Buy the Xbox Nano Controller if you want Microsoft’s smallest, rechargeable Xbox pad and your games support the connection method available on your device. It connects to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One through Xbox Wireless, and to compatible Windows, iOS, Android, tablet and smart-TV devices over Bluetooth. The important catch is easy to miss: Microsoft requires a USB-C charging cable, but sells that cable separately. Check compatibility, cable availability, hand fit and regional price before ordering.
What the Xbox Nano Controller is
The XBOX Nano Controller is Microsoft’s compact, pocketable controller for casual play, family gaming, travel and people who find a standard Xbox controller too large. Xbox describes it as “Our smallest controller, for big adventures.” Its smaller shell is intended to reduce the reach required for common controls, but that does not guarantee a comfortable fit for every adult or child. Hand size, finger reach and preferred grip still matter.
This is the official Xbox product, not the similarly named PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller. The two products target a similar need—compact controls—but differ substantially in power and connection: the Xbox model is rechargeable and wireless-capable, while the PowerA model is a wired controller.

Compatibility depends on both the device and whether the particular game accepts a controller. Microsoft’s listed platforms are:

“Compatible” does not mean every title will respond to the controller. A game may require controller support on that platform, may expose only limited controls, or may be designed around touch and keyboard input. Check the game’s system requirements or controller-support note before assuming it will work.
Xbox console connection
For Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, the documented console connection is Xbox Wireless rather than ordinary Bluetooth pairing. Use the console’s normal controller-pairing process and follow the on-screen prompts. If you are buying for a console in a child’s room or for travel, confirm that the console model is one of the supported Xbox generations before checkout.
PC, phone and TV connection
Bluetooth is the relevant connection for listed Windows, Android, iOS and compatible smart-TV devices. The host must have Bluetooth enabled, and the game or service must recognize a Bluetooth gamepad. Bluetooth pairing alone does not guarantee that a game will map every button correctly. Cloud-gaming apps can also impose their own supported-device lists.
Battery, charging and what is in the box
The official Xbox Nano has an internal rechargeable battery. Xbox Wire’s announcement, published October 14, 2026, describes the controller as including “a rechargeable battery and a programmable Action Button.” Microsoft’s product information says a USB-C cable is required for charging and is sold separately.

That cable requirement should be part of your purchase decision, not an afterthought. Before ordering, check whether you already have a suitable USB-C cable at the place where you will charge the controller. If not, add one or budget for it. The available information does not establish a battery-runtime figure, so do not buy it on the assumption that it will last a particular number of hours per charge.

Retail listings can change what is bundled by region or promotion. At checkout, verify the exact “in the box” list rather than relying on a product photograph. A retailer may show a cable in an image even when the standard package excludes it.
Controls and the programmable Action Button
The standout control feature is a programmable Action Button. Xbox Wire says it can be customized for shortcuts such as screenshots and gameplay capture. That can be useful when you want to save a clip without reaching for a keyboard or navigating a console menu.
Programming options and the setup path should be confirmed in the current Xbox software or product instructions for your platform. Do not assume that every shortcut available on Xbox is exposed in every phone, PC game or smart-TV app. The Action Button is a convenience feature; it does not by itself add compatibility to a game that does not support controllers.

Is the smaller shape right for you?
A compact controller can be a better match for children, travelers and adults with smaller hands. Shorter reaches may make shoulder buttons, face buttons and both sticks easier to operate without stretching. Pocketability also makes it practical as a spare controller for visits or trips.
There are trade-offs. A smaller body can feel cramped for large hands, and the reduced spacing may not suit players who use a wide grip or spend long sessions on games requiring frequent stick and trigger movements. No published hands-on measurements or independent ergonomic test are established here, so treat the size claim as positioning rather than a promise of universal comfort.
Questions to ask about fit
- Can your index fingers rest on the triggers without curling tightly?
- Can you reach the face buttons and both sticks without shifting your palms?
- Will a child using it be able to press the bumpers and triggers reliably?
- Do you prefer a compact travel pad, or the fuller support of a standard-size controller?
If possible, buy from a seller with a clear return policy. Comfort is personal, and a compact controller that feels ideal to one player can feel restrictive to another.
Xbox Nano versus PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller
PowerA’s Nano Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S is a separate third-party product. It is described as smaller and lighter and can be tested or calibrated with the free PowerA Gamer HQ App on Xbox or Windows 10/11 PC. Its manual specifies a detachable 10-foot USB cable. The manual also documents a one-year warranty for purchases in Australia or New Zealand, so that warranty statement should not be generalized to other regions.

Choose the Xbox Nano when wireless play, a built-in rechargeable battery or use across Xbox and Bluetooth devices matters more than having a cable permanently attached. Choose the PowerA option when a wired connection, a long detachable lead or app-based testing and calibration is the priority. Neither product is automatically better: the right choice depends on whether you value freedom from a cable or predictable wired operation.
Price, stock and regional checks
Price and availability are time- and region-sensitive. The Microsoft Store carries the exact XBOX Nano Controller product, but a listing can change by country, date, color and promotional period. Before paying, check:
- Current local price: confirm the currency and whether tax or delivery is included.
- Stock status: make sure “available” means deliverable to your address, not merely listed in a catalog.
- Color and model: verify that the product name is the official XBOX Nano Controller, not the separate PowerA Nano.
- Included items: look specifically for a USB-C charging cable; Microsoft’s product information says it is sold separately.
- Returns: check the return window and whether opened accessories or used controllers are excluded.
- Warranty: read the terms for your country. Do not apply the Australia/New Zealand PowerA warranty statement to another market.
The historical PowerA figure of about $39.99 is useful only as context. It is not a current quote, and it should not be used to estimate the present price of either controller.

- You understand whether the connection is Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth or wired USB.
- You have a suitable USB-C charging cable for the official Xbox Nano.
- The compact grip suits the intended player’s hand size and play style.
- You have checked current local stock, currency, delivery, returns and warranty.
- You are comparing the official Xbox model with the correct PowerA wired model, not assuming their features are interchangeable.
Common problems and practical fixes
The controller pairs but the game does nothing
Confirm that the game supports controllers on the specific platform you are using. Then verify that the controller is connected through the method expected by that platform: Xbox Wireless on Xbox consoles or Bluetooth on listed mobile and PC devices. A successful Bluetooth pairing screen does not prove that the game has enabled controller input.

You cannot charge it after opening the box
Check the package contents and obtain a suitable USB-C cable. Microsoft identifies the cable as sold separately, so its absence is expected rather than evidence of a defective battery.
You want wireless play on a device that only offers USB
Check the device’s supported connection methods before buying. The Xbox Nano’s listed Bluetooth support applies to compatible Windows, tablet, iOS, Android and smart-TV devices; it does not turn every USB-only host into a wireless-compatible system.
The controller feels too small
Use the seller’s return policy if the grip does not suit the player. Compact dimensions are an intended feature, not an adjustable setting, and there is no universal hand-size threshold that guarantees comfort.

Pause before buying if you need a cable in the box, require a published battery-runtime figure, have large hands, or play on a device whose game support is uncertain. In those cases, confirm the missing detail with the retailer or game maker first, or consider whether a wired compact controller better matches your setup.
