Short answer: Choose Essential for the lowest-cost console library and online multiplayer, Premium for a larger cross-device catalog if you can wait up to a year for select Xbox-published games, Ultimate for day-one releases plus the broadest catalog and bundled memberships, or PC Game Pass for a PC-only setup with day-one games and EA Play. The prices below are the US rates displayed on Xbox and Microsoft Store pages accessed October 13, 2026; check your local storefront before subscribing.

Xbox Game Pass plans at a glance

There are four plans for US customers: Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass. The first three are presented for console, PC, and supported devices, while PC Game Pass is focused on Windows PC. The catalog counts are official headline figures, not guarantees that every listed game works on every device or remains available in every region.

Plan Displayed US monthly price Advertised catalog New-release timing Cloud-play allowance shown by Microsoft Store Notable inclusions Best fit
Essential $9.99 50+ games No day-one new releases 5 hours per month Online console multiplayer, in-game benefits, Rewards Budget-minded console players
Premium $14.99 200+ games Select new Xbox-published games within one year 10 hours per month Broader multi-device library, in-game benefits, Rewards Players who want more games but can wait
Ultimate $22.99 500+ games New games on day one 15 hours per month EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, highest-quality or priority streaming described on the Store listing Players who will use day-one access and the bundles
PC Game Pass $13.99 300+ PC games Day-one titles Xbox Cloud Gaming is not included EA Play and in-game benefits PC-first players

Prices are recurring monthly rates displayed for the US and can change or be accompanied by promotions. Microsoft says game titles, counts, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform.

What each plan includes

Essential: the lower-cost console entry point

Essential costs $9.99 per month on the cited US pages and advertises a library of more than 50 games. It includes online multiplayer for paid console games, in-game benefits, and Rewards. The Store listing shows 5 hours of cloud play per month. It does not provide day-one access to new releases.

#1 Best Overall
$100 XBOX Gift Card [Digital Code]
  • THE PERFECT GAMING GIFT — Buy an XBOX Gift Card for yourself or a friend and let them choose the games, add‑ons, subscriptions, and accessories they want most.
  • USE FOR GAMES & CONTENT — Redeem for thousands of digital XBOX games, from backward compatible classics to the latest new releases, plus DLC and in‑game currency.
  • GAME PASS READY — Apply your balance toward XBOX Game Pass Ultimate to play new titles on day one* and access a library of hundreds of high‑quality console games.
  • PRE‑ORDER & PRE‑INSTALL GAMES — Use your balance to pre‑order and pre‑download upcoming titles so you’re ready to play the moment they launch.
  • NO FEES OR EXPIRATION — XBOX Gift Cards never expire and have no service fees, so your balance is ready whenever you are.

Do not buy Essential solely to play free-to-play multiplayer games. Xbox makes multiplayer access for free-to-play titles available to every Xbox player, so those games do not require a Game Pass subscription. Essential makes sense when you want its included catalog, paid-game multiplayer, or benefits.

Premium: a larger library without day-one pricing

Premium is listed at $14.99 per month and advertises more than 200 games across supported devices. Select new Xbox-published games are stated to arrive within one year of release. That is a window, not a promise of launch-day access or a fixed date for any particular title.

The plan page shows 10 cloud-play hours per month, along with in-game benefits and Rewards. Premium is the middle option for someone who wants substantially more catalog depth than Essential and is comfortable waiting for qualifying first-party releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ultimate: the broadest advertised package

Ultimate is listed at $22.99 per month and advertises more than 500 games. It includes new games on day one, so subscribers can play qualifying releases when they launch rather than waiting for a later catalog addition.

Rank #2
$10 XBOX Gift Card [Digital Code]

The bundle also includes EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics. The Microsoft Store listing describes the highest-quality or priority streaming experience among the plans, while still limiting cloud use to 15 listed hours per month. Ultimate is most defensible when you will actually use the day-one catalog and at least one of the included memberships; otherwise its $8 monthly premium over PC Game Pass or $13 premium over Essential may buy benefits you never use.

PC Game Pass: a focused PC subscription

PC Game Pass costs $13.99 per month on the displayed US pages and advertises more than 300 PC games. It includes day-one PC titles, EA Play, and in-game benefits.

Xbox Cloud Gaming is not included. That omission is decisive for anyone who wants to stream games to a phone, browser, television, or another supported device. PC Game Pass is the focused choice when your games are installed and played on PC and you want day-one releases without paying for console-oriented bundles.

Which plan is best for your gaming habits?

You mainly play on an Xbox console and want to spend as little as possible

Start with Essential. Confirm that the games you want are in its current catalog and that you need multiplayer for paid games. If your regular games are free-to-play, the multiplayer requirement does not justify the subscription by itself. Move to Premium only when the larger library or its qualifying first-party releases within one year outweigh the additional $5 per month.

Rank #3
$50 XBOX Gift Card [Digital Code]

You use both console and PC and are patient about releases

Premium is the compromise tier. It provides a 200-plus advertised library across supported devices and 10 listed cloud hours, while accepting that select Xbox-published games may take up to a year to arrive. Check each must-play title by platform: a game shown in the overall catalog may not have a console, PC, or cloud version in your region.

You want every major release on launch day

Compare Ultimate and PC Game Pass according to where you play. Ultimate is the day-one choice for a mixed console-and-PC household and adds EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, and cloud hours. PC Game Pass also has day-one titles and EA Play but excludes cloud gaming and is designed for PC. Paying for Ultimate makes sense only if the cross-device access, cloud allowance, or bundled memberships have real value to you.

