For a Minecraft-first buyer, the 1TB Xbox Series S is usually the value choice if you play digitally and use a 1080p or 1440p screen. Choose an Xbox Series X when you have a 4K television, want physical discs, need more rendering headroom, or expect a larger game library. Both consoles run the Series X|S-optimized version of Minecraft, including the Vibrant Visuals update, but Microsoft publishes platform targets rather than a universal, scene-by-scene Minecraft benchmark.
The deciding factors are therefore display, storage, disc access and the price available in your market on the day you buy—not a promise of a permanently higher Minecraft frame rate on Series X.

|---|---|---|
| Minecraft, digital purchases and a 1080p or 1440p display | Xbox Series S 1TB | Lower positioning in Microsoft’s lineup, an SSD, Series X|S optimization and enough capacity for a Minecraft-focused library without paying for 4K hardware you may not see. |
| 4K television or monitor | Xbox Series X | Xbox presents Series X as its sharper 4K-focused console, with more graphics headroom for high-detail rendering. |
| Physical Minecraft discs or backward-compatible discs | Xbox Series X with optical drive | The standard 1TB Series X includes a disc drive; Series S is digital-only in the cited lineup. |
| Several large Series-optimized games | Series X 1TB or 2TB | Series X offers 1TB and 2TB models, while Series S is sold in 512GB and 1TB capacities. |
| Local split-screen Minecraft | Either console | Both support split-screen, but Minecraft switches from Vibrant Visuals to Fancy or Simple rendering when multiple local players join. |

How Minecraft is optimized on both consoles
The Xbox store labels Minecraft “Optimized for XBOX Series X|S.” That designation means the game has a Series S|X build and can use the consoles’ current-generation hardware features. It does not mean every scene runs at an identical resolution or frame rate on both machines.

Xbox positions Series S around a 1440p-at-60-FPS performance target, with support for up to 120 FPS. Series X is presented as delivering sharper 4K detail and gameplay of up to 120 FPS. These are console-level targets. They are not a guarantee that Minecraft maintains a fixed resolution or frame rate in every world, graphics preset, split-screen session or display configuration.
Minecraft performance and graphics
Display targets: 1080p, 1440p and 4K
Series S is designed for televisions and monitors below the 4K premium tier. Xbox’s published target is 1440p at 60 FPS, with support for up to 120 FPS. A 1080p screen will display a lower output resolution, but it can still benefit from the console’s SSD, current-generation CPU and optimized software.
Series X is the appropriate hardware match for a 4K display. Xbox describes it as delivering sharper 4K detail and up to 120-FPS gameplay. In Minecraft, that extra GPU capacity gives the X more room for high-resolution assets and visual effects, but no official source establishes a single native resolution or frame-rate number for every Minecraft mode. Do not treat “4K” or “120 FPS” as a permanent setting that every world will hold.
Vibrant Visuals
Minecraft’s Vibrant Visuals refresh is available on Xbox Series X|S. It adds reflective water, volumetric lighting and enhanced textures, then lets you choose between Favor Visuals and Favor Performance presets. Mojang describes Vibrant Visuals as a cosmetic enhancement that does not affect gameplay mechanics.
The presets are a practical way to match the console to your screen and priorities:
- Favor Visuals: choose this when richer lighting, reflections and texture detail matter more than maximizing performance headroom.
- Favor Performance: choose this when responsiveness and steadier performance matter more than the strongest visual treatment.
The names describe the trade-off, not a guaranteed frame rate. Your display must also support the refresh rate you want to use; a 120-Hz panel is required to see a 120-FPS output when a game mode supports it.

Split-screen behavior
When multiple local players join a Minecraft session, the game switches away from Vibrant Visuals to Fancy or Simple rendering. That behavior applies to Series S and Series X. If couch co-op is your main use, the more expensive console will not preserve Vibrant Visuals for a split-screen session; both systems use the multiplayer rendering fallback documented by the Xbox store and Mojang.

