There is no universal winner. Choose the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition if your preferred games, friends, or existing purchases are on PlayStation. Choose Xbox Series S if you specifically want the Xbox ecosystem, Xbox backward compatibility, and Game Pass, or if the exact Series S configuration is meaningfully cheaper when you buy. The comparison is not between two equally positioned machines: Series S is Microsoft’s lower-spec Xbox model, while PS5 Digital Edition is Sony’s digital version of its PS5 platform.
Prices, storage capacities, bundles, and subscription terms change. Check the exact model and live checkout price on the day you purchase rather than relying on an old “Series S is always cheaper” comparison.
Quick verdict
| If this sounds like you | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your main games, friends, or purchases are on PlayStation | PS5 Digital Edition | Staying on the platform preserves access to your PS4 library and PlayStation network relationships. |
| You want Xbox exclusives, Xbox backward compatibility, or Game Pass | Xbox Series S | Series X|S supports Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles, and Game Pass is the Xbox subscription path. |
| You have a 4K television and want more performance headroom | Usually PS5 Digital Edition | Series S is designed around 1440p with 4K upscaling; there is no supplied controlled benchmark proving a specific percentage advantage for PS5, but the consoles occupy different performance tiers. |
| You need the lowest possible upfront cost | Check live prices first | US price increases reported for August 1, 2026 changed the old assumption that every Series S purchase is automatically cheaper. |
| You expect a large installed library | Compare the exact storage SKU | Series S is sold with either 512 GB or 1 TB, while the cited US PS5 Digital Edition listing names 825 GB. Advertised capacity is not the same as free usable space. |
What you are actually comparing
Both consoles are digital-first products. The Series S has no disc drive, and the PS5 Digital Edition is the PS5 configuration without an optical drive. Games bought on disc cannot be installed directly on either model, so your buying decision should include the cost and convenience of digital purchases, downloads, and subscriptions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The important distinction is product positioning. Microsoft’s official description calls Series S a console designed for disc-free gaming at 1440p, with the ability to upscale to 4K. It also advertises frame rates up to 120 frames per second where a game and display support that mode. Those are design targets and product claims, not a guarantee that every title renders at 1440p or reaches 120 fps.

The PS5 Digital Edition belongs to Sony’s PS5 platform and supports the same PS5 game ecosystem as the digital model is intended to serve. The supplied Sony pages establish PS5 features and backward compatibility, but they do not provide a controlled, game-by-game comparison against Series S. Avoid treating a specification sheet as a universal frame-rate or image-quality promise.
Performance and display choice
What Series S’s 1440p target means
Series S is aimed at 1440p gaming and can upscale output to a 4K television. A game may use a lower internal resolution, a dynamic resolution range, or a performance mode to maintain frame rate. Whether you see a 1440p image, an upscaled 4K signal, or another output depends on the title, its graphics modes, and your display.
The advertised “up to 120 fps” figure also has conditions. The game must include a high-frame-rate mode, the console must be configured correctly, and the television or monitor must support the required refresh rate and input features. Many games will run at lower frame rates or offer a choice between visual quality and performance.
How to think about the PS5 Digital Edition
Do not infer an exact performance percentage from the absence of a comparable number in the cited Sony listing. The evidence available here does not include laboratory tests, a common test suite, or measurements of identical games on both consoles. If you want a definitive answer for a particular title, look for current testing of that title and note the patch version, graphics mode, and display resolution.
Match the console to your screen
- 1080p television: Either console can be a sensible choice; the difference is more likely to come from your library, subscription needs, and price.
- 1440p monitor: Series S’s stated design target aligns naturally with this resolution, although individual games still determine their actual modes.
- 4K television: Series S can upscale to 4K, but that does not mean it renders every game natively at 4K. Choose PS5 Digital Edition if your game library and preference point to PlayStation, rather than assuming the display alone decides the purchase.
- 120 Hz display: Confirm support in the specific game and check the television or monitor’s input specifications. The console’s maximum claim is conditional, not universal.
Storage: compare the exact model, not the family name
| Console | Advertised configurations in the cited material | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S | 512 GB or 1 TB | Confirm which capacity is in the box. The difference affects how many large games you can keep installed before managing storage. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | 825 GB in the cited US direct listing | Verify the current generation and listing because the PS5 product family has had multiple model configurations. |
Neither advertised figure represents the space available for games after the operating system and reserved system data are installed. Large current games can consume a substantial portion of any internal drive, so storage management is part of ownership rather than a rare edge case.
Series S expansion
Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card connects through the dedicated expansion port. Microsoft says it provides added game storage at the same performance as the internal custom SSD. That makes it the relevant official expansion route when the internal drive is no longer sufficient.
The card is optional, not a mandatory accessory. Someone who rotates a small group of games may never need one; someone with a large digital library may value the ability to keep more titles installed. Confirm the card’s capacity, availability, seller, and current price before buying.

