Yes, you can play games remotely from an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One on a compatible phone, tablet, PC, TV, or VR headset. Remote Play streams a game that is installed on your own console. Your Xbox renders the game and sends the video and audio to the remote screen while your controller inputs travel back to the console.
You need remote features enabled on the console, a Microsoft account with an Xbox profile, a supported client device, a compatible controller where required, and a suitable network connection. Xbox states a requirement of 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data with 10 Mbps download speed. That figure is a published requirement, not a promise of smooth play in every home or mobile network.
What Xbox Remote Play actually does
Remote Play is a direct connection to your Xbox console. The game remains installed on and runs on the Xbox in your home; the remote device acts as a screen and input endpoint. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation states: "With Xbox Remote Play, your game runs on the user’s Xbox console."

This is different from Xbox Cloud Gaming or other Xbox Game Streaming services. Cloud streaming runs the game on Microsoft’s Xbox servers in an Azure datacenter. Remote Play uses your own console as the host, so the titles available remotely are the games installed on that console and playable by the account connecting to it.

Microsoft describes Remote Play as playing games installed on your console, including titles in the Xbox Game Pass library, on compatible smart TVs, Meta Quest headsets, PCs, smartphones, and tablets. The exact experience depends on the client device, controller support, network conditions, and the game’s own requirements.
Which consoles and screens support Remote Play?
Host consoles
Xbox’s current Remote Play information lists Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles as hosts. Remote features must be enabled on the console, and it must be connected to the internet. The published information does not establish that every hardware revision, regional configuration, or accessory works identically, so check the current Xbox guidance if your setup is unusual.
Phones and tablets
Xbox lists compatible Android and iOS phones and tablets. Its published minimum operating systems are Android 6.0 or later and iOS 15.1 or later. A supported Bluetooth controller is required for playing over the internet from supported Android and iOS phones or tablets. A touch screen alone should not be assumed to provide controls for every console game.

Windows PCs
Windows 10 and Windows 11 version 22H2 or later are listed among the supported operating systems. Xbox’s retrieved information does not specify a complete browser-version matrix, so an up-to-date supported browser or Xbox client is the sensible starting point. If a particular PC cannot connect, verify that its operating-system version and browser or app are current before troubleshooting the console.
Smart TVs and VR headsets
Xbox names compatible smart TVs and Meta Quest headsets in its device list. It does not publish a complete model-by-model compatibility table in the cited information. Consequently, a TV or headset should be treated as supported only when its current Xbox app or browser guidance explicitly lists it. Screen size does not determine compatibility; the platform, software version, account sign-in, and controller path do.
Requirements checklist
- Console: Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One with remote features enabled and an internet connection.
- Client: A compatible Android or iOS phone/tablet, Windows 10/11 PC (22H2 or later), compatible smart TV, or compatible VR headset.
- Operating system: Android 6.0+, iOS 15.1+, or Windows 10/11 version 22H2+ where applicable.
- Account: A Microsoft account with an Xbox profile.
- Network: Xbox states "5Ghz Wi-Fi or mobile data connection 10Mbps down." This is a download-speed requirement; Xbox does not publish a Remote Play-specific minimum upload speed or latency figure in the cited material.
- Controller: A supported Bluetooth controller for supported Android and iOS phone or tablet play. Confirm the controller’s compatibility with the specific device before buying an accessory.
- Game access: The game must be installed on the console and playable by the signed-in account. Some games and online multiplayer may require Xbox Game Pass, sold separately.
The 10 Mbps figure should not be interpreted as a quality guarantee. Actual playability also depends on latency, interference, congestion, the console’s connection, and the client’s connection. Microsoft’s published requirement does not promise a particular resolution, frame rate, or response time.

Does Remote Play require Xbox Game Pass?
No universal Remote Play subscription fee is stated. Remote Play is a way to connect to your own console, and Xbox says that some games and online multiplayer may require Xbox Game Pass, sold separately. Apply that caveat to the particular game or multiplayer feature that requires it, not to every Remote Play session.
For example, a locally installed game that your account can launch can be played remotely without treating Game Pass as an automatic entry requirement. If the title’s license, online multiplayer mode, or catalog availability is tied to a Game Pass plan, that separate requirement still applies when you play remotely.
Does Xbox Remote Play use mobile data?
Yes. Xbox explicitly lists mobile data as an option alongside 5 GHz Wi-Fi and warns that mobile-data charges may apply. Remote Play sends a continuous game stream, so it can consume a meaningful portion of a cellular allowance, but the cited Xbox material does not provide a fixed gigabytes-per-hour figure.

