Xbox Play Anywhere is a title-specific digital entitlement. When a supported game is bought digitally through the Xbox Store or Windows Store, the same purchase can be installed and played on an Xbox console, a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, and a supported Windows 11 gaming handheld at no additional charge. Sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that owns the game, and supported saves, add-ons and achievements follow that account.
It does not make every Xbox game a PC game, does not make disc purchases eligible, and does not permit the same game session to run simultaneously on multiple devices. The badge on the individual store listing is the deciding check.
How does XBOX Play Anywhere work?
Xbox Play Anywhere is attached to an individual game license rather than to the entire Xbox library. You buy one eligible digital copy, then use that entitlement on the supported versions of the game for Xbox console, Windows PC and supported Windows 11 handhelds. Xbox describes the idea with the phrase “Buy once, play anywhere.” That is a description of the license, not a promise that every title or every device qualifies.

The purchase must be made digitally through the Xbox Store or Windows Store, or supplied as a digital code from a participating retailer. After you sign in with the account that owns the game, the title is available through the normal Xbox and Windows game libraries. The game still has to provide a compatible console, PC or handheld build; Play Anywhere does not create a PC version where the publisher has not supplied one.

Xbox reported that more than 1,000 games supported Play Anywhere in an Xbox Wire update dated August 28, 2025. That figure reflected the catalog and additions reported at that time, including games added in July 2025; it is a dated count, not a current total.
Does XBOX Play Anywhere cost extra?
No. For a game carrying the Xbox Play Anywhere badge, one eligible digital purchase covers the supported Xbox console, Windows PC and supported Windows 11 handheld versions. You do not buy a second copy solely to move from console to PC.
The entitlement does not eliminate the game’s normal purchase price, optional add-ons, internet service, storage needs or PC hardware requirements. The sources for Play Anywhere establish the cross-device license, not a universal price, subscription requirement or performance level for each game. Check the current store listing for the game’s price and edition, and check the publisher’s current PC requirements before installing on a computer.
How do I know if a game is XBOX Play Anywhere?
Check the specific product listing before you buy:
- Open the game’s listing in the Xbox Store or Windows Store.
- Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge among the game’s platform and feature information.
- If the badge is not obvious, consult the official Xbox Play Anywhere catalog and then recheck the live store listing at purchase time.
- Confirm that the edition you intend to buy is the digital edition associated with the badge.
Catalog membership can change as games are added or listings are updated. A game’s appearance on Xbox, its inclusion in a subscription, or the fact that it has a Windows version is not by itself proof of Play Anywhere eligibility. The badge on the individual title is the reliable decision point.
What you need before installing
- A Microsoft/Xbox account that owns the eligible digital game.
- An Xbox console for the console installation, or a Windows 10/11 PC for the PC installation.
- The Xbox app on Windows, with the app and Windows updates current.
- A supported Windows 11 gaming handheld if you want the handheld installation.
- Enough local storage and hardware capable of running that game’s PC build. Play Anywhere does not set one universal specification; use the game’s current PC requirements.
The same account is central to the entitlement. Buying on one account and signing into the Xbox app with another account will not make the second account the owner of the Play Anywhere license.

How to install and start a Play Anywhere game
On an Xbox console
- Sign in to the console with the Microsoft/Xbox account that bought the digital Play Anywhere game.
- Open My Games & Apps.
- Select Ready to Install.
- Find the supported game and start the installation.
- Launch it after installation and use the same account that owns the purchase.
A supported title should appear in Ready to Install even when you originally bought it through the Windows Store, because the entitlement is shared across the participating Xbox and Windows versions.
On a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC
- Install or open the Xbox app for Windows.
- Sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that owns the game.
- Open My Library.
- Select the Play Anywhere title and choose the install option.
- Start the game from the Xbox app or its installed shortcut, remaining signed in to the owning account.
Xbox’s setup guidance calls for current Windows and Xbox app updates. If the title is absent from My Library, verify the account first, then confirm that the live store listing still carries the Play Anywhere badge and that you bought a qualifying digital edition.

- Use a handheld running the supported Windows 11 environment.
- Open the Xbox app and sign in with the account that owns the game.
- Go to My Library.
- Install the supported title and launch it from the app or the installed game shortcut.
“Supported handheld” is a specific qualification. Xbox’s Play Anywhere FAQ refers to Windows 11 gaming handhelds; it does not state that every handheld, SteamOS device or other operating system receives the entitlement.
Can I be signed into the same game on my XBOX console, Windows 10/11 PC or supported gaming handheld device?
Not simultaneously for the same game. Xbox states that you cannot be signed into the same game on a console, PC and/or supported handheld at the same time. Play Anywhere is designed for moving your session between devices, not for running one shared game session on several screens.
You can finish on one device and later continue on another after signing in with the owning account. If another device is still running the game, close that session before starting the same title elsewhere. This one-device rule applies to the game session; it does not turn the purchase into separate platform licenses for concurrent use.

