The $1,600 figure is not established as the standard US price of an Xbox Series X. A GamesRadar report put the US disc model at $800 in October 2026, while Microsoft’s Store listing showed a $649.99 starting price and an out-of-stock prompt. Those are different listing contexts, not a universal price or proof of a retail shortage. Microsoft has cited rising memory and storage costs, and it named two console exclusives in June 2026—but neither point establishes that every Xbox game will remain exclusive.
How much does an Xbox Series X cost now?
There is no single price established for every market and configuration. In October 2026, GamesRadar reported that the US disc version was priced at $800 amid recent console price increases. Microsoft’s Store page, accessed October 12, 2026, displayed “Starting From $649.99” alongside an “Out of stock?” prompt. The listing does not establish which configuration or market applies to every buyer, so check the live Microsoft page and participating retailers for your country before purchasing: Microsoft Store Xbox Series X and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X product page.
The reported $800 US price and the Store’s $649.99 starting price are not directly interchangeable: they come from different sources and listing contexts. The reviewed sources do not corroborate $1,600 as the standard US price. A figure that high would need to identify its market, console configuration, seller, and date; otherwise, it should not be treated as the console’s normal price.

Why has the price risen?
Microsoft attributes recent console price pressure to memory and storage component costs. In a June 25, 2026 announcement, the company said console storage and memory prices had risen by more than 2.5 times and said it expected another doubling by fall 2027. That is Microsoft’s explanation, not an independent audit of component markets or retail pricing: Xbox’s June 25 price update.

In a separate June 10 Xbox Wire post, CEO Asha Sharma described Microsoft’s own internal costs for console storage components. She wrote: “When I joined as CEO in February, the price we paid for console storage components was over 2x as high as we paid last fall.” She added, “These costs have since doubled again,” and said another significant increase was expected by the 2027 holiday season. These are statements about Microsoft’s costs, not independently measured retail prices: Sharma’s Xbox Wire post.
Is the Xbox Series X out of stock?
Microsoft’s Store listing showed an “Out of stock?” prompt when accessed October 12, 2026, but a single page observation cannot establish availability across retailers or regions. Microsoft says availability depends on the market and directs shoppers to participating retailers. Check local listings and confirm that the specific model is actually in stock before relying on a displayed price.

The reviewed sources do not provide a named regulator, independent auditor, or primary dataset that quantifies current Xbox Series X retail shortages. GamesRadar reported US year-to-date hardware sales through August 2026, citing Circana analyst Mat Piscatella: Xbox hardware unit sales were down 33% year over year, compared with a 25% decline for PlayStation hardware. The article also described Xbox’s US year-to-date hardware unit sales as an all-time low. These are sales figures, not a measure of how often the console is unavailable, and they do not establish a shortage rate: GamesRadar’s report on console prices and sales.

At its June 7, 2026 showcase, Xbox announced Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as console exclusives and explicitly said they were not timed exclusives. Xbox also said games already announced for multiplatform release would stay on that plan. This establishes the company’s announcement about those titles and its stated position on existing plans—not a guarantee that all Xbox games will be exclusive or that previous multiplatform decisions have been reversed: Xbox’s June 7 showcase announcement.

In a June 9 report, Windows Central quoted Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball describing a “reliable pipeline” of exclusives and acknowledging that some Xbox exclusives would sell fewer units than if released on multiple platforms. Those comments are Ball’s outlook as reported by Windows Central, distinct from the company’s showcase announcement: Windows Central’s report on Ball’s comments.

Price and stock are only part of the decision. Microsoft describes the Series X as a native-4K console with a UHD Blu-ray disc player, 12 teraflops of graphics performance, up to 120 FPS, and a 1 TB custom SSD. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results: Microsoft’s Series X specifications.

Microsoft describes Series S as disc-free, designed for 1440p, and available with 512 GB or 1 TB storage. Both Series X and Series S support a storage expansion card. Microsoft says the Series X works with thousands of games across four Xbox generations and that most Xbox One controllers and accessories work with Series X|S.
- Local price and stock: Compare the price for the exact model at retailers serving your market, and confirm availability rather than assuming a listing is in stock.
- Disc drive or disc-free: Choose Series X if a UHD Blu-ray drive or physical games matter to you; Series S has no disc drive.
- Resolution and storage: Compare the Series X’s native-4K positioning and 1 TB SSD with Series S’s 1440p design and 512 GB or 1 TB options.
- Games and platforms: Check the confirmed platforms for the games you want. The June 2026 exclusivity announcement applied to two named titles, while Xbox said previously announced multiplatform releases would remain multiplatform.
- New or previously played: Microsoft points buyers to certified-refurbished consoles and said it planned lower-priced previously played hardware through retail partners. Verify the local offer and condition before deciding.
Microsoft says a Series X package includes the console, an Xbox controller, a high-speed HDMI cable, and a power cord. For additional game storage at the console’s custom SSD performance, Microsoft recommends the 1 TB Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S.
