Xbox Play Anywhere lets you buy an eligible digital game once and play it on supported Xbox consoles, Windows 10 or Windows 11 PCs, and supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds without paying a separate Play Anywhere fee. Your Xbox account carries compatible saves, add-ons and achievements between those devices. The entitlement is tied to the individual game, not to every Xbox title, and it does not apply to disc purchases.
Before buying, look for the current Xbox Play Anywhere badge in the Xbox or Windows store listing. Catalog membership can change, so an old list of participating games is not a substitute for checking the live product page.
What Xbox Play Anywhere actually includes
Play Anywhere is a digital entitlement attached to selected games. When you purchase an eligible title digitally through Xbox or a participating retailer’s digital-code program, the same Xbox account can access that title on supported Xbox and Windows devices. You do not buy a separate console license and PC license for that eligible purchase.

The entitlement is not a subscription and does not turn every game in your library into a cross-platform title. Each publisher and title must participate. A game can be available on both Xbox and Windows yet still require separate purchases if it does not carry the Play Anywhere badge.

Xbox describes the feature as applying only to digital games. Its official FAQ states: “Xbox Play Anywhere only applies to digital games.” A disc can install or play on a compatible Xbox console, but inserting that disc does not grant a Windows PC copy through Play Anywhere.
What one eligible purchase covers
- Access to the eligible game on supported Xbox consoles.
- Access to the Windows version on supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 PCs.
- Access on supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds, subject to the device and game’s normal requirements.
- Cloud-synchronised progress associated with the Xbox account.
- Compatible add-ons, Season Pass content, consumables and in-game unlocks for the Play Anywhere game.
- One shared achievement and Gamerscore record rather than separate device-specific totals.
How cross-buy works
“Cross-buy” is a convenient description for the included entitlement: an eligible digital purchase unlocks the supported Xbox and Windows versions. It does not mean that every version of every Xbox game is bundled, nor does it include a disc license.
Digital purchase from Xbox
Buy the title while signed in to the Microsoft/Xbox account that will play it. On another supported device, sign in to that same account and open your owned games or the store listing. The Play Anywhere version should appear as available to install rather than asking you to buy it again.
Digital code from a participating retailer
Xbox says participating retailers may sell digital codes for Play Anywhere games. Redeem the code to the Xbox account you intend to use, then verify that the game’s store page shows the Play Anywhere entitlement and the expected platforms. Retailer stock, regional restrictions and code terms can vary, so a code should not be assumed to qualify merely because it is labelled for Xbox.
What does not qualify
- A physical disc purchase. Xbox’s official wording makes Play Anywhere digital-only.
- A non-participating game that happens to have both Xbox and Windows editions.
- A purchase or code redeemed to a different account from the one used on the second device.
- A Windows version obtained through a separate storefront when the title’s entitlement does not cover that storefront.
For a particular game, the badge and the current regional listing are the authoritative checks. Do not rely on a screenshot, an old article or a game appearing in a historical list.
How cross-save and shared game state work
Cross-save means that progress follows your Xbox account. Start a supported game on an Xbox console, then sign in to the same account on the Windows version and continue from the synchronised save. The reverse works as well: progress made on a supported PC or handheld can be picked up on the console.

Xbox also says Play Anywhere supports saves, add-ons, Season Passes, consumables and in-game unlocks for games the player owns. Availability of particular content can still depend on the game’s design, region and platform requirements. A title’s own terms may distinguish between transferable content and items that are platform-specific, so check its listing when a purchase includes substantial downloadable content.
Achievements and Gamerscore
Play Anywhere uses one account-level achievement set. Xbox says: “A single shared set of Gamerscore and Achievements will be earned and awarded for Xbox Play Anywhere games.” An achievement earned on PC is therefore part of the same record viewed on Xbox, rather than a second copy that must be unlocked again.
What cross-save does not mean
Cross-save is not a promise that two people can use one purchase at the same time. It synchronises one player’s account state; it does not create extra licenses or separate simultaneous sessions.
Supported devices and the handheld boundary
Xbox names three broad device categories: Xbox consoles, Windows 10/11 PCs and supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds. The handheld wording matters. It is a platform category, not a guarantee that every portable PC, older Windows device or non-Windows handheld is supported.
Xbox consoles
Use the Xbox account that owns the digital entitlement. The console must support the game itself, including any generation, storage and system-version requirements shown on the listing.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs are included in Xbox’s platform description. The game still needs a compatible processor, graphics hardware, memory, storage and operating-system build. Play Anywhere removes the second purchase; it does not remove those technical requirements.

