The best Xbox picture comes from the highest resolution and refresh-rate combination that every part of your setup supports. On Xbox Series X|S, open Settings > General > TV & display options, confirm the reported capabilities on 4K TV details, and select 4K, HDR, VRR or 120 Hz only when your television, the specific HDMI port, cable and any receiver or switch in between can carry that signal. Put the TV in its gaming picture mode, then run the Xbox HDR calibration tool while that mode is active.

Start with the complete signal path

Xbox features are negotiated across the entire connection, not just between the console and the television. A Series X|S can output up to 120 Hz, with variable refresh rate (VRR) and automatic low-latency mode switching (ALLM), but each feature appears only when the display and the connection path report support for it.

That path includes four elements:

  • The Xbox model and its current firmware.
  • The HDMI input selected on the television. Ports on the same TV can have different bandwidth or feature support.
  • The HDMI cable.
  • Any soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch or extender between the console and TV.

A television advertised as 4K at 60 Hz does not automatically support 4K at 120 Hz. Treat the TV specification for the exact input in use, rather than the model name alone, as the deciding information.

Recommended setup at a glance

Setting Use it when What to verify
Resolution The TV and HDMI path support the selected resolution. The Xbox 4K TV details screen and the TV’s port specification.
Refresh rate The TV accepts the chosen rate at the selected resolution. Whether the TV lists that combination; 120 Hz is not guaranteed merely because the console offers it.
HDR The TV supports HDR for the console’s input. HDR-capable HDMI mode on the port and the TV’s HDR picture mode.
VRR The TV and HDMI chain support variable refresh. The Xbox video options and the TV’s VRR or adaptive-sync setting.
ALLM Both devices support automatic low-latency switching. Whether the TV changes to its game mode when the Xbox starts a game.
Game Mode Lower input delay matters more than extra image processing. That the TV’s game picture preset is enabled for the Xbox input.

Set up Xbox Series X|S

1. Open the display controls

  1. Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings.
  2. Choose General > TV & display options.
  3. Check the current resolution and refresh-rate fields before changing anything. Menu labels can change with firmware updates.

2. Choose a compatible resolution and refresh rate

Select the highest combination that the TV and cable path explicitly support. If the television is documented only for 4K at 60 Hz on the connected port, use 4K at 60 Hz rather than forcing 120 Hz. If the TV and path are documented for 4K at 120 Hz, select that combination and confirm that the Xbox accepts it.

3. Read the 4K TV details page

Open 4K TV details from the same screen. The page reports which 4K, HDR and related modes the connected setup claims to support. Use it as a diagnostic rather than assuming that a missing option is a console fault.

If a capability is absent, compare the result with the television’s specification for the particular HDMI port. A TV may reserve its highest-bandwidth features for only one or two inputs.

4. Enable optional video features only when reported as compatible

Turn on HDR, VRR and other advanced video modes when the Xbox reports support and the TV documentation confirms the same mode. Series X|S supports VRR and ALLM, but either feature can be unavailable through an incompatible receiver, switch, extender or cable.

VRR is useful when the display supports it because the refresh timing can follow the console’s changing output. ALLM can ask a compatible television to enter its low-latency mode automatically. Neither feature should be forced when the connection does not support it.

Configure the television input

Use the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode

Many televisions ship with standard HDMI bandwidth enabled until you switch the individual port to an enhanced, high-bandwidth or UHD mode. The label varies by manufacturer and model. Samsung, for example, describes the relevant control as Input Signal Plus, also called HDMI UHD Color on some sets. Enable the equivalent option for the port used by the Xbox, then revisit 4K TV details.

Do not enable an enhanced setting on a different input and assume it affects the Xbox. Port-specific settings are common, and changing the wrong input has no effect on the console signal.

Turn on Game Mode when latency matters

Game Mode reduces the image processing that a television normally applies. That generally makes controller actions appear sooner, which is valuable for competitive or timing-sensitive games. It is a latency-oriented preset, not a universal color-accuracy standard: the TV may disable or alter some processing controls while it is active.

