HDMI OUT is the port that sends your Xbox One’s game video and audio to a television or AV receiver. HDMI IN receives the HDMI output of another device, such as a cable or satellite set-top box, so that source can pass through the console. For ordinary gaming, connect the Xbox HDMI OUT to an HDMI input on your TV. Use HDMI IN only when you deliberately want to route an external HDMI source through the Xbox.
HDMI IN and HDMI OUT at a glance
The two ports look similar, but they have opposite signal directions. The labels describe what the Xbox does with the signal, not what your television expects to see.
| Port on Xbox One | Signal direction | Typical device connected | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI OUT | Leaves the Xbox | TV HDMI input or AV receiver HDMI input | Sends Xbox games, apps, menus, video and sound to the display system |
| HDMI IN | Enters the Xbox | HDMI output from a cable or satellite set-top box, or another compatible HDMI source | Accepts an outside source so it can be routed through the Xbox to the display path |
These ports are not interchangeable. Plugging the television into HDMI IN reverses the intended direction, so the TV will not receive the console’s picture through that connection.

HDMI OUT is the console’s normal video-and-audio connection. It carries the Xbox interface, games, streaming apps and system sounds toward a display device. The display can be a television, or an AV receiver that then sends the signal to a television.

Direct connection to a TV
- Insert one end of an HDMI cable into the Xbox One port labeled HDMI OUT.
- Insert the other end into any available HDMI input on the television.
- Turn on the TV and select the exact HDMI input used by the cable, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
- Turn on the Xbox and wait for its dashboard or startup screen to appear.
The cable must run from an output on the console to an input on the TV. A TV’s HDMI ports are inputs because the TV receives picture and sound; the Xbox’s HDMI OUT is an output because the console sends them.
Connection through an AV receiver
If your home-theater receiver handles switching or audio, the documented chain is:
- Xbox One HDMI OUT to an HDMI input on the AV receiver.
- AV receiver HDMI OUT to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Select the receiver input assigned to the Xbox, then select the TV input connected to the receiver’s output.
In this arrangement, the receiver sits between the console and the display. The Xbox still uses HDMI OUT; the receiver’s HDMI input is the point that receives the console’s signal.
What the Xbox One HDMI IN port does
HDMI IN is for an external HDMI source. Microsoft’s Xbox Support home-theater directions describe connecting a set-top box’s HDMI output to the Xbox One HDMI input, then connecting the Xbox One HDMI output onward to the A/V system. The Xbox therefore acts as a pass-through point in the signal chain rather than as the source of that television channel.
Typical set-top-box arrangement
- Connect the cable or satellite box’s HDMI OUT to the Xbox One’s HDMI IN.
- Connect the Xbox One’s HDMI OUT to the TV’s HDMI input, or to an AV receiver input if your receiver is in the chain.
- Select the TV or receiver input connected to the Xbox.
- Use the set-top box as the source for its channels and programming.
The external box is upstream: it creates the video and audio, the Xbox HDMI IN receives that signal, and the Xbox HDMI OUT sends the resulting path to the display. This is why the source box must never be connected to the Xbox HDMI OUT when you intend to use the console’s input.

What pass-through does and does not mean
Pass-through means the external source travels through the Xbox’s HDMI path to the receiver or television. It does not turn HDMI IN into another console output, add a second HDMI output, or make the Xbox a replacement for the cable provider’s box. The source device remains responsible for its own channel selection and content.
Which Xbox port goes to the TV?
Use HDMI OUT. This is the answer for a normal Xbox One, Xbox One S or Xbox One X gaming setup. Connect HDMI OUT directly to a TV HDMI input unless an AV receiver is intentionally being used between them.
Do not choose HDMI IN because it is physically convenient or because its label is easier to see. HDMI IN expects another device to send a signal into the Xbox; it is not designed to send the Xbox dashboard to the television.
Can you connect a cable box to an Xbox One?
Yes. Connect the cable box’s HDMI output to the Xbox HDMI IN, then connect Xbox HDMI OUT to the display path. This is the specific topology documented by Xbox Support for a set-top box and home-theater setup.
Whether the complete chain works at a particular resolution depends on every device in that chain: the set-top box, Xbox model, receiver or switch, HDMI cables and television. If the goal is simply to watch or record the box’s output, verify that the source is actually producing an HDMI signal and that the downstream display path accepts it.

