Short answer: The Xbox Nano Controller uses a built-in rechargeable battery. Charging requires a USB-C cable, and Microsoft says that cable is sold separately. Microsoft’s reviewed product pages do not publish a battery-capacity figure, a charge-time estimate, or a fixed runtime in hours. That means you can identify the correct charging connector and plan for a separate cable, but you should not rely on an advertised number of gaming hours unless the final manual or retailer listing provides one. The same documentation does not explicitly confirm whether the battery charges while you play, so treat simultaneous charging and gameplay as unverified until the manual confirms it.
What the Xbox Nano battery specification actually says
The controller has an internal, rechargeable battery. In normal operation, that means there is no AA-cell compartment to open and no routine battery swap. The battery is part of the controller rather than a user-installed pack.

Consequently, claims such as “the Nano lasts eight hours” or “a full charge takes two hours” cannot be attributed to those official pages. Runtime can differ from one session to another depending on what is connected and how the controller is used. A headset, for example, is specifically named by Microsoft as a factor; additional accessories and general usage are named as well.

The absence of a number is not evidence of poor endurance. It simply means the official material does not establish a single figure that applies to every setup. If runtime is a purchase-critical requirement, look for a later manual or the exact retailer listing for the edition you intend to buy.
Which cable charges the Xbox Nano Controller?
The charging connector is USB-C. Microsoft’s product specification says the controller requires a USB-C cable for charging and that the cable is sold separately. The Store listing makes the same point. Plan to obtain a cable independently rather than assuming one is in the box.
“USB-C” identifies the connector shape, not every electrical or data characteristic of a cable. The official pages reviewed do not state a required charging wattage, cable length, USB data standard, or whether a particular cable construction is mandatory. They also do not identify a supplied adapter or charger. Do not infer any of those details from the connector name alone.

- Check the cable’s listing for its stated charging and data capabilities if you also intend to use a wired connection.
- Use a cable long enough to reach your console, computer or power source without putting strain on the connector.
- Keep the product description or manual for the exact controller edition available, because Microsoft’s reviewed pages do not specify length, wattage or data requirements.
The defensible description when searching for the accessory is “USB-C charging cable for Xbox Nano Controller.” Avoid promises that a particular cable will increase runtime, shorten charging time or work in every wired mode unless the cable’s own listing and the controller manual establish those points.
How to charge it
Because the battery is internal, charging is a cable-based process rather than a battery replacement. The physical sequence is straightforward, but the official listings do not document indicator lights, a completion tone or an exact charging duration.
- Get a USB-C cable. It is a required, separately sold accessory according to Microsoft.
- Locate the controller’s USB-C port. Make sure the plug is oriented correctly and is free of visible debris.
- Connect the cable to the controller. Connect the other end to a compatible powered USB source appropriate for the controller and the cable’s specifications.
- Leave the controller connected for the charging period specified by the final manual, if one is provided. The reviewed listings do not supply a time estimate, so do not use an invented timer.

Can you charge while playing?
The reviewed Xbox and Microsoft Store pages establish the USB-C charging requirement and list wireless connection methods, but they do not explicitly state that the controller can charge while you play. They also do not say that charging is disabled during gameplay.

USB-C can be used for a physical connection, yet that fact alone does not prove the battery is charging at the same time or that every console, PC and cable combination supports the same behavior. Treat “charge while playing” as an unanswered compatibility question until the controller’s manual or the exact retailer documentation confirms it.
How to verify the behavior safely
- Find the charging and wired-use section in the manual for your exact Nano edition.
- Look for an explicit statement about simultaneous charging and gameplay, rather than relying on the presence of a USB-C socket.
- Check whether the documentation distinguishes a powered wired connection from battery charging.
- If no statement exists, contact the seller or manufacturer before making a purchase decision based on uninterrupted play.
When the cable is disconnected, the controller can use its supported wireless methods. The presence of wireless operation does not answer whether a connected cable replenishes the internal battery during a session.
Wireless and platform compatibility
Battery expectations depend partly on how the controller is connected. Microsoft lists Xbox Wireless for Xbox consoles and wireless Bluetooth connections for several other device categories. The documented platforms are:

The listings do not provide separate runtime figures for Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth or a physical USB connection. Do not turn the platform list into a battery benchmark: it establishes where the controller is designed to connect, not how many hours the battery will deliver in each mode.

Internal rechargeable battery versus replaceable batteries
An internal battery changes the ownership routine compared with a controller designed around replaceable cells. You do not normally remove a depleted pack and insert charged AAs; you connect the controller to USB-C instead. The cable is missing
That is consistent with Microsoft’s specification: the USB-C charging cable is sold separately. Confirm that the package contents for your specific retailer listing do not include one before assuming an item was omitted.
The plug does not fit
Verify that the controller end is USB-C. A different connector cannot satisfy the documented requirement. Do not force a plug into the port; use a correctly shaped cable and inspect both ends for damage.

The controller does not appear to charge
- Confirm that the cable is fully seated at the controller and power-source ends.
- Try a known-good USB-C cable whose connector fits correctly.
