If you would rather choose and pay for specific games than maintain a recurring catalogue subscription, the clearest Game Pass alternative is to buy games individually. On Xbox, that means digital purchases through the Xbox storefront or physical discs on supported hardware, particularly Xbox Series X. On PC, you can buy individual games from a storefront such as Steam. Other subscriptions, including PlayStation Plus, provide another catalogue rather than buy-to-own access, so they only make sense if you still want a rotating library.
What counts as a Game Pass alternative?
“Alternative” can mean two different things. You may want to stop paying for a recurring service and purchase only the games you actually play, or you may want another subscription with a different catalogue. Those choices solve different problems.
- Individual purchases: You pay for selected games one at a time, digitally or physically where supported.
- Another catalogue subscription: You pay recurring fees for access to a changing set of games.
- Cloud access: You stream games instead of installing them, subject to the provider’s eligible titles, hours and markets.
For a player who specifically prefers buying games, individual purchases are the direct answer. A subscription can still be useful when you play many included titles or need bundled online multiplayer, but it is not ownership of a selected collection.
Quick comparison of the main options
| Option | How you pay | Format | Best for | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox digital purchases | One purchase per game | Digital license tied to an account | Xbox players who want selected titles without a catalogue subscription | Access depends on the account and applicable platform terms |
| Xbox physical games | One purchase per disc; new or used copies may be available | Disc, on supported Xbox hardware and titles | Players who want a tangible copy or may shop used | Disc support, edition, compatibility and required downloads are title-specific |
| PC storefront purchases | One purchase per game | Digital license | PC players who want to select their own library | Storefront, publisher and country terms differ; Steam requires an account and may require its client and an internet connection |
| PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium | Recurring subscription | On-demand catalogue | Players who still want a curated subscription library on PlayStation | It is catalogue access, not a replacement for buying individual games |
| Announced Xbox cloud-hours option | Game Pass hours or separately purchased cloud hours | Streaming | Players who own eligible games but prefer not to install them | Announced for November 2026; price, eligible games and market availability were still pending on September 3, 2026 |
Buying games individually on Xbox
Digital purchases through the Xbox storefront
If you already use Xbox, purchasing a particular game digitally is the least disruptive switch from Game Pass. You select the title in the Xbox store, complete the purchase, and install it from the account that acquired the license. The Xbox plan information distinguishes games sold separately from subscription benefits, so a game you buy is not dependent on remaining subscribed to Game Pass.

- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
Digital buying is convenient: there is no disc to store, you can preload some releases when supported, and the game is available from your console’s library after signing into the purchasing account. The trade-off is account dependence. “Buying” is normal consumer language, but a digital transaction grants access under the platform’s and publisher’s terms; it should not be described as unrestricted ownership of the software or a guaranteed permanent service.
When digital Xbox buying is a good fit
- You play a small, stable list of games rather than sampling a large catalogue.
- You use more than one compatible Xbox console and want account-based access.
- You do not want to change discs or store physical cases.
- You are comfortable retaining the purchasing account and following its security and access rules.
What to check before paying
- Confirm the exact edition, platform and generation listed on the store page.
- Check whether the game supports the multiplayer modes you need and whether any online service requirement applies.
- Review the download size and available storage on your console.
- Verify that you are signed into the account that should receive the purchase.
- Keep the receipt and understand the storefront’s refund and licensing terms before assuming a purchase can be transferred.
Physical Xbox games: discs, used copies and Series X compatibility
What a physical purchase gives you
A disc is a tangible product that can be stored, lent under applicable rules or purchased used. It can also be useful if you prefer not to make every game dependent on a digital storefront transaction. However, a disc is not automatically a complete, offline copy in every case. Modern games may require downloads, updates, an account, a license check or additional content, and those requirements vary by title.
Xbox Series X disc support
In an Xbox Wire announcement dated August 26, 2026, Microsoft said most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support a feature that can attach a digital entitlement after you insert a supported disc and launch the game on Xbox One or Xbox Series X. The rollout began with thousands of titles. Microsoft also said the disc continues to work as it did before.
This does not mean every Xbox game has a disc edition, that every disc works on every Xbox configuration, or that every title was included at launch. Before buying, verify the specific game, edition and console model. A listing that says “Xbox” may refer to a different generation, a bundle, or a code rather than a playable disc.

