Choose an Xbox Series X with a disc drive if you own compatible Xbox discs, want to buy or borrow physical games, or will use its UHD Blu-ray player. Choose digital games if you prefer an account-based library and do not want to handle discs. A disc game still installs to console storage, and for compatible disc-based backward-compatible games, the disc must remain inserted to provide the play license.

What changes—and what does not—when you use a disc?

A disc game still installs to storage

The disc is not a way to avoid using the console’s storage. Compatible disc games install to local storage, and the game runs from that storage during play. Xbox explains that for a disc game, the disc still supplies the license. Xbox Wire’s storage primer describes this distinction.

The disc may be required to play

For compatible disc-based backward-compatible games, Xbox says the game downloads to the hard drive but the disc must stay in the drive while you play. That disc requirement is different from the digital purchase model, where access is associated with the account library. For account, platform or other edge cases, check the applicable Xbox terms.

Backward compatibility is selective

Series X|S supports selected Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games; support does not cover every title from those generations. A Series S is digital-only and cannot play physical game discs. Check the individual game before relying on an old disc working on your console. Xbox’s backward-compatibility page provides the official scope and guidance.

What the August 2026 disc-to-digital feature does

On August 26, 2026, Xbox Wire announced a feature that lets supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs claim a digital entitlement. Xbox said Xbox Insiders could begin testing it on August 31, 2026. The announcement described support for most Xbox One and Series X disc-based games, starting with thousands of titles, while warning that not every title would be available at launch. Read Xbox Wire’s announcement.

How to check a disc

  1. Insert the Xbox One or Series X game disc into a Series X with an optical drive.
  2. Launch the disc and check whether the console prompts you to accept a digital license. Xbox’s product page identifies that prompt as the way to check eligibility.
  3. If the prompt is offered, follow the console’s instructions to claim the entitlement. The disc must be inserted and launched to claim it.

Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are not supported by this announced feature. Eligibility is title-specific and support may change, so use the console’s prompt rather than assuming a particular disc qualifies. The announcement describes the goal as making it easier for players’ libraries to move forward; it does not promise that every disc becomes a digital license or guarantee permanent access to every title.

How to decide based on your library and habits

Choose the disc-drive Series X if

  • You have compatible Xbox discs you want to keep playing.
  • You want the option to buy or borrow physical game copies.
  • You will use the console’s UHD Blu-ray Disc player.
  • You want to check whether eligible Xbox One or Series X discs can claim the announced digital entitlement.

Choose digital games if

  • You do not have a disc collection you need to use.
  • You value accessing games from your account library without handling or storing discs.
  • You are comfortable buying games digitally and using local console storage for installations.

Compare prices title by title

There is no established rule that physical or digital is always cheaper. Compare the same title and edition in your market, accounting for the physical copy’s condition and any current store promotion. Physical-game availability and resale value vary, so do not count on a particular saving or resale return.

Bottom line

The disc-drive Series X is the more flexible choice if compatible discs or UHD Blu-ray matter to you. Digital purchasing is the simpler fit if you want an account-based library and a disc-free routine. The 2026 disc-to-digital feature adds an option for supported Xbox One and Series X discs, but it does not make every old disc eligible.
