Xbox Labs is a newly announced experimental group inside Xbox. CEO Asha Sharma says its small team of game makers, engineers and scientists will test emerging technology against real player and developer needs, including AI-assisted game creation, broader hardware access and ways to revive older games.
What Xbox Labs is
In an October 13, 2026 message to employees, Asha Sharma said she asked Scott to “stand-up XBOX LABS.” She described it as “a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists whose job is to turn emerging ideas into things our players and developers can experience.”
The group is intended to build prototypes in public, observe how people use them and judge success by whether more people are playing and creating. That makes Xbox Labs an experimental development unit, not a newly announced console, subscription or finished game.
Sharma’s wording also signals that Labs will work beyond internal demonstrations. Xbox says the tools it develops will be shared with developers across the industry, although the announcement does not identify a public Labs roster, release schedule or shipping product.

Why Xbox is testing this now
Xbox’s announcement argues that the roughly 75-year-old video-game medium is entering a period in which software no longer has to remain tied to the hardware for which it was first built.
It points to recent experiments that rapidly decompiled and rebuilt games for platforms they were never designed to support. The examples include translating Windows PC builds for Apple Silicon, running ports in browsers with WebAssembly and WebGPU, and remixing major games into another game’s source code. These examples are presented as evidence of changing technical possibilities, not as a promise that every Xbox title will immediately run everywhere.
WebGPU is described in the announcement as approaching 90% global browser support. If that level of adoption continues, browser-based graphics could become a more practical distribution route for some games, though performance, input support, licensing and server requirements would still vary by title.

Sharma compares that figure with an estimate of worldwide time spent writing code, saying Xbox play time is roughly five times larger. The argument is that the player audience is not merely consuming software: it represents a vast potential source of testing, feedback and creative participation.

How AI fits into the Labs plan
Xbox Labs builds on Microsoft’s earlier game-focused AI work rather than starting from a blank slate. Microsoft’s Muse project describes a world-and-human-action model, or WHAM, developed with Ninja Theory and trained on the multiplayer game Bleeding Edge.
Microsoft says Muse models game-world details, physics and responses to controller actions. The goal is consistent, varied AI-generated gameplay that can help researchers and developers explore ideas before committing to a full production.
Microsoft has made Muse model weights, sample data and an interactive interface available through Azure AI Foundry for other researchers and developers. The company identifies several possible uses:

- Prototyping gameplay systems and testing concepts more quickly.
- Creating new forms of content and participation for players and creators.
Twenty-seven game creators were interviewed in 2025 to help shape the Muse research. Microsoft Research says its Game Intelligence group now sits within People-Centric AI and works on interactive and generative experiences intended to empower players and creators. Microsoft Research also cites more than three billion players worldwide, placing these experiments in a global audience context.

None of this means Xbox is handing authorship of its games to an automatic system. Microsoft says creative leaders decide how generative AI is used on each project, and it frames the work around responsible-AI principles covering fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency and accountability.
What Xbox Labs could change
Access across hardware and browsers
Portable builds and browser delivery could reduce the hardware barrier for selected games. A game that can be adapted to Apple Silicon or rendered through WebAssembly and WebGPU could reach devices outside the platform for which it was originally made. The practical result would depend on the individual game’s code, graphics demands, controls, network design and rights agreements.
Preservation and revival
AI systems that understand game worlds and controller actions could help developers reconstruct, adapt or prototype experiences tied to obsolete hardware. Muse is explicitly positioned as useful for reviving older games, but Xbox has not announced which titles, if any, Xbox Labs will revive.

More people as creators and co-creators
Sharma says the initiative could let more people become creators or co-creators. That could mean new ways to modify worlds, generate content or influence play, but the announcement does not define a consumer-facing tool or a specific moderation model.

Faster developer experimentation
Shared tools and interactive AI models could let teams test mechanics, worlds and variations before building production-ready assets. Xbox says Labs will share what it creates with developers, while Muse already provides model resources and an interface through Azure AI Foundry.
Xbox Labs compared with conventional development
| Area | Conventional approach | Xbox Labs direction |
|---|---|---|
| Portability and access | Games are usually optimized for defined hardware and operating systems. | Experiments test translation to other chips, browsers and graphics environments. |
| Older games | Preservation often depends on original hardware, emulation or a deliberate remaster. | AI models and reconstruction techniques could help explore games connected to aging platforms. |
| Player participation | Players primarily experience content made by a development team. | Xbox is exploring broader player creation and co-creation. |
| Prototype speed | Teams build and test mechanics through conventional design, code and asset pipelines. | Models such as Muse can simulate game-world responses and support early experimentation. |
| Governance and authorship | Human teams control design, production and rights decisions. | Xbox says human creative leaders remain responsible while AI use follows responsible-AI principles and IP stewardship. |
What is not changing
Sharma presents Labs as an addition to Xbox’s existing strategy, not a replacement for it. “Our priorities aren’t changing,” she wrote. “We remain committed to the 4Cs, to making great games, to our hardware and to being responsible stewards of IP and the communities built around it.”
That means Xbox consoles and hardware remain among the company’s stated priorities even as Labs investigates play across more devices. It also means experiments must fit within Microsoft’s obligations to game creators, intellectual-property owners and player communities.

In an earlier CEO message, Sharma said Xbox would not “flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop.” Her stated position is that games remain human-crafted art, with innovative technology supporting rather than displacing creative judgment.

Who Asha Sharma is in this announcement
Microsoft announced Sharma as Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft Gaming on February 20, 2026. An editor’s note says the organization became known as XBOX on April 23, 2026, when her title became CEO XBOX.
Her initial leadership message set three commitments: great games, a return to core Xbox fans and players, and a future of play across devices. Xbox Labs directly connects to the third commitment while also testing how the first two can be supported by new technology.
What remains unknown
- The public announcement names Scott as the person Sharma asked to establish Labs but gives no broader team list.
- No Labs product, launch date or consumer sign-up has been announced.
- Xbox has not identified specific games that will be revived, browser-based or rebuilt for other hardware.
- Console pricing, stock, regional availability and any commercial developer program are not established by this announcement.
- Future AI tools will still need answers about copyright, consent, moderation, performance and support for each game or platform.
For now, Xbox Labs is best understood as a small, public-facing test group: a place where Xbox can turn advances in AI, portability and interactive technology into experiments, then decide which ideas genuinely improve play and game creation.
