalog presents a concentrated group of series that are strongly associated with PlayStation hardware. The list spans racing, action-adventure, platforming, superhero games and science fiction, giving PS5 a distinctive identity even though individual titles can have different release arrangements.

Microsoft controls major families across shooters, racing, role-playing games, survival, fantasy, action and block-building games. The difference is strategic: Xbox announcements increasingly describe those games as part of a wider Xbox ecosystem rather than as permanent Xbox-console exclusives. Recent announcements explicitly include PlayStation 5 versions of Fable, Gears of War: Reloaded, Ninja Gaiden 4, The Outer Worlds 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and other Xbox-associated releases.

Therefore, PS5 wins on the narrow test of distinctive console-linked franchise identity. Xbox can still be the better choice for a player whose favorite series are Halo, Forza, Gears, DOOM or Fable, particularly if that player also uses PC or values day-one access across Xbox devices.
What “exclusive franchise” actually means
Comparisons become misleading when ownership and exclusivity are treated as synonyms. Use these definitions when judging a series:
- First-party franchise: a series owned or published within a platform holder’s corporate organization. Ownership says who controls the property; it does not by itself say which consoles can run each game.
- Console exclusive: a specific game is available on one console family but not the rival console. A PC release does not make a game exclusive to that console manufacturer’s hardware.
- Timed exclusive: a game launches on one console first and reaches another platform later. The status can change, so the announcement date and stated release window matter.
- Cross-platform release: the same entry is announced for both Xbox and PlayStation consoles, sometimes alongside PC, Steam or older-generation hardware.
- Ecosystem advantage: a title may be unavailable on PS5 while being offered on Xbox Series X|S and PC. That gives Xbox a platform-family advantage, but it is not the same as a permanent Xbox-hardware exclusive.
Xbox’s current announcements make these distinctions especially important. A series can remain an Xbox-owned property while a particular game also ships on PS5. Conversely, an announcement that lists Xbox and PC but does not list PS5 establishes the platforms named for that release; it does not prove that every future entry will remain exclusive to Xbox hardware.

The same caution applies to PlayStation. A game appearing in Sony’s PlayStation Studios catalog establishes a strong association with PlayStation, but the catalog alone is not a blanket promise that every entry in a franchise will be permanently unavailable on other consoles. Evaluate the platform status of each title, on its announced date.
Side-by-side snapshot
| Comparison point | PlayStation 5 | Xbox Series X |
|---|---|---|
| Recognizable franchise identity | Highly concentrated around PlayStation Studios families such as God of War, Gran Turismo, Ghost, Spider-Man, The Last of Us, ASTRO BOT, Ratchet & Clank and Returnal. | Broad portfolio including Halo, Gears of War, Forza, Fable, DOOM, Senua/Hellblade, State of Decay and Minecraft-related games. |
| Console-exclusivity pattern | Several flagship games are presented as PS5-linked, but each title’s exact platforms still require checking. | Many important series are increasingly released through Xbox, PC and, for selected entries, PlayStation 5. |
| Genre spread | Racing, action-adventure, superhero action, platforming, science fiction and narrative games. | First-person shooters, racing, role-playing, fantasy, horror, survival, action and multiplayer. |
| Best interpretation | Stronger if your priority is a console with a distinctive set of series unavailable on the rival console. | Stronger if you value a large publisher portfolio and access across Xbox consoles and PC, even when a title is not hardware-exclusive. |
No official source used for this comparison publishes a directly comparable score or count proving that one company has “more” exclusive franchises. Counting remasters, annual entries or individual editions would also confuse franchise breadth with the number of games. The defensible conclusion comes from the identity of the named families and the platform status of their specific releases.
Why PlayStation’s franchise identity is more distinctive
God of War and Santa Monica Studio
Sony’s studio catalog identifies Santa Monica Studio with the long-running God of War franchise. The series gives PlayStation a recognizable action-adventure pillar with a strong connection to the brand. The catalog’s inclusion of God of War Ragnarök shows that the family remains part of the current PlayStation Studios presentation. The evidence supports a clear PlayStation association; it does not establish permanent console exclusivity for every past or future entry.
Gran Turismo and Polyphony Digital
Polyphony Digital is described as the studio behind Gran Turismo, a franchise that supplies PlayStation with a dedicated driving identity. Sony’s catalog lists Gran Turismo 7. Racing is a meaningful differentiator because it serves a different audience from the cinematic action games that dominate many platform discussions. On the franchise-identity test, Gran Turismo gives PS5 a clearly branded series rather than merely another licensed racing title.