4K, HDR and HDCP limitations
Do not assume that every Xbox One HDMI IN arrangement supports every 4K or HDR format. Xbox Wire’s guidance for Xbox One S and Xbox One X says that equipment used in a 4K Ultra HD pass-through path must support 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2. A receiver or other intermediary that lacks those capabilities can prevent a 4K signal from reaching the TV, even when the console and television each support 4K independently.
Recommended Free Tools
Use direct connection as the 4K baseline
For troubleshooting a 4K setup, connect the Xbox directly to a 4K television first. This removes the receiver or external pass-through device from the signal path and establishes whether the console, cable and TV can negotiate the desired format. Xbox Wire recommends this direct-to-TV approach for the best results with Xbox One S and Xbox One X.
Check the whole signal path
- Confirm that the television input is a 4K-capable HDMI input, if the TV distinguishes between inputs.
- Confirm that any AV receiver, switch or other pass-through equipment supports 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2.
- Check the HDMI cable and replace it if it is damaged, unusually long or unable to maintain a stable high-bandwidth connection.
- Test the Xbox HDMI OUT directly to the TV before reintroducing the receiver or set-top box.
The 4K qualification is model- and equipment-specific. It should not be read as a guarantee that every Xbox One variant, every HDMI IN use or every older receiver can pass 4K.
What HDMI cable do you need?
A standard HDMI cable is the physical connection used for both described routes: Xbox HDMI OUT to a TV or receiver, and an external source HDMI OUT to Xbox HDMI IN. Xbox Wire states that Xbox One consoles shipped with a High Speed HDMI cable. If the original cable is usable and long enough, no special replacement is required merely because you are identifying the two ports.
You may need an additional or replacement HDMI cable when you are adding a set-top box, routing through a receiver, extending the distance or replacing a damaged cable. The cable cannot correct a signal-direction mistake: an intact cable in HDMI IN still will not send the Xbox to the TV.

Troubleshooting: no Xbox picture on the TV
When the TV shows “No signal” or a blank screen, work from the console outward. The most common error is using HDMI IN for the TV connection.
1. Verify the port on the console
Look at the label beside the cable on the rear of the Xbox. For a direct TV connection, it must be in HDMI OUT. Move the cable if it is plugged into HDMI IN.
2. Verify the TV input selection
Follow the cable to the television and note the input number. Use the TV remote’s input/source control to select that exact HDMI input. If the cable is in TV HDMI 2 while the screen is set to HDMI 1, the Xbox can be working normally while the TV displays nothing.
3. Remove intermediate equipment
If the Xbox runs through a receiver, switch or other device, temporarily connect Xbox HDMI OUT directly to the TV. A direct picture identifies the intermediary as the likely source of the problem and also provides the recommended baseline for 4K troubleshooting.

- Unplug and firmly reseat both HDMI ends.
- Try another HDMI input on the TV, then select that input.
- Try another known-good HDMI cable.
- Power off the TV, receiver and Xbox, reconnect the intended chain, then power them on again.
5. If a set-top box is in the chain
Confirm the set-top box is connected from its HDMI OUT to the Xbox HDMI IN. Then confirm the Xbox HDMI OUT continues to the TV or receiver. A box connected to the Xbox HDMI OUT creates two outputs competing in the wrong direction and will not provide the intended pass-through route.

Troubleshooting: the Xbox picture works but 4K does not
A working 1080p picture does not prove that an entire path can carry 4K. Check the receiver or other pass-through equipment for 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2 support, then test the Xbox directly on the 4K TV. If direct connection works but the receiver path does not, the intermediary’s capabilities, configuration or cable connection need attention.
Keep the external set-top box out of the path while diagnosing the console. Add one device at a time: first Xbox to TV, then Xbox to receiver to TV, and finally the set-top box to Xbox HDMI IN. This isolates the point at which the signal stops.
Common connection mistakes
| Mistake | Why it fails | Correct fix |
|---|---|---|
| TV connected to Xbox HDMI IN | HDMI IN receives an upstream source; it does not send the console’s video out. | Move the TV cable to Xbox HDMI OUT. |
| Xbox connected to a TV input but the wrong TV source selected | The TV is listening to a different HDMI socket. | Select the numbered HDMI input used by the cable. |
| Set-top box connected to Xbox HDMI OUT | The set-top box must provide its signal to the console’s input. | Connect set-top-box HDMI OUT to Xbox HDMI IN. |
| Receiver inserted into a 4K path without checking specifications | An intermediary lacking 4K UHD or HDCP 2.2 can block or downgrade the signal. | Check every device or connect the Xbox directly to the 4K TV. |
| Assuming a new cable fixes reversed ports | Cables do not change signal direction. | Correct the port topology first, then test the cable. |

Use Xbox HDMI OUT to a receiver HDMI IN, then receiver HDMI OUT to the TV. Select the receiver’s Xbox input and the TV input connected to the receiver.
Xbox, cable box and TV
Use cable-box HDMI OUT to Xbox HDMI IN, then Xbox HDMI OUT to the TV. The cable box is the upstream source; the Xbox is the pass-through point.
Xbox, cable box, receiver and 4K TV
Build the same source-to-display chain, but verify that the receiver and every other intermediary support 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2. If the path is unreliable, connect the Xbox directly to the 4K TV first and add devices back individually.
What the documentation establishes
Xbox Support’s June 8, 2015 home-theater directions state that the set-top box HDMI output connects to the Xbox One HDMI input and the Xbox One HDMI output connects to the A/V HDMI input. Those directions establish the signal topology, not necessarily the exact wording of every current Xbox menu.
