Home Xbox lets other accounts use your qualifying digital Xbox games, durable add-ons and eligible subscription content on one designated Xbox One or Xbox Series console without your account staying signed in. You can still use your purchases on a second, roaming console, but your account must remain signed in and connected there. The designation is limited to one console at a time, and Microsoft permits up to five Home-console changes in a rolling one-year period.

What Home Xbox actually does

Home Xbox is a device-license setting for Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles. When you designate a console as your Home Xbox, Microsoft attaches your account’s device licenses to that hardware. Other accounts that use the designated console can then launch qualifying digital games and use eligible content from your library, even when your purchasing account is not signed in.

The setting applies to the console, not to a particular second person. Any account that signs in on that Home console can use content that is eligible for sharing under the game, add-on or subscription’s entitlement rules. Home Xbox does not copy a game to another account, merge libraries or transfer ownership. Microsoft describes digital goods as licensed rather than sold, so access remains subject to the applicable Digital Goods usage rules.

Home Xbox is useful when one person owns the digital library but household members use another profile, or when the owner wants to play on a second Xbox while someone else uses the shared console. It is also the mechanism that provides the device-license side of Xbox digital access when the owner is not online.

How Home and roaming access differ

Your account has two access modes: the designated Home console and any other console where you sign in. They are not separate products or subscription tiers; they are different ways Microsoft validates the same licenses.

Situation How access is validated What other accounts can do Owner sign-in requirement
Home Xbox Device licenses are attached to the designated Xbox One or Xbox Series console. Other accounts on that console can use qualifying shared games, durable add-ons and eligible subscription content. Not required for those other accounts to use the shared device licenses.
Roaming console Your account uses its roaming licenses while signed in and connected to Xbox services. Other users on that console can use your qualifying roaming content only while your account remains signed in and connected. Required. Signing out invalidates your roaming licenses for other accounts on that console.

Microsoft’s sharing model allows the owner to play on a roaming console while another account plays on the Home Xbox. The same digital entitlement cannot be used as though it were independently owned on several non-Home consoles: Microsoft says games can be played on only one console at a time. In practice, the common two-console arrangement is the owner on the roaming Xbox and another user on the owner’s Home Xbox.

Can two Xboxes play the same digital game?

Yes, in the supported two-console arrangement. Designate Console A as your Home Xbox. Another account can play a qualifying game on Console A without your account signed in, while you sign in to your own account and play that game on Console B. Console B is the roaming console, so your account must stay connected to Xbox services there.

This does not create two independent licenses. If you sign out of Console B, the other account cannot continue using your roaming license on that console. If you move the Home designation to Console B, the device licenses leave Console A and the sharing behavior changes immediately for the old Home console.

Whether a particular title works in a given situation depends on its entitlement. A game that requires an online service, a subscription that has changed catalog availability, or an add-on marked for personal use may not behave like a standard shareable digital game. Treat Home Xbox as the license mechanism, not a guarantee that every title works offline or that every service feature is shared.

What content is shared—and what is not

Home Xbox covers broad categories, but the individual product’s terms control the final result.

Content type Typical Home Xbox behavior Important qualification
Digital games Qualifying purchased games can be used by other accounts on the Home console. The title must support the relevant license and service requirements.
Durable downloadable content Permanent add-ons associated with the game may be available to other accounts on the Home console. Some DLC or add-ons are restricted to the purchasing account.
Subscription-enabled content Content made available through a subscription can be shared through the Home-console license model. Catalog eligibility, service status and title-specific rules still apply; not every subscription item is guaranteed to share identically.
Consumables Normally not shared. In-game currency, one-time boosts and similar single-use items remain tied to the purchaser.

A useful distinction is durable versus consumable. A durable entitlement remains attached to the game or account over time, while a consumable is spent once or is intended for one player. Home Xbox is designed around the former; it does not turn a purchaser-specific item into a household pool.

  1. Sign in on the target Xbox. Use the Microsoft account that owns the digital games or subscription entitlement.
  2. Open the setting. Go to Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox.
  3. Choose the Home-console option. Select the command to make that Xbox your Home Xbox and confirm the change if prompted.
  4. Allow licensing to update. Keep the console connected while the account’s device licenses move to the newly designated Home console.
  5. Test with the other account. Sign in with the account that will use the shared library, then launch an eligible game or add-on.

When you make a new selection, the previous Home Xbox loses those device licenses. It does not retain a permanent copy of your sharing rights, and a downloaded game does not by itself preserve access after the license moves.