Used-disc checklist
- Format: Confirm it is an Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc, not a different platform.
- Edition: Deluxe, collector’s and cross-generation editions can have different entitlements.
- Condition: Inspect the disc for damage and check the seller’s return policy.
- Downloads: Determine whether the game requires a large install or an update before play.
- Codes: Add-on or bonus codes may have been redeemed and should not be treated as part of the used disc’s value.
- Online services: A disc does not guarantee that multiplayer servers or every online feature remain available.
Neither the August announcement nor the other cited material establishes a universal price advantage, guaranteed resale value or a fixed difference between physical and digital prices. Compare the actual edition, condition and current price for the game you want.
Buying individual games on PC
Steam and similar storefronts
PC players can avoid a catalogue subscription by purchasing games individually from a storefront such as Steam. The practical process is straightforward: create or use an account, buy the game, install the storefront client if required, and download the title to a compatible PC.
Steam’s Subscriber Agreement states that “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold” and that a license “confers no title or ownership in the Content and Services.” That language matters when comparing digital buying with a physical disc. It explains the access relationship for Steam; it should not be copied as the exact legal wording for Microsoft or another storefront. Terms vary by storefront, publisher, game and country.
PC purchase checks
- Read the minimum and recommended system requirements, including operating-system and graphics requirements.
- Check whether the game requires the storefront client, an additional launcher or an internet connection.
- Confirm the edition and included downloadable content.
- Review regional activation restrictions and refund conditions before purchase.
- Back up save files where the game and platform permit it; a storefront license does not guarantee that every save or service remains available forever.
Are other subscriptions a real alternative?
PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium
Sony describes PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium as providing an on-demand Game Catalog. Premium adds benefits such as game trials and cloud streaming. These plans can be sensible for someone who wants a curated PlayStation library, but they do not satisfy a preference for buying selected games one at a time.

When accessed in the United States, Sony’s page displayed Premium at $19.99 per month, $54.99 for three months and $159.99 per year. Those figures were a dated US snapshot and should not be treated as a current worldwide price or a permanent rate. Regional taxes, currency, promotions and later price changes can alter the amount.
Nintendo’s digital and physical model
Nintendo’s US storefront presents both individual digital downloads and physical games. It demonstrates that a console ecosystem can support both formats, but a Nintendo purchase is not a substitute for an Xbox-compatible title. Check the platform before applying any comparison.
When another subscription makes sense
- You regularly play enough included games that individual purchases would be less convenient.
- You want to sample many games before deciding what deserves a purchase.
- You need a subscription’s included console multiplayer benefit for paid games.
- You accept that the catalogue, features and availability can change by time, region, plan and platform.
Compare Game Pass with buying only what you play
Xbox says Game Pass titles, features and availability vary over time, by region, plan and platform. Its current comparison page lists Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, Essential and PC Game Pass. Subscriptions recur until canceled, and promotional periods can roll into the then-current regular price unless you cancel.