If the TV and Xbox both support ALLM, automatic switching can place the TV in its low-latency mode when appropriate. Check that the TV’s ALLM or automatic game mode control is enabled. If you prefer a fixed picture preset, select Game Mode manually for the Xbox input instead.

Leave image controls model-specific

Brightness, contrast, color temperature, local dimming and sharpening names differ substantially among televisions. There is no reliable set of universal numeric values for every panel. Start with the TV’s gaming HDR preset, disable unnecessary artificial sharpening or motion interpolation if those controls are available, and use the Xbox calibration pattern to make the final adjustments.

Calibrate HDR correctly

  1. Put the television on the HDR gaming picture mode used for the Xbox input.
  2. On the Xbox, open the display settings and start the HDR calibration tool.
  3. Follow each on-screen pattern, adjusting the TV or console control only as the pattern instructs.
  4. Save the result, then check a game with its own HDR controls. A game’s tone-mapping option can still require separate adjustment.

The calibration walkthrough is intended to tune advanced picture settings for games; it does not replace a game’s own HDR slider or guarantee identical results on every TV panel. Xbox One S also provides an HDTV calibration walkthrough for brightness, contrast and color.

How to choose among common output scenarios

Your equipment reports Practical choice Reason
4K at 60 Hz, HDR available 4K, 60 Hz and HDR This uses the TV’s documented 4K limit while retaining HDR.
4K at 120 Hz, HDR and VRR available on the Xbox port 4K, 120 Hz, HDR and VRR The full feature set is available through the complete path.
4K at 120 Hz on the TV, but a receiver is rated only for 4K at 60 Hz Connect the Xbox directly to the TV, or use 4K at 60 Hz through the receiver The receiver is the bottleneck, not the console.
HDR listed by the TV but absent in 4K TV details Enable the port’s enhanced HDMI mode, then retest HDR may be disabled until the input is placed in its high-bandwidth mode.
VRR causes a blank screen or unstable picture Temporarily disable VRR for diagnosis Xbox guidance identifies this as a troubleshooting step; it is not a general recommendation to leave VRR off.

Compare setups by capability, not price

When choosing between a direct connection and a receiver-based setup, compare the same five specifications: maximum resolution and refresh rate together, HDR format support, VRR support, ALLM support, and which HDMI ports expose those features. Then verify that the cable and every pass-through device support the identical combination.

A more expensive television is not automatically better calibrated, and a premium receiver can still be the limiting link if its HDMI inputs or output stop at 4K/60. Conversely, a direct connection is not inherently better if the TV port or cable is the actual restriction. Write down the desired mode—such as 4K/120 with HDR and VRR—and check every component against that complete requirement.

Fix missing 4K, HDR or 120 Hz

Work through the chain in this order so that each test isolates one possible limitation.

  1. Open Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details and note exactly which capabilities are missing.
  2. Confirm that the Xbox is connected to the TV input documented for the desired resolution, HDR or refresh rate.
  3. Open the TV’s input settings and enable its enhanced, high-bandwidth or UHD mode for that exact port.
  4. Remove an AV receiver, switch or extender temporarily. Connect the Xbox directly to the TV with the cable supplied with the console where applicable.
  5. Retest the display options and 4K TV details. If the mode now appears, the removed device or its settings are the limiting link.
  6. Inspect the cable specification. Replace it only if the existing cable cannot carry a mode that both the Xbox and TV support.
  7. If the picture remains unstable, disable VRR temporarily and test again. Restore it after identifying and correcting the underlying compatibility issue.

For the 4K content path described in Xbox One S guidance, a pass-through device must support 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2. A device can pass ordinary 4K video yet block a protected 4K/HDR signal if it lacks those capabilities.

