Xbox gift cards and Microsoft gift cards put value into the same Microsoft account balance. After redemption, the balance is not restricted to Xbox. It can pay for eligible purchases in Microsoft Store online, on Windows, and on Xbox, subject to the product and region rules that apply to the account. “Microsoft Store credit” is therefore a useful description of the balance, not a separate wallet that differs from an Xbox card.
The practical differences are the recipient’s account region, what they want to buy, subscription eligibility, balance limits, and whether the card’s currency matches the account. For ordinary, non-promotional funds, Microsoft says there is no expiration date or balance-keeping fee.

The direct answer
An Xbox gift card and a Microsoft gift card work the same way once redeemed. The card’s value is credited to the recipient’s Microsoft account, and that account balance can be used for eligible Microsoft Store purchases. The word “Xbox” on the card does not create an Xbox-only wallet, while “Microsoft Store credit” does not describe a separate type of money.
What the recipient can actually buy still depends on Microsoft’s eligibility rules and the account’s country or region. Games, some apps, movies, television shows, Xbox-related subscriptions, and—in most regions—eligible hardware and accessories can qualify. Microsoft 365 subscriptions do not qualify under the gift-card balance rules.

What “Microsoft Store credit” means
Microsoft account balance is the official concept behind both cards. A redeemed card increases that balance; checkout then draws from it when the item is eligible. People often call the result “Microsoft Store credit” because it is spent through Microsoft Store, but the funds belong to the Microsoft account rather than to a particular storefront device.
This distinction matters when someone is choosing a gift. If the recipient wants a PC game, an Xbox game, a film, or an eligible accessory, an Xbox-branded card and a Microsoft-branded card generally reach the same destination. The card branding is mainly a cue about the ecosystem the buyer has in mind, not a different post-redemption balance.
Xbox card and Microsoft card compared
| Question | How the two cards compare |
|---|---|
| Where the value goes | Both add the full redeemed value to the recipient’s Microsoft account balance. |
| Xbox-only spending? | No. Eligible Microsoft Store purchases can be made online, on Windows, or on Xbox. |
| Games, apps, films and TV | These categories can qualify when the specific product is offered as an eligible Microsoft Store purchase in the account’s region. |
| Hardware and accessories | Eligible Surface, Xbox and accessory purchases are available in most regions; Microsoft specifically excludes gift-card hardware purchases in Taiwan. |
| Subscriptions | Xbox-related subscriptions may be paid with account funds. Microsoft 365 subscriptions cannot. |
| Account ownership | The balance belongs to the Microsoft account where the code is redeemed. It cannot be transferred to another person or Microsoft account. |
| Region and currency | Currency denominations and redemption are tied to the relevant jurisdiction. The balance cannot be converted to another currency or moved between regions. |
| Expiration | Ordinary, non-promotional gift-card balance does not expire and has no balance-keeping fee. Promotional credit follows the promotion’s stated expiration terms. |
| Insufficient balance | Microsoft applies the account balance first and allows a registered alternate payment method to cover the remaining amount. |
How to redeem either card
The redemption decision is more important than the card label: use the Microsoft account that should own the funds, and check its region before confirming. A code redeemed to the wrong account is not a transferable balance.

- Confirm the destination account. Identify the Microsoft account the recipient uses for Microsoft Store and Xbox purchases. If several family members use different accounts, do not assume the funds can be moved later.
- Open Microsoft’s gift-card redemption flow. Sign in to that account and choose the option to redeem a gift card or code.
- Enter the code carefully. Submit the code in the redemption form and review the account information shown before accepting.
- Confirm the credit. After redemption, check the Microsoft account balance. The full eligible value should appear in that account’s funds.
- Shop from an eligible Microsoft Store listing. At checkout, the account balance is used for qualifying products and services. If the total exceeds the balance, keep a registered alternate payment method available for the difference.
Redeeming is effectively a one-account decision. Microsoft’s terms say account funds cannot be transferred to another person or Microsoft account, so entering a code while signed in to the wrong account can create a problem that changing devices will not solve.
What the balance can buy
Games and digital content
Microsoft lists games and other Microsoft Store content among the normal uses for account funds. Depending on the region and the individual listing, that can include Xbox games, PC games, some apps, movies, and television shows. Eligibility is attached to the product and account, not guaranteed solely by the card’s name.
Apps and software
Some apps and software sold through Microsoft Store can be paid for with the balance. A product may still have its own licensing, platform, or regional restrictions, so the checkout page is the final check for whether account funds are accepted.

Hardware and accessories
In most regions, Microsoft says account funds can buy eligible Surface products, Xbox hardware, and accessories. Taiwan is a stated exception for gift-card hardware purchases. If hardware is the intended gift, check the recipient’s store region and the current product eligibility before redeeming a large amount.

Gift-card funds cannot be exchanged for cash, gift certificates, or similar payment products, except where applicable law requires otherwise. The balance is also not a universal Microsoft-services wallet: Microsoft 365 subscriptions are excluded, even though Xbox-related subscriptions can qualify.
Subscriptions: the important exception
“Microsoft subscription” is too broad a description for this balance. Microsoft’s spending guidance limits gift-card subscription use to Xbox-related subscriptions. That means an account balance may be accepted for an eligible Xbox subscription, while a Microsoft 365 subscription cannot be paid from the same gift-card funds.
Do not infer eligibility from the fact that both products appear under a Microsoft account. Check the subscription type, region, and checkout options before buying a card specifically for recurring service. An Xbox card is not a workaround for the Microsoft 365 payment restriction.
Region, currency and transfer rules
The account region controls the practical result
Microsoft ties gift-card currency denominations to the jurisdiction for which they are issued. A card intended for one country may not redeem to an account registered in another country. The account balance also cannot be converted into a different currency.
For that reason, the safest gift is one that matches the recipient’s current Microsoft account region. Ask which country is set on the account rather than relying on the recipient’s physical location, travel plans, or the language shown on a device.