You play exclusively on PC

Choose PC Game Pass if your priority is a large Windows PC library, day-one PC releases, and EA Play. Its $13.99 displayed rate is $1 less than Ultimate and $4 more than Essential, but those comparisons matter only if you would use the omitted or added features. There is no cloud-play allowance to evaluate because cloud gaming is not part of this plan.

You want to stream games rather than install them

Compare Essential, Premium, and Ultimate by their listed monthly cloud allowances: 5, 10, and 15 hours, respectively. Cloud play also depends on a supported region, device, network connection, and a game that is available for streaming. PC Game Pass is not an alternative for this use case because it does not include Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Rank #4
$25 XBOX Gift Card [Digital Code]

Day-one access versus later catalog access

Release timing is the clearest dividing line. Ultimate and PC Game Pass advertise day-one titles. Premium promises select new Xbox-published games within one year, which can be much later than launch and does not apply to every new game. Essential explicitly has no day-one new-release access.

Day-one wording still does not mean every game on every platform. A title may launch on console but not PC, or have different cloud availability. Check the game’s current product page and the platform you intend to use before assuming your plan covers it.

Catalog counts are useful, but your own game list matters more

The advertised counts are 50-plus for Essential, 200-plus for Premium, 500-plus for Ultimate, and 300-plus PC games for PC Game Pass. They indicate relative breadth, not a permanent inventory. Microsoft’s availability notice says that game titles, number, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform.

  1. Write down the games you expect to play during the next few months.
  2. Search the current Xbox catalog for each title while signed into the storefront for your country.
  3. Confirm the edition and platform: console, PC, or cloud.
  4. Check whether the game is included with your exact plan rather than merely listed on a general Game Pass page.
  5. Repeat the check for any day-one release whose launch timing is central to your decision.

This process prevents a large headline catalog from hiding the absence of the two or three games you actually care about.

Cloud gaming: hours, eligibility, and practical limits

The Microsoft Store listings show monthly cloud-play limits of 5 hours for Essential, 10 for Premium, and 15 for Ultimate. These are plan-page allowances, not independent measurements of performance or a guarantee of uninterrupted play. The allowance may be consumed quickly by long sessions, so cloud-first players should compare the limit with their normal monthly usage.

Cloud gaming requires a supported region and device, and the streamable catalog has its own eligibility rules. Connection quality, input device, and network conditions affect the experience. Ultimate’s listing describes higher-quality or priority streaming, but that description does not remove regional, device, catalog, or monthly-hour conditions.

How to choose in five steps

  1. Set your primary device. Select PC Game Pass for a PC-only setup; consider Essential, Premium, or Ultimate when console or supported-device play is part of the plan.
  2. Mark your release priority. If day-one access is mandatory, eliminate Essential and Premium. If waiting up to one year is acceptable for select Xbox-published games, Premium remains viable.
  3. Count your cloud hours. Estimate monthly streaming time and compare it with the listed 5-, 10-, or 15-hour allowance. Exclude PC Game Pass if cloud gaming is required.
  4. Price the extras you will actually use. Ultimate’s EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics are valuable only when they replace memberships or purchases you would otherwise make.
  5. Verify the must-play catalog today. Availability changes, so perform the storefront search immediately before subscribing and again before a major release.

Price, promotions, and billing details

For the US pages accessed October 13, 2026, the displayed monthly rates are $9.99 for Essential, $14.99 for Premium, $22.99 for Ultimate, and $13.99 for PC Game Pass. The gap from Essential is $5 for Premium, $13 for Ultimate, and $4 for PC Game Pass. Those are simple price differences, not a value judgment: the right comparison depends on the games, devices, cloud use, and bundled services you will use.

Subscription terms describe recurring billing unless you cancel. Promotional offers may apply to some tiers, and the checkout page is the authoritative price for your account and location. US figures should not be used as worldwide prices because local currency, tax, promotions, and plan availability differ. A Microsoft or Xbox Gift Card may be used as a payment or gifting route where eligible, subject to redemption terms.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the biggest number is automatically best. A 500-plus catalog does not guarantee your preferred game, platform, or region.
  • Confusing Premium’s window with day-one access. Within one year can mean a substantial wait and applies only to select Xbox-published games.
  • Buying Essential for free-to-play multiplayer. Xbox allows multiplayer for free-to-play games without a subscription.
  • Expecting PC Game Pass to stream games. Xbox Cloud Gaming is excluded from that plan.
  • Ignoring cloud-hour limits. Listed allowances are 5, 10, and 15 hours per month, not unlimited use.
  • Using US prices in another country. Check the local Xbox storefront for currency, taxes, promotions, and supported features.
  • Assuming a bundle replaces every service. Ultimate includes specific memberships, not every game publisher’s subscription or every edition of a game.

The practical verdict

Essential is the sensible starting point for a budget console player who needs paid-game multiplayer and finds enough games in the 50-plus catalog. Premium is the balanced choice for a broader cross-device library when waiting for select first-party games is acceptable. Ultimate is the premium option for people who will use day-one releases, cloud play, and its EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics bundle. PC Game Pass is the cleanest fit for PC-only players who want day-one titles and EA Play but have no need for cloud gaming. Before paying, verify your must-play games, platform, region, and the live checkout price.
