The right Xbox handheld option depends on where the game runs. Remote Play streams a game installed on your own Xbox console. Xbox Cloud Gaming streams supported titles from Microsoft’s cloud service. A Windows handheld such as the ROG Xbox Ally or ROG Xbox Ally X can run compatible PC games locally, while also offering those two streaming routes.

These are separate access paths, not interchangeable names for one library. A console game you own may be available through Remote Play but have no native Windows PC version, while a PC game installed on a handheld may not be available through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Use the decision framework below to match the hardware and subscription you actually need.

The three ways to play Xbox games on a handheld

Xbox Remote Play

Remote Play uses your Xbox console as the computer running the game. The handheld, phone, tablet or other supported receiving device displays the stream and sends your controls back to the console. ASUS describes the Ally use case as streaming games installed on an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, including Game Pass titles. The console must have its remote features enabled and be powered on or set to Sleep mode.

This means Remote Play is an extension of an Xbox you already own, not a replacement for it. Your console remains part of the setup, and the games available through this route are the games installed on that console under the conditions supported by Xbox.

Xbox Cloud Gaming

Cloud Gaming runs the game on Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure rather than on your personal console. The official product material cited for the Ally family says the feature requires a supported device and a Game Pass subscription. The exact subscription tier, catalog, supported countries and device list can change, so check the current Xbox terms for your region before subscribing.

Cloud Gaming is a streaming catalog, not an automatic copy of every game you own. A title must be supported for cloud play, and your account must meet the current plan and regional requirements. You do not need to describe Cloud Gaming as “your Xbox in the cloud”; that wording can imply access to a broader personal library than the service provides.

Windows handheld local play

A Windows gaming handheld installs and runs compatible PC games on its own hardware. Microsoft and ASUS describe the ROG Xbox Ally family as Windows 11 handheld PCs that can play natively, use cloud gaming where available and connect to an Xbox console through Remote Play. Windows also provides access to PC storefronts and applications, so local play is a distinct benefit from Xbox streaming.

Native PC support is the dividing line. A console-only Xbox title does not become locally playable merely because the handheld has an Xbox-branded interface. You need a compatible Windows PC release, an installation source and hardware that meets the game’s requirements.

Which option fits your situation?

Reader question Remote Play Cloud Gaming Windows handheld local play
Is an Xbox console required? Yes. The console must be configured and available for the described console-streaming setup. No personal console requirement is identified in the cited product material; a supported device and subscription are required. No, when you are playing compatible PC games installed locally. An Xbox remains optional for the streaming features.
Where does the game run? On your Xbox console. On Microsoft’s cloud service. On the handheld for native PC games; streaming can also be used.
What library does it use? Games installed on your own console, as described by ASUS. Games currently supported for cloud play under your account and plan. Compatible Windows PC games and storefronts, plus any Xbox streaming paths you can use.
What should you verify first? Remote-feature settings, console state and setup compatibility. Current subscription tier, cloud catalog, country eligibility and device support. Exact handheld configuration, game compatibility, price and preferred storefronts.

Choose Remote Play when you already have an Xbox and mainly want another screen. Choose Cloud Gaming when you want streamed games without maintaining a personal console and the current catalog meets your needs. Choose a Windows handheld when installing PC games locally and using multiple PC storefronts matter more than having every console title available.

How to use Xbox Remote Play

What you need

  • An Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One with remote features enabled.
  • The console powered on or configured in Sleep mode for the Ally scenario described by ASUS.
  • A supported receiving device, such as a compatible Windows handheld, phone or tablet.
  • A game installed on the console and an account authorized to play it.
  • Controls that work with the receiving device. A phone or tablet may benefit from a compatible wireless controller, but the cited material does not establish one controller model as universally required.

Setup sequence

  1. On the Xbox console, open the system settings and enable the console’s remote features. The exact menu wording can change with Xbox software updates, so follow the current Xbox setup instructions for your model.
  2. Leave the console powered on or in Sleep mode rather than fully shut down if you want the Ally scenario described by ASUS to connect.
  3. On the receiving device, sign in with the Xbox account associated with the console and open the Xbox Remote Play entry.
  4. Select the console, complete the on-screen connection checks and start a game that is installed on it.
  5. If the stream is unstable, check the console and receiving device connections before changing game settings. No measured latency threshold or network-speed requirement is established here, so avoid treating any single speed number as a guarantee.

Remote Play should be evaluated as a two-device system. Buying a handheld does not remove the need to configure, power and maintain the Xbox that supplies the game.

How Xbox Cloud Gaming differs

What the service provides

Cloud Gaming removes the personal console from the game’s execution path. The supported device receives a video stream while controls travel to the service. For an Ally owner, this can be more convenient than waiting for a console to be available, but it still depends on the games Microsoft currently exposes for cloud play.

