Buy a game if you want dependable access to one particular title; use Game Pass if you value trying many games while they remain in the catalog. A Game Pass subscription does not give you a permanent purchase entitlement. Microsoft says that if your subscription ends or a game is removed from the catalog, you must reactivate the subscription or buy the game separately to continue using it. When a favorite is marked as leaving, compare its current store price, any member discount, and a compatible physical edition before deciding.
What you actually get with Game Pass
Game Pass provides subscription-based access to a changing library. You can install and play included games while your plan is active and while each title remains available in your market and on your supported platform. That access is conditional rather than ownership of every game in the catalog.
Microsoft Support’s digital-goods rules put the key condition plainly: “If your subscription terminates or a content item is removed from the catalog, you must reactivate your subscription or buy the content separately to continue using it.” The same rules point to additional Xbox One, Xbox Series, Play Anywhere, and Game Pass terms for details that can vary by product and platform.

- Your Game Pass plan expires, is canceled, or otherwise terminates.
- Microsoft removes the title from the Game Pass catalog even though your subscription continues.
In either case, the remedy Microsoft identifies is to renew the subscription or purchase the game separately. Downloading a title, earning achievements, or keeping it installed does not turn catalog access into a purchase license.

Should you buy a game before it leaves Game Pass?
Buying before the departure date is sensible when you expect to return to the game, want to finish it after the deadline, or do not want your decision tied to a future subscription. It is less compelling when you only planned a short playthrough and the purchase price is close to (or higher than) several months of subscription you would not otherwise pay for.
Use the leaving notice as a trigger to check, not as proof of delisting
Xbox’s library includes a “Leaving soon” category. A listing there indicates that Game Pass access is scheduled to end; it does not establish that the title has been removed from the Xbox store or every other authorized storefront. Open the game’s current store page in your own country and for your exact console or PC platform. Verify the scheduled removal date shown for your account rather than relying on an old article or a social-media post.
Check the price and the member offer on the same day
Xbox Wire’s September 16, 2025 announcement said members could purchase games leaving the library with a discount of up to 20%. “Up to” is a maximum, not a promise that every departing title receives 20 percent off. Eligibility, price, platform, account, currency, and market can change. Add the game to your cart while signed in and verify the actual price before paying.
Buy early enough to avoid a deadline problem
Do not wait until the final minutes of the removal date. Store prices, regional listings, payment authorization, and download availability can create delays. If you decide to purchase digitally, complete the transaction while the title is still visible in your account and keep the order confirmation. A purchase made before departure is easier to verify than a last-minute attempt after the catalog license has changed.
Can you still buy a game after it leaves Game Pass?
Often, yes, if the game remains listed for sale in your region and on your platform. A Game Pass catalog departure and a store delisting are separate events. Xbox’s departure announcement tells you that subscription access is ending; it does not, on its own, say that the digital store listing has been removed.

Search the Xbox store directly after the departure date. Look for a normal purchase button rather than an “included with Game Pass” installation path. If the game is still sold, buying it then gives you the separate purchase route Microsoft describes. The price may be different from the pre-departure offer, and the advertised “up to 20%” member discount should not be assumed to continue.
If the title no longer appears for purchase, check whether a physical release exists for your console and region. A disc can provide a different path to the game’s base software, but it does not guarantee that online services, patches, downloadable expansions, or other required features will remain available. Confirm the exact edition and console compatibility before buying second-hand or imported media.
Does buying a game protect it from delisting?
A purchase protects your entitlement differently from a subscription: it is the method Microsoft identifies for continuing to use a title after that title leaves the Game Pass catalog. It does not create an unconditional promise that every related service will operate forever.
Digital purchase
A digital purchase is tied to the account and platform rules shown at checkout. Keep access to the purchasing account, use the supported console or PC ecosystem, and retain your order information. Future use can still depend on required authentication, online functionality, servers, patches, or downloadable content. The evidence available for this topic does not establish an unconditional guarantee of permanent access independent of Microsoft’s future service operation.
Physical purchase
A compatible disc can be useful when a digital listing is at risk, especially for a single-player base game. Disc ownership does not automatically include every update, expansion, soundtrack, bonus item, or online mode. Some releases still require a download or an online connection for installation or updates. Check the game’s support and compatibility information for your exact Xbox model before treating a disc as a fallback.
Online and downloadable dependencies
Neither a subscription nor a purchase can revive a publisher’s discontinued servers. Before spending money, identify whether the game requires online authentication, multiplayer servers, a separate account, or downloadable content for the mode you care about. A purchase secures the license to the game you bought; it cannot guarantee that every network-dependent component will remain available.