PS5 expansion decisions
The supplied evidence does not establish a current list of compatible PS5 M.2 SSD models or installation requirements. If you need more PS5 storage, consult Sony’s current support documentation for the exact console model and approved specifications instead of relying on an old compatibility list or a generic drive recommendation.
Game libraries and backward compatibility
Xbox
Microsoft’s backward-compatibility page says Xbox Series X|S supports Xbox One games plus selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles. Microsoft describes the feature as free. “Selected” matters: it is not a promise that every game from those generations runs on Series S. Check the individual title and the account that owns it.
Digital ownership is especially important on an all-digital console. A game you own digitally may be available to redownload if it is supported and tied to the correct Microsoft account. A physical Xbox disc cannot be used by Series S because the console has no disc drive.
PlayStation
Sony’s PS5 materials describe PS4 backward compatibility and Game Boost for selected PS4 games. Game Boost is not a guarantee that every PS4 title receives the same enhancement; look up the particular game and its current patch notes if performance is important.
A PS4 disc is not useful on a PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive. For digital purchases, verify that the game is attached to the PlayStation account you intend to use and that the edition you own is eligible for PS5 play or upgrade under the publisher’s terms.
Make a title-by-title checklist
- Write down the five to ten games you expect to play most.
- Mark whether each is owned digitally, owned on disc, or still needs to be purchased.
- Check the current backward-compatibility or PS5 version information for each title.
- Check which platform your regular multiplayer friends use.
- Only then compare console prices and bundles.
Online multiplayer and subscriptions
Online play generally adds a recurring cost. Microsoft’s cited backward-compatibility page states that online console multiplayer requires a Game Pass subscription, sold separately. Sony’s cited US direct listing says a paid PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online multiplayer.
Subscription names, tiers, prices, included games, trials, and exceptions can change by country and date. Compare the current tiers for your region and the games you actually intend to play, not an old catalog count or a historical price. Free-to-play games may have different online requirements, so verify the rule for each game.

What to compare in a subscription
- Whether the tier permits online console multiplayer.
- Whether the games you want are included or merely discounted.
- How long a game remains in the catalog.
- Whether cloud saves, trials, or other features matter to you.
- The annual and monthly cost in your country, including any introductory promotion that will later expire.
Neither source establishes that one service is categorically better. The practical winner is the service that covers your preferred games at a cost you would willingly pay after any promotion ends.

Price and value in 2026
Price is the least stable part of this comparison. A July 2026 TechRadar report said Microsoft would raise US console prices effective August 1, 2026, by $100 for 512 GB models and $150 for 1 TB models. Those are reported US-market changes, not a guarantee of today’s retailer checkout price and not figures that automatically apply in other countries.
The cited material does not establish a current US direct-store price for the PS5 Digital Edition. Therefore, do not publish or rely on an undated claim that Series S is the cheaper console. Compare the exact storage capacity, bundle contents, warranty, seller, shipping, and return policy for both consoles on the day you buy.
Calculate total first-year cost
Use the console price as only the first line of your budget. Add the subscription tier required for your multiplayer plans, any extra storage you expect to need, and the games you will purchase outside a catalog. A lower checkout price can disappear if the configuration has less storage or if you immediately need an expansion card.

Choose PS5 Digital Edition when PlayStation is already your home
It is the straightforward choice when your owned digital games, friends, trophies, or preferred franchises are on PlayStation. PS4 backward compatibility and Game Boost for selected titles can make the transition more useful than starting a new library elsewhere. Confirm the exact PS5 model and 825 GB capacity shown in the listing you are considering.
Choose Series S when Xbox services are the priority
Series S makes sense when you specifically want Xbox’s account ecosystem, Xbox One compatibility, selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games, and Game Pass. It is also the natural fit for a buyer whose display and expectations align with a 1440p-oriented console and who accepts that it is the lower-spec Xbox model.
Choose neither until you check your physical collection
If much of your library is on discs, a disc-free console may create replacement costs. Count those games before deciding. You may need to repurchase digital editions, and compatibility varies by title and region.

Be cautious with a large 4K library
If your priority is extracting the highest image quality from a 4K display, do not base the decision on the Series S upscaling statement alone. Check current tests for the games you play and consider whether their performance modes meet your expectations. The available product pages do not provide a universal head-to-head benchmark.
A pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the exact SKU. Record Series S capacity (512 GB or 1 TB) or the PS5 Digital Edition model and listed capacity.
- Audit your games. Separate digital purchases, discs, backward-compatible titles, and games you still need to buy.
- Check your display. Note its resolution, refresh rate, and supported input features.
- Price the recurring plan. Confirm the current Game Pass or PlayStation Plus tier required for your online games in your country.
- Budget storage. Decide whether the internal capacity is sufficient and, for Xbox, whether an expansion card is worthwhile.
- Verify the listing. Check seller, stock, bundle contents, warranty, return terms, and final checkout total.
- Recheck volatile details. Prices and subscription catalogs can change; use the live listing and current platform pages immediately before ordering.
Common mistakes to avoid
Calling Series S “the cheap PS5 alternative”
That framing hides the performance-tier difference and may be wrong after a price change. Compare the console you can actually buy, at its current price, with the games and display you own.

Comparing storage numbers without naming the model
“Series S storage” is ambiguous because Microsoft lists both 512 GB and 1 TB versions. “PS5 Digital” is also not a sufficient identifier when the product family has multiple configurations. Put the capacity and model in your notes and receipt.
Assuming every backward-compatible game works
Xbox support covers selected Xbox 360 and Original Xbox titles, not every release. PS5 supports PS4 games with Game Boost on selected titles, not a universal enhancement. Check individual games.
Planning multiplayer around an expired promotion
Use the regular subscription price and current tier rules in your budget. Introductory offers can change and may not apply to an existing account.
The practical answer
Buy the PS5 Digital Edition when PlayStation continuity is the deciding factor. Buy Xbox Series S when Xbox’s library and subscription ecosystem are the reason you are shopping, and the exact Series S model offers acceptable storage and value at today’s price. If neither platform has your must-play games, pause and compare the current listings rather than choosing by an old reputation for being cheaper.