Checks to make before paying

  • Confirm that your current country or region supports the service.
  • Check which Game Pass tier currently includes Cloud Gaming; the cited material establishes a subscription requirement but does not establish one permanent tier for every market.
  • Search the current cloud catalog for the games you care about. Ownership, console installation and cloud eligibility are separate states.
  • Verify that your phone, tablet, browser or handheld is on the supported-device list at the time you use it.
  • Review account, age, controller and network requirements shown in the current Xbox guidance.

Because catalog and plan rules are volatile, a statement that “Game Pass includes every Xbox game in the cloud” would be inaccurate. Treat Cloud Gaming as access to a changing supported set.

What Windows handhelds add

ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X

The two Xbox-branded Windows handhelds named in the product material are the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. They are Windows 11 PCs developed with Xbox, rather than portable versions of an Xbox Series console. Their software can present Xbox-oriented features while retaining access to Windows applications and PC storefronts.

Microsoft’s Store listing identifies the Ally X memory configuration as 24GB LPDDR5X-8000. That is a product specification from a page crawled in October 2026, not an independent performance result or a comparison proving that the Ally X is faster in every game. The available material does not provide controlled battery tests, complete current specifications for both models, price/value analysis or a performance ranking.

Local PC play and storefront freedom

Windows lets you install supported games from the PC storefronts you use and run applications such as Discord. In a June 9, 2025 Windows Experience Blog statement, Roanne Sones, CVP Gaming Devices and Ecosystem at Xbox, said that Windows handhelds provide access to games unavailable elsewhere, favorite storefronts, apps such as Discord, Twitch viewing and mods. That is Microsoft product positioning, not an independent guarantee that every app, mod or game works on every model.

Before buying, separate three questions: does the game have a Windows PC version, will that version run acceptably on the chosen configuration, and do you want to install it locally rather than stream it? A “yes” to Xbox ownership does not answer any of those PC questions.

Compatibility indicators

Microsoft’s Handheld Compatibility Program describes a Windows Performance Fit indicator. The program was announced to launch alongside the Xbox Ally family and to be available on supported Windows 11 handhelds. Use the indicator as a way to inspect compatibility information, not as a promise of a particular frame rate or battery life. Rollout and supported-device coverage should be checked when you buy or install a game.

Practical buying and setup decisions

If you already own an Xbox

Start with Remote Play. It can extend the console’s installed games to a handheld or mobile device without buying a Windows gaming PC. A Windows handheld becomes worthwhile when you also want native PC games, PC storefronts or Windows applications. Cloud Gaming is an additional option, not a prerequisite for Remote Play.

If you do not own an Xbox console

Compare Cloud Gaming with a Windows handheld based on how much local installation you want. Cloud Gaming has the lower hardware commitment but depends on a supported subscription, catalog and device. A Windows handheld costs more hardware investment but can run compatible PC games locally and still offer cloud streaming. Neither path guarantees access to every console-only game.

If you want one device for PC and Xbox streaming

A Windows handheld is the only path in this comparison that combines local Windows PC installs with both Xbox streaming modes. Confirm the specific model, memory, storage, controls and game compatibility rather than assuming that the Xbox branding makes all console titles native.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Confusing Remote Play with Cloud Gaming: Remote Play needs your console; Cloud Gaming uses Microsoft’s service. Check which device is actually running the game.
  • Assuming ownership equals cloud access: A game in your console library or PC storefront is not automatically in the cloud catalog.
  • Calling a Windows handheld an Xbox console: The Ally family is Windows 11 PC hardware. Console and PC versions can have different availability and requirements.
  • Treating one specification as a performance verdict: The Ally X’s 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 memory is a published specification, not a measured ranking.
  • Ignoring changing service terms: Recheck subscription tier, country support, catalog, device eligibility, price and retailer stock immediately before purchase or publication.
  • Buying hardware for a streaming-only need: If your goal is simply to play an existing console in another room, a supported phone or tablet may be enough; a full Windows handheld is justified by local PC play or broader Windows use.

A simple decision framework

  1. Do you own an Xbox console with the games you want? If yes, test Remote Play first.
  2. Do you want to stream without maintaining a personal console? Check Cloud Gaming’s current plan, region, device support and catalog.
  3. Do you need local PC installs or multiple PC storefronts? Choose a Windows handheld and verify each game’s PC compatibility.
  4. Do you want all three capabilities? A Windows handheld can combine native PC play with Cloud Gaming and Remote Play, but it still does not make every console game a local PC title.

That sequence prevents the most expensive mismatch: buying a handheld for a console game that is neither available as a Windows PC release nor currently supported for cloud play, when Remote Play would have solved the actual problem.