The five-change limit and why it matters

Microsoft permits up to five Home-console changes during a rolling one-year period. The period starts with the first assignment or change and rolls forward rather than resetting on January 1. Microsoft’s user-facing Digital Goods rules state: “You can change your ‘Home’ console up to 5 times during a one-year period; when you do so, all your device licenses will automatically move to, and operate only on, the new ‘Home’ console.”

Once the allowance is exhausted, the console displays the next available change date. A factory reset, uninstalling a game or signing out does not restore a change. Because the allowance is limited, do not switch the designation for temporary troubleshooting or every visit to a friend’s house. Use the roaming method on a non-Home console instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The limit applies to the Home-console designation, not to ordinary sign-ins. You can sign in to another Xbox without changing Home Xbox, but other accounts on that second console will need your account to remain signed in and connected to use your roaming licenses.

Choosing the right Home console

Make the console used most often by the people who need independent access your Home Xbox. That arrangement gives those users device-license access without requiring your account to be present. If you instead make your personal console the Home Xbox, you will need to stay signed in on the household console whenever another account needs your library there.

  • Household sharing: designate the shared household Xbox so other profiles can launch eligible purchases independently.
  • Owner on a second Xbox: keep the household console designated as Home and use your account on the second console as the roaming user.
  • Travel or a temporary console: normally sign in on the temporary Xbox rather than consuming one of the five annual Home changes.
  • Offline use: the Home designation supplies offline device-license behavior, but individual games and subscription services can impose their own online or entitlement requirements.

Troubleshooting when sharing does not work

The other account sees a purchase prompt

  • On the owning account, confirm the console is listed under Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox.
  • Check that you changed the setting on the intended physical Xbox, not merely signed in there.
  • Verify that the game is a qualifying digital entitlement and that the other account is using the same Home console.
  • Check whether the item is a purchaser-only DLC, consumable or subscription entitlement with separate terms.

The game works only while the owner is present

This usually indicates that the console being used is roaming rather than Home. On a roaming console, the purchasing account must stay signed in and connected. If that account signs out, other users lose access to the owner’s roaming licenses.

A subscription game stopped launching

Confirm that the subscription is active and that the title remains included under the service’s current catalog and entitlement rules. Home Xbox shares eligible subscription-enabled content, not an unconditional promise that every catalog item remains available to every profile.

An add-on is missing

Determine whether it is durable DLC or a personal-use add-on. Durable content may share through Home Xbox, while some add-ons are restricted to the purchaser. In-game currency and one-time boosts are consumables and should not be expected on another account.

You cannot make another Home change

Do not repeatedly retry the command. If the five-change allowance has been reached, Xbox shows the next available change date. Until then, use the intended Home console and the signed-in roaming method on other hardware.

Important licensing and account boundaries

Home Xbox is a license-sharing feature, not an ownership-transfer system. The purchasing account remains the license holder, and Microsoft’s terms govern whether a particular digital good can be used, for how long and by which accounts. Removing a title from a subscription catalog, changing an entitlement or applying a personal-use restriction can change the result without any Home-console setting being wrong.

The available documentation explains the license behavior but does not establish a universal rule that every game, online-only title or subscription item works offline indefinitely. Describe offline access as a benefit of the Home-console device license and then check the title’s own requirements. Similarly, do not assume that a downloaded copy, an add-on or a consumable has the same sharing rights as the base game.

A practical setup checklist

  • Identify the one Xbox that should provide independent access to other profiles.
  • Check how many Home-console changes remain before switching; the allowance is five in a rolling year.
  • Sign in on that console and use Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox.
  • Test one purchased game with the other account before relying on a larger library.
  • Separate durable games and add-ons from consumables and purchaser-only content.
  • On every roaming console, keep the purchasing account signed in and connected if another user needs its licenses.
  • If access fails, verify Home status first, then the entitlement type, then subscription or title-specific requirements.

Bottom line

Home Xbox is the simplest way to share qualifying digital Xbox purchases with other accounts on one console. Designate one Xbox One or Xbox Series console, and its device licenses let other profiles use eligible games, durable DLC and subscription-enabled content without your account signed in. Your account can play on another console at the same time, but that console is roaming: you must stay signed in and connected, and other users there lose access when you sign out. Because the designation moves all device licenses and can be changed only five times in a rolling year, choose the Home console deliberately and treat each game or add-on’s entitlement rules as the final authority.