What the official figures do not prove
There is no reproducible, official Series S-versus-Series X Minecraft benchmark in the supplied specifications. You should not promise a fixed FPS advantage, a fixed render distance, or a guaranteed native resolution for one console without a test performed under the same world, preset, display and player count. The defensible comparison is that Series X has the higher hardware and 4K positioning, while Series S is designed around a lower-resolution value target.
Storage: 512GB, 1TB and 2TB choices
Capacity comparison
| Console/model | Capacity documented by Xbox | Practical implication for a Minecraft buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Series S | 512GB | Lowest entry capacity. System software occupies part of the drive, leaving less working space for Minecraft updates, captures and other games. |
| Series S | 1TB | Safer digital-library choice; the extra capacity reduces the chance of managing installs soon after purchase. |
| Series X Digital | 1TB in the November 15, 2024 U.S. listing | Digital-only Series X option in that dated listing; confirm the exact current model and price before buying. |
| Series X | 1TB | Combines the larger console’s performance positioning with an optical drive in the standard model. |
| Series X 2TB Galaxy Black | 2TB | Largest built-in capacity in Xbox’s documented lineup, intended for a broad digital library. |
Minecraft itself is only one part of the storage decision. World backups, downloadable content, screenshots, clips, system updates and other Series-optimized games all use the internal SSD. Because usable space is lower than the number printed on the box, the 512GB Series S requires the most frequent install management. The 1TB Series S is the sensible middle ground when Minecraft is central but the budget does not stretch to Series X.
Expansion cards and USB drives
Both consoles support the Seagate Storage Expansion Card. Microsoft says Series-optimized games can run directly from that card with the same performance as internal storage.
Recommended Free Tools
A USB 3.1 drive can store Series games and run Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Series-optimized games may need to be moved back to the internal SSD or a supported expansion card before they will launch. A USB drive is therefore useful as a library and archive, but it is not a full substitute for fast expansion when you want to play current-generation games directly.
Expansion adds to the console’s total cost. If you already know you will buy several large games, compare the price of a 1TB Series S plus an expansion card with a Series X model that includes more internal capacity. For Minecraft alone, an expansion card is unlikely to be the first upgrade you need; for a growing digital library, it can be more economical than repeatedly deleting and reinstalling games.
Disc access and digital ownership
The standard 1TB Series X includes an optical disc drive. That matters if you own Minecraft or other Xbox-compatible games on disc, buy used copies, lend games to family members, or want a physical collection. The Series S models in the cited lineup are digital-only, so every game must come from the Xbox store or a code redeemed to your account.
A digital-only console can be convenient: purchases, updates and cloud entitlements stay tied to your account, and there is no disc to insert. It also means you cannot use a physical license later, even if a disc copy is cheaper than the store price. Decide this before choosing Series S; an external USB drive cannot add disc playback.

Price comparison: use the date with every figure
Xbox pricing changed materially between the two official U.S. references below. These are historical U.S. ERP (estimated retail price) listings, not a live quote or a guarantee of what a retailer charges today. Check the current price, stock and included accessories at the retailer you intend to use.
| Model | Xbox Wire U.S. ERP, Nov. 15, 2024 | Microsoft U.S. pricing PDF, Oct. 3, 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Series S 512GB | $299.99 | $399.99 |
| Series S 1TB | $349.99 | $449.99 |
| Series X Digital | $449.99 (1TB in this listing) | $599.99 (capacity not specified in the listing) |
| Series X | $499.99 (1TB) | $649.99 |
| Series X 2TB Galaxy Black | $599.99 | $799.99 |
The two lists show why a 2024 article can give a misleading answer in 2026: the documented U.S. figures increased, and the 2025 PDF uses slightly different model labels. Treat the table as a dated reference. A sale, bundle or regional price can change the value calculation, especially when the gap between a 1TB Series S and Series X is small.
What Minecraft costs beyond the console
The Xbox store lists Minecraft at $19.99+. The “+” indicates that the displayed amount is a starting price in the store listing rather than a promise that every edition or bundle costs exactly $19.99.
Console online multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, according to the same listing. Those eligible tiers also include Minecraft. A subscription can therefore replace a separate game purchase for an eligible member, but it is a recurring service cost and plan availability or naming can change. Check the store page and your account region before budgeting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLocal split-screen does not depend on an online multiplayer subscription, but it does use the rendering behavior described earlier: Vibrant Visuals is replaced by Fancy or Simple when multiple players join locally.
Is Xbox Series S good enough for Minecraft?
Yes, for most Minecraft players who use a 1080p or 1440p display and buy digitally. It runs the optimized Series X|S version, supports Vibrant Visuals, uses fast SSD storage and targets 1440p at 60 FPS with support for up to 120 FPS. The 1TB model is preferable to 512GB if Minecraft will share the drive with other games.
Series S becomes a less attractive choice when any of these are true:

- Access your favorite entertainment through apps like YouTube, Netflix, and more
- Enjoy over 100 games right out of the box with a 1 month Xbox Game Pass trial
- Watch 4K Blu-ray movies and stream 4K video on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Microsoft Movies & TV, and more
- Play with friends and family near and farsitting together on the sofa or around the world on Xbox Live, the fastest, most reliable gaming network
- Xbox One games and accessories work together
- Your main screen is 4K and you want the sharpest presentation Xbox offers.
- You own or plan to buy physical discs.
- You expect a large collection of Series-optimized games and do not want an expansion card.
- The current price is close to a discounted Series X.
None of those conditions makes Minecraft unplayable on Series S; they change what you pay for and how often you manage storage.
Is Series X worth it for Minecraft?
Series X is worth the premium when the console will be connected to a 4K screen, when disc playback has real value, or when you want the greatest graphics headroom and built-in storage options. Its 1TB and 2TB configurations also suit a household that treats Minecraft as one game among many.
If Minecraft is the only demanding game you expect to play, your display is 1080p, and you are comfortable with digital purchases, the extra Series X hardware may be difficult to see. Vibrant Visuals is available on both consoles, and local split-screen uses the same fallback rendering modes on both. The case for Series X is then about resolution headroom, discs and capacity rather than a documented universal FPS advantage.

Child or family console for Minecraft and a few digital games
Pick the 1TB Series S when the television is 1080p or 1440p. It leaves more usable room than the 512GB model without paying for features the family may not use. Add an expansion card only after the internal drive becomes a real constraint.

Pick Series X. Its product positioning is built around sharper 4K detail, and the additional graphics capacity gives the display a better match. Verify whether the particular Series X listing includes the optical drive or is the digital model.
Physical-game household
Pick the disc-equipped 1TB Series X. Series S cannot read a disc, and a USB drive cannot change that limitation.
Large digital library
Compare Series X 2TB with Series X 1TB plus an expansion card, and compare both with a 1TB Series S plus expansion. Use the dated prices only as a starting point; current retailer pricing determines which combination is cheaper.

Setup checklist for the best Minecraft result
- Confirm the television or monitor’s native resolution and refresh rate. A 4K, 120-Hz display is the relevant match for Series X’s high-end target; a 1080p or 1440p panel is a natural Series S pairing.
- Install Minecraft from the Xbox store or redeem your physical or digital code, then allow the Series X|S-optimized update to finish before judging loading or graphics.
- Open Minecraft’s video settings and select Vibrant Visuals, then choose Favor Visuals or Favor Performance according to your priority. Remember that local split-screen uses Fancy or Simple rendering instead.
- Keep the game on the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card when you want to play the Series-optimized build. A USB 3.1 drive can archive it, but may require a move before launch.
- For online play, verify that your account has Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, as required by the store listing for console multiplayer.
- Check free space after installing the game and your first update. Reserve room for world backups, captures and future updates rather than filling the drive with other games immediately.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Buying 512GB because the sticker price looks lowest
The 512GB Series S has less working room after system software. If you expect several games, the 1TB Series S can cost less than buying the smaller console and adding storage soon afterward.
Assuming “up to 120 FPS” means Minecraft always runs at 120 FPS
That phrase describes a platform capability. Resolution, preset, world complexity, display support and player count affect the result. Use the published target as positioning, not as a guaranteed Minecraft benchmark.
Connecting a USB drive and expecting every Series game to run from it
USB 3.1 storage can hold Series games and run older Xbox generations, but Series-optimized games may need the internal SSD or an expansion card. Plan storage around where you will play the game, not only where you can archive it.
Comparing a 2024 price with a 2025 price as if both were current
Microsoft’s dated U.S. lists show substantial changes. Record the source date and region, then check the live retailer total, including bundles and taxes, before deciding that Series X or Series S is the bargain.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choosing Series S and later discovering a disc collection
Series S is digital-only in the cited lineup. If discs matter, buy a Series X model with the optical drive rather than assuming an accessory can be added later.
Bottom line
For Minecraft on a 1080p or 1440p display, the 1TB Series S delivers the essential Series X|S features at the value end of Microsoft’s lineup and is the default recommendation. Series X earns its premium through 4K-oriented presentation, an optical drive on the standard 1TB model, and 1TB or 2TB storage choices. Because the official material supplies targets and feature support rather than a universal Minecraft benchmark, make the final choice from your screen, library, disc needs and the dated price you can actually buy—not from an assumed fixed FPS difference.