Sucker Punch’s work on Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yōtei gives PlayStation a newer historical-action franchise family. Sony’s official product page identifies Ghost of Yōtei as a PS5 exclusive and offers a standard Blu-ray edition. That is a concrete example of a platform-linked release and a physical product, but it should not be inflated into a claim that every Ghost game will always be exclusive to PlayStation.

Spider-Man and The Last of Us
The PlayStation Studios catalog lists Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and The Last of Us Part II. These are recognizable, high-profile families that reinforce PlayStation’s identity in superhero action and narrative-driven action. Their presence matters to a lineup comparison because they are franchise names a buyer can immediately associate with PlayStation, even though the platform status of individual entries can vary by release and date.
ASTRO BOT, Ratchet & Clank and Returnal
PlayStation’s catalog also lists ASTRO BOT, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Returnal. Together they broaden the portfolio beyond realistic action games: ASTRO BOT represents platforming, Ratchet & Clank combines family-friendly platforming with weapon-based action, and Returnal supplies a science-fiction identity. This variety makes Sony’s lineup feel like a collection of deliberately differentiated series rather than one genre repeated under different names.
Older families and catalog continuity
The same PlayStation studio catalog references older Sucker Punch series such as Sly Cooper and Infamous. Their inclusion demonstrates historical franchise depth, although a catalog listing is not the same as an announcement of a new PS5 release. They are useful when assessing the breadth of PlayStation’s lineage, not when promising a current game or a launch date.

Halo, Gears and Forza
Xbox’s most recognizable pillars remain Halo, Gears of War and Forza. They cover first-person shooting, third-person action and racing, respectively. Xbox’s 2026 showcase highlighted Halo and Gears of War, while the January 2026 Developer Direct discussed Forza Horizon 6. These families give Xbox a strong identity among players who prioritize shooters, competitive driving and action campaigns.
The qualification is availability. Xbox’s announcements describe Gears of War: Reloaded as coming to Xbox, Steam and PlayStation 5. That makes it an Xbox-associated franchise release, not an Xbox-console exclusive. The 2026 announcement also says Halo: Campaign Evolved pre-orders are available across Xbox, Steam and PlayStation, and identifies Xbox Series X|S and PC among its platforms. The announcement’s wording and date should be used as the authority for that title; it should not be generalized to every Halo game.
Fable and role-playing breadth
Fable gives Xbox a fantasy role-playing identity distinct from its shooter and racing brands. Xbox’s January 22, 2026 Developer Direct states that the new Fable is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PC, Steam and PlayStation 5. The announcement therefore confirms a broad release plan rather than a console-exclusive one. It remains an important Xbox-owned franchise, but ownership and PS5 availability coexist.
DOOM, Senua and State of Decay
The Xbox 2026 showcase highlighted DOOM, Senua and State of Decay. Those names expand the portfolio into fast first-person combat, psychological action and survival. They demonstrate why a simple “Xbox has no exclusives” claim would be wrong: Xbox controls a deep set of recognizable properties. The correct statement is that the value of some of those properties is delivered through a multi-platform publishing strategy.

