If you are comparing the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally with the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X, the Ally X is the higher-spec choice: it has the stronger listed processor, more and faster memory, twice the storage, a larger battery, and a more versatile USB4 port. The standard Ally is the lower-tier option with the same 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display and the same Windows 11/Xbox-oriented software approach. Neither is a dedicated Xbox console; both are Windows 11 Home handheld PCs that can combine native PC games, Xbox services, cloud play, and Remote Play subject to game, membership, and regional support.

There is also a separate 2026 model called the ROG Xbox Ally X20. Do not confuse it with the 2025 Ally X when reading retailer listings.

What “Xbox handheld” means in this comparison

Microsoft’s 2025 announcement describes two handheld PCs developed with ASUS: the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. They run Windows 11 Home and start in an Xbox-focused full-screen interface rather than using the operating system of an Xbox console. The announcement describes the devices as combining Xbox features with Windows flexibility; Xbox gaming executive Roanne Sones wrote that “The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are two new handhelds crafted in collaboration with ASUS that combine the power of Xbox with the freedom you expect from Windows.” Read the official Xbox announcement for the manufacturer’s complete description.

That distinction affects every buying decision. You are choosing between two Windows handheld configurations, not between a small Xbox console and a PC. Your result depends on the exact game launcher, controller support, subscription, cloud availability, and region.

2025 ROG Xbox Ally vs. Ally X: specification table

The following figures are the published specifications in Xbox’s June 8, 2025 comparison. They are not independent benchmark results, and battery capacity is not a measured runtime.

What the Ally X hardware premium buys

Processor and memory headroom

The Ally X combines the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme designation with 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory, while the standard Ally uses Ryzen Z2 A and 16GB of LPDDR5X-6400. That gives the X a higher listed hardware tier and more memory headroom for demanding games, background Windows processes, and launchers running alongside a game. It does not, by itself, establish a universal frame-rate advantage: performance varies with game engine, resolution, graphics settings, power mode, drivers, and thermal conditions. No independent benchmark or game-by-game test is established here, so treat these as specification differences rather than promised results.

Storage for large PC games

The standard Ally’s 512GB SSD can fill quickly once Windows, launchers, updates, and several large games are installed. The Ally X starts with 1TB, which leaves more room before you need to uninstall titles. Xbox lists an upgradeable M.2 2280 SSD for both models. An upgrade is a hardware project, not an automatic increase in capacity; confirm the drive format, backup your data, and check the warranty and recovery procedure before opening a device.

Battery capacity versus actual runtime

The X’s larger battery can be valuable if you often play away from a charger, but watt-hours are only one part of runtime. Display brightness, frame-rate targets, game workload, power profile, wireless use, and background activity all change consumption. Neither Xbox’s comparison nor the cited product page provides a guaranteed play-time figure, so do not use the capacity difference as a promise of a particular number of hours.

Ports and external hardware

The standard Ally provides two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery 3.0. The Ally X adds one USB4 Type-C port with DisplayPort 2.1, Power Delivery 3.0, and Thunderbolt 4 compatibility, alongside a second USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port. If you connect a high-bandwidth dock, external display, fast storage, or several peripherals, check the dock’s required protocol and power budget against the exact port you intend to use. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee every display mode, data rate, or charging behavior. The Xbox announcement lists a charger and stand with the devices; it does not establish that a dock is included.

Weight and controls

Xbox lists the Ally at 670g and the Ally X at 715g. The 45g difference is a published mass difference, not a verdict about long-session comfort; hand size, grip, posture, and accessories matter. The models also use different trigger technologies: Hall Effect analog triggers on the Ally and Impulse triggers on the Ally X. Those labels describe the hardware, not a universal preference ranking.

Display: identical on the two 2025 models

Both 2025 devices are listed with a 7-inch 1080p IPS panel, 120Hz refresh rate, and 500-nit brightness. That means the screen is not the reason to pay for the Ally X. A 120Hz panel can display high-refresh output when a game and performance profile produce it, but it does not make every title run at 120 frames per second. Resolution, refresh rate, and brightness are maximum or design specifications; actual output depends on the game and system settings.

Windows, Xbox mode, and game access

How the interface works

The 2025 announcement says the handhelds boot into an Xbox full-screen experience optimized for handheld play. Xbox describes an aggregated library that can show Xbox titles, Game Pass content, Battle.net, and installed games from other leading PC storefronts. This is a navigation layer: it gathers entries from multiple places but does not mean every listed game is installed, licensed, controller-compatible, or guaranteed to perform well.

Native play, cloud play, and Remote Play

Xbox says players can play supported games natively on Windows, use Xbox Cloud Gaming, or use Remote Play from an Xbox console. Each route has different requirements. Native play needs a Windows-compatible installation and enough storage and performance. Cloud play needs a supported membership, network connection, and service availability in your region. Remote Play requires a configured Xbox console and a suitable network path. Verify the individual game and service terms rather than treating “Xbox” branding as a promise that every console title runs locally.

Software changes after launch

Xbox later described the aggregated library in an update about accessing the gaming library on Windows PCs and handhelds: Xbox’s library update. In April 2026, Xbox said the interface formerly called the full-screen experience would roll out as “Xbox mode” to Windows 11 PCs in select markets. The announcement describes a controller-optimized interface and aggregated library while retaining the Windows desktop; check the Xbox mode rollout details for current market coverage.

Availability is software-controlled and can change by market. A device purchased in one country may not receive exactly the same rollout timing, catalog, or service support as a device used elsewhere.

