The better buy is the console that preserves more of the games you already own. Choose Xbox Series X if your purchases are concentrated on Xbox One, selected Xbox 360 or original Xbox titles, and the Xbox account or community you already use. Choose PlayStation 5 if most of your collection is on PS4 or the PlayStation catalog contains the games you care about. Neither platform guarantees compatibility with every older game, every disc, or every console configuration, so verify your essential titles before spending money.

Quick answer: match the console to your library

A new console is also a decision about your existing purchases. Start with your account libraries and physical discs, not with general hardware comparisons. The broad compatibility statements from Microsoft and Sony are useful starting points, but they do not replace a title-by-title check.

If this describes you Better starting point Why
Your owned games are mainly Xbox One titles, with some supported Xbox 360 or original Xbox games Xbox Series X Series X supports Xbox One games and selected games from the Xbox 360 and original Xbox generations. Older-generation support is selective.
Your owned games are mainly PS4 titles PlayStation 5 Sony says PS5 is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games.
You rely on physical discs Whichever platform passes both checks The game must be compatible, and the exact console configuration must include a disc drive that can read it.
Your priority is a subscription catalog Compare the catalogs themselves Look for the specific games you play, then check current local plan terms, catalog availability and streaming limits.
Your friends or must-play new releases are concentrated on one platform That platform Community and game availability are individual decisions; neither is a universal advantage.

Do not use a compatibility percentage, a marketing slogan or a friend’s library as a substitute for your own inventory. A single unavailable favorite can matter more than dozens of games you never intend to play.

Inventory your games before comparing consoles

Separate digital purchases from discs

Make two lists: digital games tied to your platform account and physical discs on your shelf. A digital purchase generally follows the account that bought it, while a disc requires a compatible drive and the disc itself. Record the exact edition where it matters: standard release, remaster, bundle, downloadable version or a game with a separate upgrade path.

#1 Best Overall
Xbox Series X | Disc Gaming Console | 1TB SSD | Includes Wireless Controller, 4K Gaming, 120FPS, Carbon Black
  • FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL XBOX — Experience next-generation performance with 12 teraflops of processing power, delivering smoother gameplay, richer worlds, and faster responsiveness than any previous XBOX.
  • TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
  • 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
  • QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.

Also record downloadable expansions and saved progress. Compatibility for the base game does not automatically answer whether every add-on, cross-generation entitlement or cloud save behaves identically. Check the publisher’s listing for each title that would influence your decision.

Rank the library instead of counting it

Mark each game as essential, important or optional. Then note whether you own it digitally or physically. This prevents a large collection of rarely played games from outweighing a handful of titles you expect to play every week.

  • Essential: games you would buy the console to keep playing.
  • Important: games you want available, but could replace or skip.
  • Optional: games that should not decide the purchase.

Check the account that owns each digital game

Before buying, sign in to the relevant Microsoft or PlayStation account and confirm that your purchase history is visible. Do not assume that a disc bought for one platform transfers to the other, or that a digital purchase on one family of consoles creates an entitlement on another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify titles individually

Search the official compatibility or store listing for every essential title. Check the supported edition, whether the game is delisted, whether online services still operate, and whether any upgrade has a fee or an expiry. A broad platform statement cannot confirm the status of a particular game.

How Xbox Series X handles older Xbox games

What Microsoft officially supports

Microsoft describes Xbox Series X|S backward compatibility as free and says it lets owners play selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, as well as Xbox One games they already own. The important word is selected for the older generations. This is not a promise that every Xbox game ever released will run.

Microsoft’s official wording is: “Xbox Series X|S Backward Compatibility is free and allows you to play selected Xbox 360, Original Xbox games and Xbox One games you already own on Xbox Series X|S.” Treat that as a platform-level description, then confirm the individual title.

Enhancements for supported games

Microsoft identifies Auto HDR and FPS Boost as enhancements for supported backward-compatible games. They apply only where Microsoft has enabled them; they are not a guarantee that every older title receives higher frame rates or high-dynamic-range output. If a visual or performance improvement matters to you, check the game’s current support information rather than assuming the feature is present.