| Question | If your answer is “yes” | Likely implication |
|---|---|---|
| Will you play many different included games this month? | You value breadth and experimentation. | A subscription may justify its recurring cost. |
| Will you mainly play one or two paid titles for months? | Your library is selective. | Compare the one-time prices of those titles with the plan’s recurring charge. |
| Do you need online multiplayer for paid games? | Multiplayer is central to your use. | Count the relevant subscription benefit or required service in the comparison. |
| Do you play only free-to-play multiplayer games? | Your multiplayer games are free-to-play. | Xbox says online multiplayer for free-to-play titles is open to every Xbox player, so do not pay for a plan solely for that access. |
| Would losing a catalogue title disrupt your play? | You depend on rotating availability. | A subscription’s changing catalogue may be acceptable; an individual purchase gives a more predictable selected library. |
Include only benefits you will actually use. A plan’s headline catalogue size is less important than whether it contains the games you want on your platform and in your region during the period you will play them.
Account access, licenses and long-term expectations
Individual digital purchases reduce recurring billing but do not remove platform terms. Keep the account secure, use a recovery method, and understand whether a purchase can be shared with other profiles or consoles. Do not assume that a digital license can be resold, transferred or used outside the account and devices allowed by the applicable agreement.
Physical media changes the practical risk profile but not every dependency. A disc can be lost or damaged, a game may need patches, and online functions can be discontinued. Conversely, a digital game can remain convenient across supported hardware while still depending on account authentication and storefront availability. Treat “physical versus digital” as a choice about convenience, portability and dependencies—not a guarantee that one format has no restrictions.

Xbox cloud hours for owned games: an upcoming option
On September 3, 2026, Xbox Wire announced planned changes beginning in November 2026. Game Pass was to include monthly cloud hours—15 for Ultimate, 10 for Premium and 5 for Essential—with the ability to buy more hours after the included allowance. The announcement also described an option for people without Game Pass to purchase cloud hours and stream eligible games they own.

At the October 13, 2026 research date, Microsoft had not yet supplied the pricing, eligible-game list or market-availability details for the new buy-cloud-hours option. Treat it as an announced upcoming path, not a universally available service. Ownership of a game will not by itself establish cloud eligibility until Microsoft identifies the supported titles and markets.
Microsoft said it expected the announced limits to affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers. That is a forecast in the 2026 announcement, not an independent measurement or a confirmed post-rollout result.
“We’ll listen closely to player feedback before and after the change takes effect and share any adjustments we make.”

If the feature launches as described, it could suit a player who buys games but has limited storage or wants to play on a supported device without a full installation. It would still be a metered streaming service, with additional questions about latency, supported markets and eligible titles.
How to choose your route
Choose Xbox digital purchases when…
- Your main games are available in the Xbox store.
- You prefer instant access and no physical storage.
- You are comfortable with an account-based license.
Choose Xbox physical discs when…
- You own an Xbox Series X or another supported configuration for the specific title.
- You value a tangible copy or want to compare new and used listings.
- You are willing to check condition, edition, compatibility and downloads.
Choose PC storefront purchases when…
- You play on a capable PC and want a self-selected library.
- You accept storefront-client, account and license requirements.
- You prefer PC-specific sales and settings over console convenience.
Keep a subscription when…
- You use enough catalogue games, multiplayer access or included benefits to justify recurring billing.
- You are happy for availability to change by plan, platform, region and time.
- You value trying many games more than retaining a selected set.
Wait for the cloud-hours details when…
- You own eligible games and streaming would solve a storage or device limitation.
- You can wait until Microsoft publishes prices, title eligibility and market coverage.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every Xbox game has a disc: availability is title-specific.
- Assuming every disc works everywhere: verify the console generation, edition and supported hardware.
- Calling a digital license permanent ownership: account and platform terms govern access.
- Using a subscription price from another country: plans and prices are regional and change over time.
- Counting free-to-play multiplayer as a reason to subscribe: Xbox says that access is open to every Xbox player.
- Using a forecast as a result: the 4% cloud-impact figure was Microsoft’s expectation, not a measured outcome.
- Assuming cloud streaming is already available without Game Pass: the announced option was prospective at the research date.
Bottom line for buyers
For players who prefer selecting games, buy individually: digital Xbox purchases are the simplest route, physical discs are the tangible alternative on supported Xbox hardware, and PC storefronts provide the equivalent choice on computer. Compare the exact titles you will play, include any multiplayer requirement, and account for licensing and compatibility rather than relying on a universal subscription break-even point. Another catalogue subscription is useful only if you still want recurring access, while Xbox’s planned cloud-hours option should be evaluated after its November 2026 pricing, eligible games and market details are confirmed.