Minecraft-related games and wider reach
Minecraft-related titles, including Minecraft Dungeons, show another side of the Xbox portfolio. The family reaches audiences far beyond a single console generation and includes cooperative and creative play. That broad reach strengthens Xbox as an ecosystem, even though it weakens the argument that ownership alone makes a franchise a reason to buy Xbox Series X over PS5.

Other announced Xbox-associated releases
The 2025 Xbox showcase listed PlayStation 5 versions of Ninja Gaiden 4 and The Outer Worlds 2, alongside Xbox and PC availability. It also announced Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 for PlayStation 5 and PS4 as well as Xbox, PC and other platforms. These examples show how a major Xbox publishing portfolio can add high-profile games to the Xbox ecosystem without creating a rival-console lockout.
Confirmed platform examples and what they mean
| Franchise or title | Platforms stated in the cited announcement | How to interpret the status |
|---|---|---|
| Fable (new game) | Xbox Series X|S, PC, Steam and PlayStation 5; Xbox Developer Direct, January 22, 2026. | Xbox-owned and ecosystem-important, but the announced PS5 version means this entry is not an Xbox-console exclusive. |
| Forza Horizon 6 | Launching first on Xbox, PC and Steam, with a PS5 release later in 2026; Xbox Developer Direct, January 22, 2026. | A timed lead for Xbox and PC was announced. Later PS5 availability means the lead should not be described as permanent exclusivity. |
| Kiln | Xbox platforms, PlayStation 5 and Steam in the January 2026 Developer Direct listing. | A multi-platform release in the announcement, not evidence of an Xbox-only game. |
| Gears of War: Reloaded | Xbox, Steam and PlayStation 5; Xbox Games Showcase, June 8, 2025. | A major Xbox-associated franchise entry with a confirmed PS5 version. |
| Ninja Gaiden 4 | PlayStation 5 listed alongside Xbox and PC in the 2025 showcase. | Important to Xbox’s publishing portfolio, but not a console-exclusive release. |
| The Outer Worlds 2 | PlayStation 5 listed alongside Xbox and PC in the 2025 showcase. | Platform availability crosses the console boundary. |
| Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 | PlayStation 5 and PS4, Xbox, PC and other platforms; 2025 showcase. | A high-profile Xbox-associated series that remains available on rival PlayStation consoles. |
| Halo: Campaign Evolved | The 2026 showcase says pre-orders are available across Xbox, Steam and PlayStation and identifies Xbox Series X|S and PC among platforms. | Use the announcement’s stated status and date. Do not infer a universal platform rule for all Halo entries. |
| Ghost of Yōtei | PlayStation 5 exclusive; Sony’s PS5 product page also lists a standard Blu-ray edition. | A concrete PS5-linked example, without proving permanent exclusivity for the entire Ghost franchise. |
“Not listed” should never be silently converted into “exclusive.” A platform list is a statement about the named announcement, region and date. Release plans can change, and a timed launch window is not the same as a permanent restriction.