What the 500,000-hour figure does—and does not—mean

Microsoft reports more than 500,000 hours spent testing Xbox Series X|S backward-compatible titles against quality standards. The official page does not establish a year for that figure. It describes Microsoft’s testing effort, not an independent study, a game-count total or a comparison with Sony. Do not use it to conclude that Xbox supports more games than PS5.

Xbox verification procedure

  1. List your essential Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games.
  2. For each title, check Microsoft’s current backward-compatibility listing or the Xbox store page.
  3. Confirm whether your copy is digital or disc-based and whether the edition is included.
  4. For a disc, verify that the Series X configuration you intend to buy has a working optical drive.
  5. Check whether saved data, downloadable content and online services are still supported.
  6. Only after those checks should you count the title as preserved in your purchase decision.

How PlayStation 5 handles PS4 games

What Sony’s compatibility statement covers

Sony says PS5 is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games. “Overwhelming majority” is deliberately not the same as “every PS4 game,” so a small number of exceptions and edition-specific limitations remain possible.

For a digital PS4 purchase, sign in with the PlayStation account that owns it and look for the PS5 version or compatibility information in the store. For a physical copy, confirm both that the game is supported and that the PS5 configuration includes a disc drive.

PS4-to-PS5 upgrades

Sony notes that a player may have the option to upgrade a PS4 game to a digital PS5 version. The upgrade is not automatically free, universal or permanent for every title. The game’s publisher sets the terms, which can vary by edition, region and time. Check the product page before assuming that an upgrade is included in the price of your PS4 copy.

PS5 verification procedure

  1. Export a list of your essential PS4 games, separating digital purchases and discs.
  2. Check each game’s PlayStation store page or the publisher’s compatibility notice.
  3. Read the upgrade terms carefully; distinguish a free entitlement from a paid upgrade or a separate purchase.
  4. Confirm that your chosen PS5 model can read your physical discs.
  5. Check whether expansions, save transfers and online features require additional steps.

Physical discs and console configurations

Compatibility and hardware configuration are separate questions. A title can be supported by the platform but unusable for you if your console lacks a disc drive. Console families can include different configurations, and the sources for this comparison do not establish a complete model-by-model drive list.

Before ordering a physical-game console, write down:

  • The exact model or configuration name.
  • Whether an optical disc drive is installed, included separately or absent.
  • Whether your game is on a compatible disc format and edition.
  • Whether the console requires an internet download or update after inserting the disc.
  • Whether a digital entitlement is needed for an upgrade or additional content.

Do not infer drive availability from a product photograph or from the name of the console family. Read the regional product page for the exact unit you plan to buy.

Subscriptions: compare the games, not just the service names

What PlayStation Plus provides

Sony describes PlayStation Plus as offering game and classics catalogs. Sony also says Premium members can stream games from those catalogs to PS5, PS4 or PC. Catalog titles, plan benefits, streaming availability and regional terms can change, so verify the current offering in your country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Streaming can be valuable if you want to sample a game without downloading it, but it depends on a suitable connection and on the title remaining in the catalog. A game included today may leave later, while a purchased game remains tied to your account under its purchase terms.

How to compare the Xbox side fairly

Do not assume that a general subscription comparison proves which console is cheaper or offers more games. The current Xbox plan, price and catalog were not established for a particular country here. Open the local Xbox subscription page and compare the exact titles you want, download or streaming conditions, online multiplayer requirements and renewal price.

Subscription decision table

Question What to check Why it matters
Is my must-play game included? Search the current catalog by exact title and edition. Catalog size is less useful than availability of the games you actually play.
Will it remain available? Look for removal notices and license terms. Catalog access is not the same as ownership.
Can I download or stream it? Check plan level, region and device support. Streaming and downloads have different connection and storage requirements.
What will I pay after an introductory period? Read the recurring local price and renewal terms. A promotional price is not the long-term cost.

Desired games and friends can outweigh compatibility

Once your existing library is covered, list the games you intend to buy next. Verify the exact platform release, edition and any cross-generation entitlement. A game available on both consoles may still have different upgrade rules, performance modes or online requirements.