Changing region does not move the money
Microsoft recommends changing the store region only when moving for a long time, because products obtained in one region may not work in another. The account balance does not follow the user when the account region changes, and funds cannot be transferred between regions. A regional move is therefore not a way to convert an unused balance into another currency.
The balance cannot be shared or reassigned
Once redeemed, the funds are attached to the Microsoft account that accepted the code. Microsoft’s terms state that the balance is non-transferable to another person or Microsoft account. Family members can use a balance only through the account that owns it and within the purchasing arrangements supported by Microsoft.
Expiration, fees and promotional credit
Ordinary gift-card balance
Microsoft says the standard balance added by a gift card does not expire and does not incur a fee merely for remaining in the account. A recipient does not need to spend ordinary funds immediately to prevent a routine expiration.

Promotional balance is different
Promotional credit is governed by the terms of the promotion that supplied it. It can have an expiration date even though ordinary gift-card funds do not. Keep promotional and purchased funds conceptually separate when planning a later purchase, and read the offer’s conditions rather than assuming every dollar in the account has the same lifespan.
Balance limits vary by country
Microsoft’s limits page gives a general maximum balance of USD 1,000 or the local-currency equivalent, while also listing country-specific limits and additional rules. These are policy limits, not a guaranteed amount that every account can hold under every circumstance.
For example, Microsoft lists France with a EUR 150 limit in a 30-day period. That example illustrates why a large top-up should be checked against the current limit for the recipient’s country. Limits can change, and local rules may differ from the general USD figure.

If a planned gift would approach a regional limit, verify the current Microsoft account-balance limits page before purchasing or redeeming it. Splitting a purchase into several codes does not necessarily bypass an account or regional ceiling.
What happens when the balance is too small?
A partial balance does not automatically make a purchase impossible. Microsoft says checkout applies the Microsoft account balance first and then allows a different registered payment method to cover the shortfall.
For example, if an eligible item costs $60 and the account contains $40, the $40 balance is used first and the registered alternate method pays the remaining $20. The alternate method must be available to the account and accepted for that transaction; the gift card itself does not become cash or a transferable payment instrument.

Choose based on the recipient’s account, not the logo
If the recipient already uses a Microsoft account and you know the account region, either card can serve the same basic purpose. Choose the Xbox wording when you want the gift to signal Xbox gaming, or the Microsoft wording when the recipient may shop across Windows and Microsoft Store. The redeemed balance itself is not narrower because the card carries an Xbox label.
Check the intended purchase
Ask what the recipient plans to buy before selecting the amount. A game, eligible app, film, television show, or Xbox subscription may fit the balance rules. Microsoft 365 does not. Hardware may qualify in most regions but is excluded for gift-card purchases in Taiwan.
Confirm the country and currency
A card that looks correct in a retailer’s display can still be wrong for the recipient’s Microsoft account region. Match the card’s jurisdiction and currency to the account, especially when the recipient has recently moved or maintains accounts in more than one country.

Leave room for regional limits
For a large gift, compare the intended amount with the current account-balance limit for the recipient’s country. The general USD 1,000 figure is not a substitute for the local rule, and Microsoft publishes exceptions.
Troubleshooting common problems
The code was redeemed to the wrong account
Stop before making a purchase and verify which account received the credit. Microsoft’s non-transferability rule means the funds cannot simply be moved to a preferred account or given to another person. Contact Microsoft support if you need help identifying the account, but do not promise that support can transfer the balance.
The code will not redeem because of region or currency
Check the account’s registered country and the card’s issuing jurisdiction. Currency denominations are restricted to the relevant jurisdiction, and the balance cannot be converted after redemption. Changing the account region should not be treated as a solution because existing funds do not move between regions.

The desired item does not offer the balance as payment
Review the item category and the checkout method. Cash, gift certificates, and similar payment products are excluded. Microsoft 365 subscriptions are excluded even though eligible Xbox subscriptions may work. For apps, games, films, television shows, or hardware, eligibility can vary by the specific listing and region.
The purchase costs more than the balance
Ensure a registered alternate payment method is available. Microsoft applies the account balance first and uses that method for the remaining amount. If no acceptable alternate method is present, the transaction may fail even though the balance itself is valid.
Some credit is expiring
Determine whether the expiring amount is promotional. Ordinary gift-card balance has no expiration under Microsoft’s standard guidance, while promotional credit follows the promotion’s own deadline. Use the promotional terms to identify the applicable date.
Hardware is unavailable in the recipient’s region
Check whether the purchase is being made in Taiwan, where Microsoft specifically excludes gift-card hardware purchases. In other regions, hardware and accessories are generally subject to product and local eligibility rules rather than guaranteed for every item.

Buyer’s checklist
- Identify the Microsoft account that should own the funds.
- Match the card’s currency and jurisdiction to that account’s region.
- Confirm whether the intended purchase is an eligible Microsoft Store product.
- For subscriptions, verify that it is Xbox-related; Microsoft 365 is not eligible.
- For hardware, check the regional rule, including the Taiwan exclusion.
- For a large amount, review the current country-specific balance limit.
- Remember that redeemed funds cannot be transferred to another person, Microsoft account, or region.
- Keep an alternate registered payment method available if the purchase may exceed the balance.
- Distinguish ordinary non-expiring funds from promotional credit with a promotion-specific expiration date.