How to avoid an unexpected phone bill
- Check your carrier’s remaining data allowance and any tethering or streaming limits before starting.
- Use a trusted 5 GHz Wi-Fi network when one is available and stable.
- Disable cellular data for the Remote Play app or browser, if your phone’s operating-system settings provide that per-app control.
- Watch your device’s data-usage meter during a short test session rather than assuming the 10 Mbps requirement equals a specific monthly data amount.
- Remember that 10 Mbps describes connection speed, not the amount of data the session will consume.
Xbox does not publish a Remote Play-specific traffic profile in the cited information, so an exact data-cost estimate would depend on factors that are not stated, including stream behavior and session length.
How to prepare a console and client
The following sequence uses only requirements that Xbox publishes; menu labels can change between console software releases.
- On the Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One you intend to use, enable its remote features and leave the console connected to the internet.
- Install pending console, operating-system, and client-app updates. The client must meet the listed operating-system minimum: Android 6.0+, iOS 15.1+, or Windows 10/11 version 22H2+.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that has the relevant Xbox profile and game access.
- On an Android or iOS phone or tablet, pair a supported Bluetooth controller. A controller is specifically required for supported phone and tablet play over the internet.
- Connect the client through stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data that meets Xbox’s stated 10 Mbps download requirement.
- Start Remote Play from the current Xbox-supported app, browser, TV, or headset interface and select the prepared console. If the device is not listed as compatible by Xbox, do not assume that a similar model will work.
An older Xbox One support article contains console-specific connection instructions. Those instructions should not be presented as universal steps for current Xbox Series X|S consoles; the current device guidance is the appropriate reference for a mixed-generation setup.

Choosing a client device
| Client | What to verify | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Android phone or tablet | Android 6.0 or later, Xbox compatibility, and Bluetooth-controller support | Portable and convenient, but the smaller screen can make text-heavy games harder to read. |
| iPhone or iPad | iOS 15.1 or later, Xbox compatibility, and a supported Bluetooth controller | Portable with a familiar mobile interface; controller pairing and battery life matter. |
| Windows PC | Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later plus a supported Xbox app or browser path | Larger screen and flexible wired or wireless controller options, but portability depends on the computer. |
| Smart TV | Whether the exact TV model and software are listed as compatible by Xbox | Large-screen play without a separate monitor; model-level support is not fully specified in the cited Xbox page. |
| Meta Quest headset | Whether the exact headset and current Xbox-supported software are compatible | Immersive private display; headset, controller, and network support must all align. |
Xbox’s available information is not detailed enough to rank individual phone, TV, or headset models. Screen size, refresh-rate claims, and accessory designs cannot substitute for the platform’s compatibility requirements.
Remote Play data collection and privacy
Microsoft’s Data collection summary for Xbox, published in October 2025, applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. It divides personal-data processing into Required and Optional categories and says customers can change privacy settings to customize optional data sharing. Microsoft’s wording is: "Required data in the Required category is necessary to keep our products safe, secure, up to date, and performing as expected."
Examples Microsoft gives for required diagnostic data
- Device connectivity and configuration details.
- Networking and hardware settings.
- Internet-connection diagnostics.
- Sign-in success and failure data.
- Console health and performance information.
- Software setup and inventory.
The summary also describes required service data processed when customers use Xbox network-connected experiences, with examples such as account and profile details and information needed to deliver services.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What this does and does not establish about Remote Play
These are Microsoft’s general Xbox console and network categories, not a separate itemized Remote Play telemetry report. The summary does not identify every field collected during a Remote Play session, prove that every optional category is generated by Remote Play, or state a Remote Play-specific retention period. It would therefore be inaccurate to promise a precise list of Remote Play data or to claim that a particular telemetry field is always collected during streaming.
For privacy decisions, review the current Xbox privacy settings on the console and Microsoft’s complete data summary. Changing optional-data settings does not remove the connectivity, sign-in, security, and service information Microsoft identifies as required for Xbox network experiences.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The console does not appear
- Confirm that the host is an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One with remote features enabled.
- Check that the console is online and that the client is signed in with the Microsoft account linked to its Xbox profile.
- Verify that the client operating system meets the published minimum.
- Check the current Xbox compatibility guidance for the exact TV, headset, phone, or tablet model.
The connection starts but play is unstable
- Move the client to a less congested 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection when possible.
- Confirm that the available download speed meets the stated 10 Mbps requirement; meeting it alone does not guarantee low latency or smooth video.
- Test the console’s internet connection separately from the client’s connection.
- If using mobile data, compare performance and cost against Wi-Fi and check for carrier throttling or data limits.
Controls do not work on a phone or tablet
- Use a supported Bluetooth controller, as Xbox specifically requires one for supported Android and iOS phone or tablet play over the internet.
- Confirm that the controller is paired to the intended device rather than another nearby phone, PC, or console.
- Check the controller’s current compatibility information for the phone or tablet model.
A game will not launch
- Confirm that the title is installed on the host console and that the signed-in account can play it.
- Check whether that game or its online multiplayer mode requires Xbox Game Pass, sold separately.
- Do not substitute cloud-streaming availability for local installation: Remote Play uses the console’s installed games.
What Xbox has not specified
The cited Xbox information does not provide exact browser versions, a complete current TV or headset model list, minimum upload speed, a latency threshold, guaranteed stream quality, or a Remote Play-only data inventory. Those details can change with software and device updates. Use the current Xbox compatibility and privacy pages for a particular model or account configuration instead of relying on an unofficial compatibility assumption.