A practical decision process
- Record the exact title and platform. Note whether you intend to play on Xbox One, Xbox Series, Windows PC, or a Play Anywhere-supported combination. Editions and licenses can differ.
- Open the current Game Pass listing. Confirm that the game is still included, read the “Leaving soon” information, and note the departure date shown for your market.
- Open the current purchase listing. Check the digital price, edition contents, currency, and supported platform while signed in to the account that will play the game.
- Check for the member discount. If a discounted price appears, record the actual amount. Treat Xbox’s published “up to 20%” figure as a ceiling, not a standard rate.
- Estimate your intended play window. Compare the purchase price with the subscription cost for the months you would need to finish or revisit the game. Do not use a generic break-even number; plan prices and your region determine the result.
- Check physical alternatives. If the digital listing is unavailable or expensive, verify the disc edition, region, condition, and compatibility with your console. Confirm whether the game still needs downloads or online services.
- Decide based on your return value. Buy when replaying, preserving a favorite, or finishing after removal matters more than minimizing upfront spend. Stay with Game Pass when variety and short-term access are your priorities.
- Save proof of the transaction. Keep the order email and make sure the game appears in your owned library after purchase. This avoids confusion between an installed subscription copy and a purchased license.
How to think about the cost
There is no universal Game Pass-versus-purchase break-even point because the answer depends on the plan, region, title price, discount, and time you expect to play. Use this simple comparison:
- Subscription route: monthly or other recurring plan cost multiplied by the months you need access, including any period after the game leaves when you would have to keep subscribing.
- Purchase route: the current digital or physical price, minus any confirmed member discount, plus any edition-specific content you actually need.
For a game you will play once during a short period, a subscription may be cheaper even if you later lose access. For a game you revisit over several years, buying can avoid paying repeatedly just to retain access to one title. Include the value of the rest of the catalog: if you would subscribe anyway for other games, the marginal cost of playing this one is lower than the full plan price. Conversely, buying a title you may never launch again can be poor value even with a discount.
Do not treat the maximum 20 percent figure from the September 2025 Xbox announcement as a standing price rule. Verify the checkout amount for the specific title, account, platform, and market on the day you purchase.

Readers often use “delisted” for several different situations. Distinguishing them prevents the wrong decision:
- Game Pass removal: the title leaves the subscription catalog. Your subscription can continue, but that game requires renewed access or a separate purchase.
- Digital store delisting: the title is no longer offered for new digital purchase in a particular store or market. Existing purchasers may have different download rights under the platform’s rules.
- Edition or platform removal: one console version, bundle, or region disappears while another remains available.
- Service shutdown: servers or online functions are discontinued. A purchase or disc cannot restore those services.
Because these events are independent, verify the exact store status instead of assuming that a Game Pass departure means the game is impossible to buy.
Notifications and monitoring
Xbox has described several ways to identify departing games. Its November 17, 2020 explainer said titles were confirmed in regular Xbox Wire posts and through mobile notifications, and advised members to use the discount before a game leaves. That statement documents the process described at that time; notification behavior and app labels can change, so check current settings rather than relying on the old explanation.

For a game you care about, monitor the title’s live Xbox listing, the current Game Pass “Leaving soon” section, and official Xbox announcements. Dates and offers can be market-specific. A page localized for Croatia, for example, is not proof that the same catalog, price, or discount applies in another country.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming installation equals ownership
An installed Game Pass copy remains subject to the subscription and catalog license. If the title leaves, launch access can be blocked until you renew or buy it.
Assuming every departing game gets 20 percent off
The published offer says “up to 20%.” Check the exact price in your account; do not calculate savings from the maximum.
Confusing catalog removal with store removal
Search the current purchase listing after a departure notice. A game can leave Game Pass and remain for sale, or disappear from sale independently.
Buying the wrong edition or platform
Confirm Xbox One versus Xbox Series support, PC compatibility, Play Anywhere eligibility where relevant, and the contents of deluxe or bundled editions before checkout.

Assuming a purchase guarantees every future service
Microsoft’s rules identify a separate purchase as the route to continue using content after catalog removal, not as an unconditional guarantee that online infrastructure or every associated feature will operate indefinitely.
Decision examples
You want to sample ten games this month
Game Pass is usually the better fit. The subscription spreads the upfront cost across a broad rotating library, and you accept that individual titles can leave.
You are halfway through a long campaign that leaves next week
Check the remaining play time, the current purchase price, and the displayed member offer. Buying is sensible if renewing for an uncertain period would cost more or if you want to replay the campaign later.
You only play one older favorite every few months
A purchase, especially a compatible physical edition if the digital listing is at risk, avoids maintaining a subscription solely for that title. Confirm that the modes you use do not depend on discontinued services.
The game has already left and no digital listing appears
Look for an authorized physical release compatible with your console, then verify installation, patch, DLC, and online requirements. If no supported purchase path exists, a prior Game Pass installation does not create a new entitlement.