Windows 11 gaming handhelds
Xbox’s FAQ identifies Windows 11 gaming handhelds as supported. Xbox features the ROG Xbox Ally X on its page as an example, but that example should not be treated as a model-by-model compatibility list. Confirm that a specific handheld runs supported Windows 11 software and that the game listing recognizes the device’s platform and controls.
A handheld is optional. You can use Play Anywhere with only an Xbox console, only a Windows PC, or both. A controller may improve play on a PC or handheld, but buying one is not a Play Anywhere requirement.
How to check a game before buying
- Open the live Xbox or Windows store listing. Search for the exact edition you plan to purchase, not just the franchise or a bundle name.
- Find the Xbox Play Anywhere badge. The badge is the title-level indication that the digital entitlement covers the supported Xbox and Windows versions.
- Confirm the platforms. Check whether the listing names the Xbox generation, Windows 10/11 PC support and any relevant handheld information.
- Check the purchase format. Make sure you are buying a digital game or an eligible digital code. A physical-disc listing is not covered.
- Review add-ons and editions. If you are buying a Deluxe edition, Season Pass or consumables, confirm what is included and whether the content is supported on the devices you will use.
- Check the account and region. Redeem or buy on the Xbox account that will play the game, and verify that the regional store terms apply to you.
- Install on the second device. Sign in with the owning account and look in the library or store listing. It should offer installation rather than a second purchase when the entitlement is recognized.

Can you play on two devices at once?
There is a session limit. The same game cannot be signed into simultaneously on an Xbox console, a Windows PC and a supported handheld under one Play Anywhere entitlement. The feature is designed for moving one player’s experience between devices, not for turning one purchase into a two-player or family-sharing license.

If another person needs to play at the same time, they need an arrangement that provides a separate license and complies with Xbox account and sharing rules. Do not interpret a successful installation on several devices as permission for concurrent sessions.

The official Xbox Play Anywhere catalog currently lists participating titles and includes examples such as Forza Horizon 6. A catalog is a live commercial listing, however: games can be added, removed, delisted, reissued in a different edition or made unavailable in a particular region. Use the current catalog and the badge on the individual product page when making a purchase decision.
The presence of a title in an older article does not prove that a newly released edition, bundle or disc version has the same entitlement. Compare the exact edition and purchase format you intend to buy.

Troubleshooting a missing Play Anywhere entitlement
The second device asks you to buy the game
- Sign out and back in with the account that purchased or redeemed the game.
- Open the order history or owned-games library to confirm the transaction completed on that account.
- Search for the exact title and edition, then look for the Play Anywhere badge.
- Check whether you bought a disc, a code for a different region or an edition without the entitlement.
- Install pending Xbox, Microsoft Store and Windows updates, then restart the device before trying again.
The save is not current
- Reconnect the original device to the internet and allow the game to finish saving and synchronising.
- Close the game normally rather than powering off during a save operation.
- On the second device, use the same Xbox account and wait for the synchronisation prompt to complete.
- Do not overwrite a newer cloud save with an older local save unless you are certain which progress you want to keep.
Add-ons or Season Pass content is missing
Verify that the add-on was purchased on the owning account and that the game edition and region match. Some content is delivered inside the game, while other content requires a separate download or an in-game redemption. Play Anywhere supports compatible add-ons, but it does not change a publisher’s content rules.

Confirm that the handheld is running a supported Windows 11 configuration, that you are signed into the owning account and that the title’s current listing includes the relevant Windows platform. Xbox’s handheld category does not establish compatibility for every model.
Common misconceptions
“Every Xbox game is cross-buy.”
No. Play Anywhere eligibility belongs to each title. A game can have an Xbox release and a Windows release without bundling them.
“My disc should unlock the PC version.”
No. Xbox explicitly limits Play Anywhere to digital games. A disc purchase is not the cross-buy entitlement.
“Cross-save means my friend can use my copy.”
No. Saves follow the purchasing player’s account, and the same game cannot be signed in simultaneously across the listed device categories under one entitlement.

Buying checklist
- Is the exact game edition marked with the Play Anywhere badge?
- Am I buying a digital version or an eligible digital code rather than a disc?
- Will I use the same Xbox account on every device?
- Does my PC or Windows 11 handheld meet the game’s technical requirements?
- Are the add-ons, Season Pass and consumables included in the edition I selected?
- Have I checked the current regional listing instead of relying on an old catalog?
- Do I understand that one entitlement is not permission for simultaneous sessions?
When all of these checks pass, Play Anywhere provides the practical benefit it promises: one eligible digital purchase, one shared account progression, and supported versions across Xbox, Windows PC and qualifying Windows 11 handhelds.
