There is no single console generation that plays every older digital game. Compatibility depends on the specific title, its original platform, the hardware you own, and how you access it. Xbox supports selected games from earlier Xbox generations; PS5 supports PS4 games; and Nintendo Switch systems use curated classic-game libraries rather than native compatibility with earlier Nintendo platforms. Check the exact game in the current official catalog before buying hardware or a subscription.

How to understand game compatibility

“Backward compatible” means a newer system can run certain games made for an older one. It does not mean every game from every previous generation works. The available route also matters: you might play a title through backward compatibility, a re-release, a remake, or a subscription library. Those options may offer different versions and do not automatically transfer an existing digital license.

Which platforms play older games?

Platform What older games are available What to verify
Xbox One and current Xbox consoles Selected original Xbox and Xbox 360 games are supported. Xbox directs players to its title catalog; some games have enhanced rendering features. Xbox backward compatibility catalog Look up the exact title and check the supported console and any title-specific conditions. Do not assume all games from those generations are included.
Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite These systems do not natively support games from previous Nintendo platforms. Nintendo Switch Online offers selected classic libraries, including NES, Game Boy, and SNES, with additional libraries described in Nintendo support information. Nintendo Switch backward compatibility FAQ Nintendo Switch Online Check whether the game is in the subscription catalog for your region and whether your membership provides access. A classic-library subscription is not the same as using old game media directly.
PlayStation 5 Sony describes PS4 games running on PS5 through backward compatibility, including cross-generation multiplayer for the same supported PS4 game. Sony’s PS5 backward compatibility information Confirm the specific game with Sony. This PS4-to-PS5 compatibility information does not establish that every older PlayStation generation works.
PC and compatible handhelds Xbox announced a PC backward-compatibility program on July 22, 2026, offering selected classic Xbox games for purchase and through Game Pass plans on PC and compatible handhelds. Xbox Wire announcement The program is selection-based. Check the live listing for the game, device, and access method.

Digital ownership is not the same as compatibility

A digital purchase, a disc, a newly sold re-release, and access through a subscription are separate ways to play. A platform’s compatibility catalog can establish whether a particular game runs on particular hardware; it does not establish that every digital license transfers to a new console or that a disc, subscription, or re-release is interchangeable with the version you own. Check the platform’s current information for the title, account, edition, and region before spending money.

Check these details before buying

  1. Identify the exact game and original platform. Similar titles can have different releases for different consoles or generations.
  2. Find the title in the platform’s official catalog or support information. A general statement about backward compatibility is not enough to confirm a specific game.
  3. Confirm how you own or plan to access it. Check whether your digital license is recognized, whether the physical disc is supported, or whether you need to buy a re-release or subscribe.
  4. Check region and account availability. Catalogs, membership access, and title availability can depend on your region and account.
  5. Confirm the required hardware and access conditions. Check the supported console or handheld and whether an online connection or active membership is needed.
  6. Make sure it is the version you want. A port, remake, emulated release, and original version may differ, even when they share a title.

What about emulators and ROMs?

Emulation and downloading game files raise legal questions that depend on the jurisdiction and circumstances. Nintendo’s policy FAQ addresses unauthorized copies and circumvention in Nintendo’s context; it should not be treated as a ruling on every country’s law or every personal-use situation. How to get a definite answer for one game

Start with the game title, its original console or platform, your current hardware, and whether you own a digital copy or disc. Then check the relevant official title listing and regional availability. Without those details, no particular console generation can be recommended reliably.
