PC Game Pass is Xbox’s subscription built for playing a rotating library of PC games on Windows. It combines catalog access with selected new releases, EA Play, and in-game benefits; you can play eligible titles only while your subscription is active and each title remains available in the catalog.
This guide explains the current US plans, what “access” really means, Windows and app requirements, setup, billing, and how to choose between the PC-focused option and broader Game Pass tiers. What does PC Game Pass include?
The PC Game Pass tier is the PC-only option in Xbox’s current lineup. Xbox describes it as including more than 300 games playable on PC, day-one releases, EA Play, and in-game benefits. “PC only” describes where this tier is intended to be used: a compatible Windows computer through the Xbox PC app. It is not the same entitlement as playing every console or cloud title. A game can also have separate PC requirements, storefront behavior, or regional availability even when it appears in the service.

For someone who plays only on Windows, the practical comparison is whether the PC tier’s catalog and day-one access meet your needs. Ultimate costs more because it combines PC, console, supported-device access, and cloud play. Premium and Essential may suit people who want a lower-priced, multi-device subscription and can wait for new Xbox-published games or do not need day-one releases.
How long do you keep access to a game?
Game Pass is a subscription license, not permanent ownership. Xbox’s FAQ states that subscribers can play games in the library until the subscription is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the Game Pass library. That wording applies even if a title is installed on your drive. If either condition ends your entitlement, launching the game can require renewing the subscription or buying the title separately. Catalog availability can differ by plan, country, platform, and time. A game listed for console or cloud is not automatically a PC entitlement, and a title can be removed after you have downloaded it. Before starting a long playthrough, open the game’s current PC listing and check its availability and any announced removal date.
Windows and PC requirements
Xbox lists Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or higher, plus the Xbox PC app as the baseline for PC Game Pass. The app-level requirements shown by Xbox include 150 MB of storage and a 720p display. These figures only describe the service and app; they do not mean a computer can run every included game.
- Operating system: Update Windows 10 or 11 to version 22H2 or later.
- Xbox PC app: Install the current app and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription.
- Storage: Reserve the space required by each game; the app’s 150 MB figure is not a game-install requirement.
- Hardware: Compare the individual listing’s processor, graphics, memory, storage, and operating-system requirements with your PC.
- Display: Xbox lists 720p for the app, while a game may recommend a higher resolution or refresh rate.
- Windows mode: Xbox notes that using the Xbox PC app may require leaving Windows S mode.
Use the game’s own Xbox listing as the final authority for compatibility. A PC that installs the app can still fall below a particular game’s minimum specifications, produce poor performance, or lack a required Windows update. The published service requirements are listed on the PC Game Pass page.

How to start playing on a Windows PC
- Check Windows: Open Windows Settings, view your system information, and install updates until the version is 22H2 or newer.
- Install the Xbox PC app: Download the current app from Microsoft, install it, and sign in with the account you will use for Game Pass.
- Choose a plan: Review the live price, renewal terms, and regional offer before confirming payment. The US purchase listing is Xbox’s PC Game Pass store page.
- Browse the catalog: In the app, use search and PC-focused filters to find games. Open a title’s detail page rather than relying only on a promotional tile.
- Verify compatibility: Read the title’s minimum requirements, supported platform, language or regional notes, and available installation size.
- Install: Select the install command, choose a drive with enough free space, and allow the Xbox app and any required Windows components to finish.
- Launch and manage: Start the game from the app or Windows. Keep the app signed in to the subscribing account so the entitlement can be checked.
If a game disappears from your installed list or asks you to subscribe again, first confirm that you are signed in to the purchasing account and that the title is still included in your current plan and region.

Which plan fits your use?
Choose PC Game Pass when Windows is your only platform
The PC tier is the focused choice if you do not need console access or cloud play and want the catalog’s PC releases, EA Play, and in-game benefits. Its value depends on how many included PC games you actually play; a subscription is not automatically cheaper than buying a small number of games outright.
Choose Ultimate for a multi-device household
Ultimate is designed for people switching among PC, console, and supported devices, or who specifically want cloud play and the listed bundled services. The larger catalog count does not guarantee that every game is available on every device, so check each title’s platform labels.

Consider Premium if waiting is acceptable
Premium provides a broad multi-device library, but Xbox-published games are described as arriving within 12 months instead of on day one. That delay is the key trade-off for a player who wants a lower monthly price than Ultimate while still using more than a PC.
Consider Essential for the lowest listed tier
Essential is the entry-level multi-device option. It has the smallest stated catalog and excludes new releases on day one, making it most appropriate when price matters more than immediate access to new games.

The US store listing shows PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month. That is a recurring subscription: Xbox says billing continues automatically unless you cancel, and the main PC page says recurring billing is enabled by default. Promotional prices can be offered to eligible accounts, so the amount and renewal date shown on your Microsoft checkout screen take precedence over a general plan page.

To stop the next charge, open your Microsoft account’s Services and subscriptions area, select Game Pass, choose Manage, and use the cancellation or recurring-billing control shown there. Turning off recurring billing prevents future renewal; the account page will display the effective end date and any remaining access. Check that date before uninstalling games or assuming access has ended.
Common pitfalls and practical fixes
- Assuming installation equals ownership: An installed game still requires an active entitlement. Check subscription status and catalog inclusion before troubleshooting files.
- Using the wrong account: Sign out and back in with the Microsoft account that purchased the plan. A Windows login and an Xbox app login can be different.
- Expecting every catalog title to run: Read the individual game requirements; the app’s baseline requirements are not performance guarantees.
- Missing a plan limitation: Confirm whether the listing is PC, console, or cloud and whether your chosen tier includes that platform.
- Forgetting regional differences: Catalogs, prices, promotions, and availability vary by market. Use the store set to your country.
- Being surprised by renewal: Review recurring-billing status immediately after subscribing and again before a promotional period ends.
- Windows S mode blocking use: Follow Windows’ supported process for switching out of S mode if the Xbox PC app requires it; switching modes can be one-way.
What can change after you subscribe?
Xbox’s published counts, game lists, features, and benefits are live-page figures, not fixed historical guarantees. Titles can enter or leave the catalog, and availability can differ by region, plan, and platform. Day-one treatment can also depend on the specific game and the tier you selected. For an important purchase or a game you plan to play immediately, verify the title page and your account’s plan details on the day you subscribe.
The most reliable workflow is therefore simple: use the plan table to narrow your choice, confirm the checkout terms for your market, inspect each game’s PC listing and requirements, and keep recurring billing under review. That avoids treating Game Pass as a permanent library or assuming that one PC-compatible plan covers every Xbox game.
