Whether Xbox Game Pass is still worth paying for depends on more than how many games appear in its library. In Michael Crider’s August 18, 2026 PCWorld opinion feature, he argues that the service needs to improve on three fronts to remain appealing: accessibility, value, and novelty. Those are his recommendations, not announced Microsoft plans. For subscribers, they frame the practical questions: Can you play where you want? Does your plan justify its price? And does the catalog keep offering reasons to stay?
What does Xbox Game Pass need to get right?
Crider’s argument is that Game Pass must work for more people, feel like a fair deal, and keep delivering new reasons to subscribe. The three priorities are connected: a large catalog matters less if you cannot reliably play it, and access matters less if the plan costs more than the games you would otherwise buy.
His argument drew on a quick, informal poll of The Full Nerd live audience. In that poll, 18% said they were current subscribers, 27% former subscribers, 4% said they would subscribe if Game Pass came to Linux, and 51% said they were not subscribed. These figures describe that audience poll only; they are not a representative survey or an estimate of the wider gaming market. PCWorld’s feature presents the three priorities as Crider’s opinion.

Can you play Game Pass on a phone, TV, or while traveling?
Crider’s first priority is accessibility: make it easier to play on devices people already own and reduce how much the experience depends on a fast, stable connection. Cloud gaming can bring games to supported phones, tablets, TVs, and other devices without installing each game locally. But streaming depends on internet access, which can make it unreliable or impractical on transit, while traveling, or in homes with inconsistent service.

Xbox says cloud gaming requires a supported device, a compatible controller, and high-speed internet, and is available only in supported regions and on supported devices. Check Xbox’s cloud gaming information for compatibility and setup details. “Play anywhere” therefore has limits: the device, region, controller, and connection all matter.
Crider also suggests broader platform access, including Linux and Android, and more opportunities for local play. These are proposals, not confirmation that every Game Pass game works on those platforms or that Microsoft has announced such a change. Cloud streaming and local installation are different forms of access; a streaming service does not make a title natively playable on every device.

Is Game Pass still worth the price?
There is no universal break-even point. The useful comparison is the price of a plan against the games you actually expect to play, along with whether you use its platform access, day-one releases, and cloud allowance. A large headline catalog is not automatically good value if most of its games do not interest you or the plan includes benefits you will not use.
The current official US comparison lists these two console-oriented options. Prices and features can change, and Xbox says availability varies by plan, region, and platform.

These prices and plan details are from Xbox’s US plan comparison. PC Game Pass is a separate PC-only plan, and Xbox’s comparison says it does not include cloud gaming. Check the plan page for the current terms where you live before subscribing.
Crider’s value recommendation is to consider more modular choices and a lower-cost entry point for people who are curious but not ready for a broad bundle. That is his proposal, not a description of an existing new tier. For an individual decision, compare your likely play time and intended games with what those titles would cost to buy; the available information does not establish a single savings threshold that applies to everyone.

Do you need Ultimate for day-one games?
For the US plan comparison, Ultimate includes new games on day one. Premium does not promise that timing for new Xbox-published games; it lists those games as joining within 12 months of launch. The distinction matters if playing a new release immediately is a major reason you subscribe. Plan benefits and the games covered can change, so consult Xbox’s current comparison before choosing.
What is changing about Game Pass cloud hours?
Xbox announced that monthly cloud gaming limits would begin in November 2026: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. Microsoft said subscribers could buy additional hours, with pricing and further details to come in its announcement. Joe Skrebels, Xbox Wire Editor-in-Chief, wrote, “We expect this upcoming change to impact 4% of Game Pass subscribers.” That 4% is Microsoft’s estimate, not an independently measured finding. The limits make cloud playtime another factor in judging value, especially for people who stream most of their games. They are monthly allowances, not a claim that a game will stop being available in the catalog after a set date.
Will Game Pass keep getting new games?
Crider’s third priority is novelty. He argues that subscribers need both a dependable catalog and a regular flow of new releases; a service that feels static can lose its appeal even if its library is large. His suggested way to let lower tiers sample new releases—a 24-hour period to play them—is an idea, not a current Game Pass benefit.
For a subscriber, the practical question is whether new additions arrive at a pace and in genres that match their interests. A release schedule can make a bundle feel more useful, but it does not guarantee that any particular game will suit you or remain available indefinitely.

How to decide whether to keep your subscription
- List the games you intend to play. Separate titles you would buy regardless from games you would try only because they are included.
- Match the plan to your device. Check whether you need PC, console, or cloud access; PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming according to Xbox’s plan comparison.
- Check the benefits you will use. Compare the plan’s price, catalog, day-one access, and monthly cloud hours against your actual habits.
- Verify current terms in your region. Prices, features, game availability, and supported devices may differ or change over time.