Backward compatibility is limited and evolving

In July 2026, Xbox announced an early-release backward-compatibility feature for PC, beginning with four original Xbox games on supported PCs and handhelds in supported regions. See the backward-compatibility announcement. This is an expanding catalog, not evidence that the entire historical Xbox console library runs natively on either handheld.

The separate 2026 ROG Xbox Ally X20

ASUS lists the ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) as a distinct product. Its US page lists $1,299.99, a 7.4-inch 1080p 120Hz OLED display, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, a 1TB SSD, and a microSD Express reader. Those specifications and price are not part of the 2025 Ally-versus-Ally-X comparison. Check the model year and exact product name in every listing; “Ally X” and “Ally X20” are not interchangeable. The X20 specification page also says specifications can change and products may not be available in all markets.

Price and availability: verify locally

The cited US listing for the 2025 Ally X showed $999.99 when checked October 13, 2026. A current official US price for the standard 2025 Ally was not verified in the available sources. The X20 page showed $1,299.99 at that same check. These are time-sensitive US catalog prices, not worldwide recommended prices, and they may change before you buy.

How to compare the two before ordering

  1. Identify the generation. Confirm that the listing says “ROG Xbox Ally (2025)” or “ROG Xbox Ally X (2025).” If it says “X20” or “2026,” move it to a separate comparison.
  2. Write down your actual games. For every title, mark whether you will install a Windows PC version, stream it through Xbox Cloud Gaming, use Remote Play, or use another PC launcher. Check controller support, anti-cheat behavior, storage requirements, and regional service availability.
  3. Compare today’s local prices. Use a live listing in your currency. Include tax, shipping, warranty, and return costs; do not rely on a stale MSRP or currency conversion.
  4. Choose the performance tier. If your priority is the higher listed processor tier and extra memory, the Ally X is the relevant model. If your games and settings fit the lower hardware tier and the price gap is decisive, the standard Ally may be sufficient. No published specification can replace testing the specific games you care about.
  5. Estimate storage honestly. Count the installed size of your current library plus update headroom. The X begins with more internal space, while both models list upgradeable M.2 2280 storage.
  6. Check how you will play away from power. Treat the X’s larger battery as additional capacity, not a guaranteed runtime. If you travel, also account for the charger and the charging limits of any power bank or dock.
  7. Map your ports. List your monitor, dock, USB storage, headset, keyboard, and other peripherals. Verify whether each requires USB4, Thunderbolt compatibility, a particular DisplayPort version, or a specific power delivery profile.
  8. Confirm the software rollout in your market. Xbox mode, aggregated-library behavior, cloud features, and backward-compatibility support can vary by region and change over time.
  9. Check the return path. A handheld PC can expose compatibility issues only after you install your own games. Make sure the seller’s return period and warranty cover the exact model and region.

Which model fits which buyer?

Choose the standard 2025 Ally when

  • You want the shared Windows 11 and Xbox-oriented interface but do not need the higher listed hardware tier.
  • Your planned library fits comfortably within the smaller starting SSD, or you already expect to upgrade it.
  • The local price difference is large enough that extra memory, battery capacity, and port bandwidth are not worth paying for your use.
  • You prefer the lighter published weight and the Hall Effect analog-trigger design.

Choose the 2025 Ally X when

  • You want the higher-tier processor and more memory for demanding Windows handheld workloads.
  • You regularly keep several large games installed and value the larger starting SSD.
  • You spend significant time away from outlets and prefer greater battery capacity, while accepting that runtime still depends on settings and workload.
  • Your dock or external-device setup benefits from USB4, DisplayPort 2.1, or Thunderbolt 4 compatibility.
  • You accept the higher price and slightly greater published weight.

Consider the X20 only when

  • You specifically want the separate 2026 generation and its listed OLED display.
  • You have verified the X20’s price, stock, warranty, and feature availability in your market.
  • You are not accidentally comparing its price or screen specification with a 2025 Ally X listing.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

Mistaking an Xbox interface for console compatibility

An Xbox-branded library screen does not turn every console game into a native Windows installation. Fix this by checking the game’s delivery method—native PC, cloud, or Remote Play—and the requirements for that method.

Assuming a bigger battery equals a fixed number of hours

Capacity is not runtime. Fix this by looking for testing of your specific games and power settings, and plan for charger access when the workload is demanding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying a dock by connector shape alone

Two USB-C ports can support different protocols. Fix this by matching the dock’s data, video, and power requirements to the exact port specification in the table.

Using an old listing without checking the year

“Ally X” can refer to the 2025 model, while “Ally X20” identifies the 2026 product. Fix this by checking the full model name, display type, memory, storage, and page date before paying.

Treating manufacturer specifications as benchmarks

The processor and memory names identify the hardware tier but do not predict a universal frame rate, noise level, temperature, or comfort result. Fix this by consulting independent testing for the exact game and configuration if those factors determine your purchase.

Bottom-line decision

For the 2025 generation, the standard ROG Xbox Ally is the sensible choice when you mainly want the Windows/Xbox handheld experience at the lower hardware tier and can live with its smaller starting storage and battery capacity. The ROG Xbox Ally X is the stronger specification choice when its extra memory, larger SSD, higher-tier processor, larger battery, and USB4-capable connectivity solve problems you actually have. The display is not a differentiator between them, and no published specification guarantees a particular game’s frame rate or battery life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before checkout, verify the local price, exact model year, game access method, regional services, and accessory compatibility. If the listing says X20, treat it as the separate 2026 product rather than an upgraded name for the 2025 Ally X.