Ask where your friends play and whether the games you share support cross-platform multiplayer. If a regular group uses one platform, the practical value of that community may exceed a small difference in backward-compatible titles. This is a personal preference, not evidence that one ecosystem is universally better.

Calculate the real cost in your country

Current prices, stock and configurations were not established for a particular country in the available evidence. Use the local official store or an authorized retailer immediately before purchase. Record the complete first-year cost rather than comparing console sticker prices alone.

Cost item Record
Exact console configuration Model name, disc-drive status and included accessories
Games you must rebuy Only titles not preserved by compatibility or an upgrade entitlement
Subscription Local plan, recurring price and renewal date
Storage or accessories Only items required for your own library and setup
Shipping, tax and warranty Regional checkout total and coverage

A lower console price can disappear if it forces you to repurchase several essential games or buy a separate drive. Conversely, a higher-priced configuration may be cheaper for a disc-heavy library if it prevents duplicate purchases.

A practical scoring method

Use a simple weighted score to make the decision auditable. Give each essential game five points, each important game three points and each optional game one point. Award the points to a console only when the title is confirmed compatible in your edition and ownership format.

Then add:

  • Three points for the platform containing your preferred friend group.
  • Three points for the platform with the new game you are most likely to buy.
  • Two points for the subscription catalog that contains a game you would otherwise purchase soon.
  • Two points if the configuration already includes the drive you need.

Subtract the cost of required repurchases and accessories using your local prices. The score is a decision aid, not a technical benchmark; if one console fails a single non-negotiable requirement, reject it regardless of points.

Which console fits common library situations?

You own mostly Xbox One games

Start with Xbox Series X. Confirm the few titles that matter most, especially discs and games with discontinued online services. Selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox support can add value, but do not count an older game until it appears on the current compatibility list.

You own mostly PS4 games

Start with PS5 because Sony’s stated support covers the overwhelming majority of PS4 games. Check exceptions and upgrade terms individually, particularly if you own discs or want the digital PS5 version.

Your collection is split evenly

Let your essential titles, friends and next purchases decide. Make two verified lists and compare the number of high-weight games that remain playable without repurchase. Then compare exact configurations and local total cost.

You are starting from zero

Compatibility matters less than the games you plan to buy, the people you play with and the subscription catalog available in your market. Choose the ecosystem whose current and expected library best matches those priorities, then select the configuration that fits your physical-media plans.

Buying checklist

  1. Export or write down both digital and physical libraries.
  2. Mark essential, important and optional games.
  3. Verify every essential title on the appropriate official compatibility or store page.
  4. Confirm disc-drive availability for the exact console configuration.
  5. Check upgrade pricing instead of assuming an upgrade is free.
  6. Compare the specific subscription catalogs and local renewal prices.
  7. Check friends, desired new releases and online-service requirements.
  8. Calculate console, games, subscription, tax and accessories together.
  9. Recheck stock, regional pricing and model details at checkout.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming “backward compatible” means everything works

Xbox support for older generations is selective, and PS5 support covers the overwhelming majority rather than every PS4 game. Verify each essential title.

Buying a digital configuration for a disc library

Check the exact model’s drive status before ordering. A supported disc cannot help if the console cannot read it.

Treating an upgrade as ownership of two versions

A PS4-to-PS5 upgrade may be available, but terms vary and may involve a fee. Read the game-specific offer.

Using a headline statistic as a game-count comparison

Microsoft’s more-than-500,000-hours figure describes testing effort, not the number of supported games and not a comparison with Sony.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing subscription prices without checking the market

Plan catalogs, benefits and prices vary by region and change over time. Use the local plan page and the titles you actually want.

Bottom line

Buy Xbox Series X when your verified Xbox One library, selected older Xbox games, friends and future purchases outweigh the alternatives. Buy PS5 when your verified PS4 collection or PlayStation game preferences do. The responsible choice is not the console with the broadest-sounding claim; it is the configuration that keeps your essential games playable at the lowest complete local cost.