Will my game progress be saved on my XBOX console, Windows 10/11 PCs or supported gaming handheld device?
Yes, Xbox says supported Play Anywhere saves, add-ons and achievements carry across the participating devices when you use the same Microsoft/Xbox account. Start on the console, install the PC version from My Library, and the account-associated progress can follow you to the PC or supported handheld.

Achievements are one shared set for the game, not a second platform-specific set that is duplicated when you change devices. The feature therefore suits a player who alternates between a television, a computer and a Windows handheld while keeping one continuing profile.
Cross-device entitlement does not guarantee identical graphics settings, frame rate or input behavior. Those depend on the particular game’s PC build and the hardware running it. The Play Anywhere promise concerns ownership and supported account data, not uniform performance.
Will downloadable content for games that are XBOX Play Anywhere also be playable on an XBOX console, Windows 10/11 PC or a supported gaming handheld device?
Xbox says bought or earned downloadable content for a Play Anywhere game works across the supported devices. That includes add-ons, Season Pass content, consumables and in-game unlocks tied to the eligible game and account.
The practical requirement is that you use the same owning account and install a supported version of the same title. DLC that belongs to a different game, a different account or an edition outside the Play Anywhere listing is not converted by the feature. Check the edition details in the store when an add-on has multiple versions.

Are games that are XBOX Play Anywhere digital only or also disc games?
Play Anywhere is digital-only. A physical disc purchase does not provide the Play Anywhere entitlement, even when the same title has an Xbox console version and a Windows version. A qualifying digital code from a participating retailer can count because it redeems as a digital purchase; a disc remains a disc license.

Which gaming handhelds support XBOX Play Anywhere games?
The Play Anywhere FAQ specifies supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds. That wording matters: the entitlement is tied to the Windows version and Xbox app experience described by Xbox, not to a generic “handheld” category.
Before buying for a handheld, confirm that the device runs a supported Windows 11 configuration, can install and run the Xbox app, and meets the game’s own PC requirements. The available evidence does not establish Play Anywhere support for SteamOS or another non-Windows operating system, so do not treat a handheld’s ability to run other PC games as proof that it qualifies here.
Play Anywhere compared with other ways to obtain a game
Use the following decision framework when you are choosing how to buy a title:
- You want one purchase across console and Windows: choose the eligible digital listing that displays the Play Anywhere badge.
- You already have a disc: do not assume it unlocks the PC or handheld version; the physical purchase is excluded from Play Anywhere.
- You see a Windows version but no badge: treat the console and PC listings as separate unless the store explicitly identifies the title as Play Anywhere.
- You need two people to play the same game at once: Play Anywhere is not the solution for simultaneous sessions on one account; Xbox’s rule allows one active sign-in to that game at a time.
- You want to stream instead of install: do not conflate cloud gaming with Play Anywhere. The Play Anywhere guidance describes downloading and installing an owned, supported game; cloud streaming is a separate Xbox offering with its own access conditions.

Troubleshooting when a game is missing
The game is not in Ready to Install on console
- Sign out and back in with the account that purchased the digital game.
- Check the current listing for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge.
- Confirm that the purchase was digital, not a physical disc.
- Install current console updates and check Ready to Install again.
The game is not in My Library on PC or handheld
- Open the Xbox app and verify the signed-in Microsoft/Xbox account.
- Confirm that the device is a Windows 10/11 PC or a supported Windows 11 handheld.
- Update Windows and the Xbox app, then reopen My Library.
- Recheck the title’s live listing and edition; a Windows version without the Play Anywhere badge does not establish shared ownership.
Progress or DLC appears absent
- Close the game on the first device before launching it on another, because simultaneous sessions are not supported.
- Use the same owning account on every device.
- Verify that the add-on belongs to the same supported game and edition.
- Allow the game to finish its normal account synchronization before switching devices again.
These checks address entitlement and app access. They cannot fix a PC that fails the individual game’s hardware requirements; for that, use the current requirements published for that title.

Optional PC controls and accessories
Play Anywhere does not require a particular controller. Xbox’s PC guidance says players can connect accessories such as a controller, mouse or keyboard. Choose the input method that suits the game’s design and your desk or handheld setup. A controller can be useful for games designed around console controls, while mouse and keyboard may suit genres that rely on precise pointing or extensive shortcuts.
An accessory changes how you control the PC version; it does not change eligibility, ownership, cross-save behavior or the one-device rule.
Play Anywhere and cloud gaming are different
Play Anywhere is an ownership entitlement for supported digital games that Xbox describes in terms of installing the game on participating devices. Cloud gaming is a separate way of accessing games through streaming and can have separate subscription, network and device conditions. You do not need cloud streaming to use a Play Anywhere purchase, and having cloud access does not make a non-Play-Anywhere title eligible for the shared digital license.

- Confirm that your planned purchase is digital or a qualifying digital code, not a disc.

When those conditions line up, Play Anywhere delivers the practical benefit it promises: one supported digital game license, one continuing account, and a way to move between Xbox and compatible Windows hardware without buying another copy for each supported platform.