When an HDMI cable replacement is justified

An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is a troubleshooting option, not a mandatory upgrade for every Xbox owner. First test the console’s supplied cable, the correct TV port and any pass-through equipment. Replace the cable when the current one is the only component that fails a mode supported by both the console and television, or when direct connection with a known-capable cable restores that mode.

A more expensive cable does not improve color or sharpness when the existing link already carries the selected signal reliably. The purpose of a replacement is to remove a bandwidth or signal-integrity limit.

HDR and 4K on legacy Xbox One consoles

The Xbox One S guidance describes a 4K TV with HDR10 support for its 4K/HDR setup. When the signal passes through another device, that device must support 4K UHD and HDCP 2.2 for the described protected 4K path. Connect the console directly to the TV while diagnosing problems, then add the receiver or switch back after confirming that it supports the same requirements.

Xbox One S includes an HDTV calibration walkthrough for brightness, contrast and color. Legacy Xbox One S/X menus and available video modes can differ from Series X|S and from one firmware release to another, so use the options actually shown on the console and the specifications for the TV input in use.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming 4K means 120 Hz: 4K resolution and refresh rate are separate capabilities.
  • Choosing 120 Hz for every game: the output refresh rate does not guarantee 120 frames per second in game software.
  • Checking only the TV model: the connected HDMI port may have lower capabilities than another port on the same set.
  • Leaving a receiver in the chain during diagnosis: one unsupported pass-through device can hide features the TV and Xbox both support.
  • Using Game Mode as a color prescription: it prioritizes low processing and may change available picture controls.
  • Copying numeric HDR values from another TV: panel behavior and menu ranges are model-specific.
  • Buying a cable first: verify the port, enhanced HDMI setting and pass-through equipment before treating the cable as the cause.

A final setup checklist

  • The Xbox is connected to the TV port specified for the desired bandwidth.
  • 4K TV details shows the resolution, HDR and refresh features you intend to use.
  • The TV’s enhanced HDMI mode is enabled on the Xbox input.
  • Game Mode is on when reduced processing and input delay are priorities.
  • ALLM and VRR are enabled only when both the TV and the HDMI path support them.
  • HDR calibration was run with the TV in its gaming HDR mode.
  • Any receiver, switch or extender supports the same resolution, refresh rate, HDR and HDCP requirements as the direct connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does selecting 120 Hz make every Xbox game run at 120 frames per second?

No. The 120 Hz setting changes the console’s output timing. A game must also support a high-frame-rate or performance mode, and its actual frame rate depends on the software and workload.

Why does my Xbox show 4K but not 4K at 120 Hz?

Your TV may support 4K only at 60 Hz on that input, or the cable, receiver, switch or extender may limit bandwidth. Check the TV’s exact port specification, enable its enhanced HDMI mode and test the Xbox directly with its supplied cable.

Should I always leave VRR enabled?

Enable VRR when the TV and complete HDMI path support it. If VRR causes blanking or instability, disable it temporarily as a diagnostic step, then restore it after correcting the compatibility problem.

Is Game Mode required for HDR?

No. Game Mode primarily reduces television processing and latency. It is usually useful for gaming, but HDR availability depends on the TV’s HDR-capable input mode and the console’s reported compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable?

Only if testing shows the current cable is the limiting component for a mode supported by both the Xbox and TV. A replacement cable does not improve a stable, already-supported signal.

Why is HDR missing even though my TV supports it?

The Xbox may be connected to a port with different capabilities, or the TV’s enhanced/high-bandwidth HDMI option may be disabled. Check that port setting, reconnect directly to the TV if possible and review 4K TV details again.

The Bottom Line

Use the highest resolution and refresh-rate combination that the Xbox, TV input, cable and every pass-through device can support together. Verify it in 4K TV details, enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode, use Game Mode when low latency matters, and calibrate HDR in the TV’s gaming HDR preset. Treat VRR, ALLM and cable upgrades as compatibility decisions, not automatic requirements.