| Racing | Gran Turismo | Forza | Both platforms have a defining racing family; check the individual game’s release plan. |
| Action-adventure | God of War, Ghost, Ratchet & Clank | Gears, DOOM, Senua | PlayStation emphasizes cinematic and character-led adventures; Xbox offers heavier shooter and horror representation. |
| Shooters | PlayStation’s cited catalog is less centered on a single console-linked shooter family. | Halo, DOOM, Gears, Call of Duty-related publishing | Xbox has the deeper shooter identity, although several announced releases also reach PlayStation. |
| Platforming | ASTRO BOT, Ratchet & Clank | Minecraft Dungeons-related offerings | PS5 has the clearer first-party platforming signature in the cited catalogs. |
| Role-playing and fantasy | God of War includes mythic action; other catalog entries vary by style. | Fable and The Outer Worlds 2 broaden Xbox’s role-playing profile. | Xbox’s named portfolio is broader here, but Fable and The Outer Worlds 2 have announced PS5 availability. |
| Science fiction and survival | Returnal | State of Decay, Senua | Both offer distinctive settings, with different combat and pacing priorities. |
Available games, announced games and future promises
Keep three categories separate when making a buying decision:
- Available now: a game you can purchase and play on the stated console. This is the strongest evidence of what the hardware offers today.
- Announced with platforms: a publisher has publicly named the supported systems, but launch timing or final specifications can still change.
- Historical or catalog association: a franchise appears in a studio catalog or has earlier entries, but no current PS5 or Xbox Series X|S release is promised.
Ghost of Yōtei is a useful example of the second category with unusually clear platform language: Sony identifies it as a PS5 exclusive and lists a standard Blu-ray edition. Forza Horizon 6 illustrates why timing matters: Xbox’s January 2026 announcement described an initial Xbox, PC and Steam launch followed by a PS5 release later in 2026. Treating that first window as permanent exclusivity would misstate the announcement.
Announcements also have different scopes. The 2026 Xbox showcase highlights families and projects, while the Developer Direct provides more specific platform plans for selected games. A showcase mention of Halo does not automatically establish the status of every other Halo title. Always attach the platform claim to the exact game and announcement date.
Which console should you choose?
Choose PS5 when console exclusivity is your top priority
PS5 is the more defensible choice if you want a console whose identity is built around recognizable series that are strongly linked to PlayStation. The cited catalog gives you a broad spread: Gran Turismo for racing, God of War and Ghost for action-adventure, Spider-Man and The Last of Us for blockbuster and narrative action, and ASTRO BOT, Ratchet & Clank and Returnal for platforming and science fiction. Confirm each game’s current platform before buying, especially for future entries.
Choose Xbox Series X when your favorite series are Xbox’s core families
Xbox Series X makes sense when your priority is the games themselves rather than a strict hardware lockout. Fans of Halo, Gears, Forza, DOOM, Fable, State of Decay or Minecraft-related games will find a deep portfolio. The Xbox ecosystem can also be the practical choice for someone who plays on Windows PC or Steam and wants the same publisher family represented across devices.
Choose based on a specific game, not a corporate logo
Make a short list of the three to five franchises you actually intend to play, then check the platform announcement for each upcoming entry. A player buying for Forza Horizon 6 should account for the announced later-2026 PS5 version. A player buying for Ghost of Yōtei has a clearly stated PS5-exclusive example. A player interested in Fable or Gears of War: Reloaded should know that PS5 versions are part of the cited plans.
Common mistakes in exclusive-lineup comparisons
- Counting ownership as exclusivity: Microsoft or Sony owning a franchise does not determine every game’s console availability.
- Counting individual editions as separate franchises: remasters, annual installments and special editions inflate totals without adding new franchise families.
- Turning a timed launch into a permanent advantage: a later PS5 release changes the long-term comparison.
- Assuming catalog presence guarantees a new game: a studio page can show historical series without promising a current release.
- Ignoring PC: Xbox’s stated platform strategy often includes PC and Steam, so Xbox-console exclusivity and Xbox-ecosystem access are different measures.
- Using quality as a substitute for availability: this comparison does not provide a common review score, sales measure or independent quality ranking.
- Generalizing from one announcement: a platform list for one entry does not establish the status of every title in that franchise.
A practical checklist before you buy
- Write down the franchise families that matter most to you.
- For each desired game, record the exact announced platforms, not just the publisher’s name.
- Mark whether the game is available, announced, timed or only historically associated with the console.
- Check the announcement date and any stated later-release window.
- Decide whether PC access satisfies your needs or whether you specifically want the game on console hardware.
- Only then compare the consoles’ broader features, storage, controllers, subscriptions and pricing.
The evidence supports a qualified verdict: PlayStation 5 has the stronger lineup of distinctive, console-linked exclusive franchises, while Xbox Series X has a formidable portfolio whose reach increasingly extends across Xbox, PC, Steam and, for selected releases, PlayStation 5. Your preferred series and the exact platform status of the games you want should make the final decision.
