There is no single cheaper choice. Buying usually wins when your backlog is a short list of games you want to keep permanently. Game Pass can cost less when several of those games are included in the right catalog and you can finish them during a short, paid subscription period. The result depends on the titles, your platform and region, sale prices, plan benefits, and how many billed months you need.

Compare the current purchase prices of the exact games you intend to play with the Game Pass plan price multiplied by the months you need. Do not compare an assumed “average indie price” with a subscription: no official indie-game average or universal savings figure is established, and Game Pass catalog counts include many categories.

• Buying is usually better for a small, permanent backlog. You pay once and retain access under the purchase terms, with no recurring subscription charge.
• Game Pass can be cheaper for a concentrated playing period. If several wanted titles are included and you finish them within one or two billed months, the subscription may undercut buying each game.

How to calculate your personal break-even point

The comparison is straightforward once the inputs are verified:

Total purchase cost = the sum of the current prices of the specific backlog games you would buy.

Subscription cost = the monthly plan price multiplied by the number of billed months needed to play those games.

Step 1: Make a title-by-title backlog

1. Write down only the games you realistically expect to start and finish, not every game you might someday try.
2. Record the platform for each title: Xbox console, Windows PC, or another supported device. A console catalog match does not automatically establish a PC match.
3. Check the current Game Pass listing for each title and note the exact plan that includes it. Catalog membership can change.
4. Record the current Microsoft Store purchase price for each game. Use a legitimate sale price only if the sale is live when you are making the decision.
5. Estimate the time needed to play the list. Round up to the number of billing months you would actually need, including a month for unfinished games rather than assuming you can complete everything in a few days.

Step 2: Pick the correct plan

Start with catalog and platform eligibility, then compare prices. For a one-month decision, a plan is mathematically cheaper only when the qualifying games you would buy cost more than that plan’s one-month fee. For two months, the purchase total must exceed the two-month figure, and so on. This is a threshold, not a promise of value: it assumes every game is included, that you finish or substantially use the games during the paid period, and that you do not continue renewing.

Illustrative calculation, not an indie-price average

Suppose your verified backlog contains three games included in Premium, and their current individual prices total $36. If you can play them in one billed month, Premium costs $14.99 and is lower by $21.01 before assigning any value to other benefits. If the same list takes three billed months, Premium costs $44.97 and buying at $36 is lower by $8.97. The arithmetic changes as soon as a game leaves the catalog, a sale ends, or your completion estimate changes.

The Microsoft Store’s dynamic Game Pass-filtered listing contained 481 items when it was crawled about a month before October 13, 2026, and showed at least one separately listed game at $39.99. That listing spans categories and is not an indie-only sample, so it cannot establish a typical indie price or a representative saving.

Catalog checks matter more than the headline game count

“50+,” “200+,” “500+,” and “300+” describe the advertised size of the Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass catalogs at the cited US price check. They do not guarantee that a particular indie game is present, that it is present on your platform, or that it will remain available for your entire play period.

Verify these four details for every game

• Exact title and edition: similar editions or bundles can have different availability.
• Platform: confirm Xbox console versus PC support for your device.
• Tier: record whether the title is in Essential, Premium, Ultimate, or PC Game Pass.
• Timing: check the listing immediately before subscribing and again if you postpone playing.

Cloud gaming changes the calculation in November 2026

Team Xbox announced on September 3, 2026, that monthly cloud-gaming hour allocations are expected to begin in November 2026: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. Xbox said the change was expected to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers.
