Short answer: Xbox Series X|S can run many Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, but only titles in Microsoft’s selected backward-compatible catalog. Owned digital games from that catalog normally appear in Ready to install. A cross-generation purchase does not automatically include a native Series X|S build: check the listing for Smart Delivery or a clearly stated upgrade entitlement. Before buying, verify the supported consoles, included content and version path. If you change your mind, Microsoft provides a digital-game refund request route, but digital purchases are generally non-returnable unless applicable law or Microsoft’s current regional policy allows a refund.

What you are actually buying

An Xbox Store purchase can represent several different things: ownership of one game build, ownership of versions for multiple console generations, a bundle containing expansions, or access supplied through a subscription. The cover art and words such as “Deluxe” or “Ultimate” do not define those rights by themselves.

Read the individual Store listing as a contract for that SKU. Confirm three separate questions before selecting Buy:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Where can it run? Look for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or both in the supported-platform information.
  • What is included? Identify the base game, expansions, season pass, currency, cosmetic packs and other add-ons.
  • How do versions arrive? Look for Smart Delivery, a named upgrade entitlement, or separate generation-specific products.

Microsoft’s publishing guidance treats platform lists and included content as separate SKU properties. That is why an edition name is a poor substitute for reading the contents and compatibility lines.

Will my Xbox One digital games transfer to Series X|S?

Many will. Xbox Series X|S supports selected Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games through backward compatibility. For an owned digital title that is in the official catalog, Xbox says the game should appear in Ready to install on an Xbox One or Series X|S console associated with the purchasing account. The backward-compatible entitlement is not a second purchase.

The important word is selected. A game does not become compatible merely because it was released for Xbox One, Xbox 360 or the original Xbox. The publisher must have a title included in Microsoft’s supported catalog, and availability can differ by game and market. Search the exact title in the current Xbox backward-compatible games catalog before you buy or plan a reinstall. The US and UK catalog pages describe the same basic digital-library behavior, but a regional Store listing remains the best check for what you can download.

How to move an owned digital game

  1. Sign in on the Series X|S with the Microsoft account that owns the game, or with an account in the same console’s approved sharing arrangement.
  2. Open My games & apps, then choose Full library and Owned games (wording can vary slightly by system update).
  3. Search for the title. An eligible owned game can also appear in the console’s Ready to install list.
  4. Select the game and choose Install all, or select only the components you want.
  5. If it is missing, compare the signed-in account and region with the purchase record, then search the exact title in the official backward-compatible catalog.

This process transfers the digital license, not necessarily the same files. A backward-compatible game may download a package optimized for Series X|S while still being the Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox version running under compatibility support.

Can I play Xbox 360 games on Xbox Series X?

Yes, when the particular Xbox 360 title is in the selected backward-compatible catalog. Series X|S can run eligible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games as well as selected Xbox One games. Ownership and compatibility are separate checks: owning a digital 360 game does not add a title to the catalog, and a title in the catalog does not grant ownership if you never purchased it.

What to check for an older title

  • Search the exact game name, including the edition or regional variant, in Xbox’s backward-compatible catalog.
  • Check the Store page from the account and region that will make the purchase. Delisted products, bundles and region-specific releases can have different listings.
  • Confirm whether the listing is a standalone game or an add-on that requires another product.
  • Do not infer support from the presence of a disc release. Disc licensing and digital licensing follow different paths, and this guide concerns digital purchases.

If the catalog does not list the title, treat Series X|S support as unconfirmed rather than assuming that a newer console will run it.

Backward compatibility is not the same as a native Series X|S version

A compatible Xbox One game can run in a compatibility mode on Series X|S. A separate native Series X|S build may offer different assets, performance options or installation requirements. The two versions can share a Store page, or they can be sold as distinct products.

Microsoft’s technical guidance states that Xbox One games without Smart Delivery run by default in compatibility mode on Series X|S. Games that do use Smart Delivery must also work correctly in that mode. Therefore, the phrase “plays on Series X|S” does not, by itself, prove that you receive a native next-generation build.

Do I have to buy the game again for the Series X version?

Not necessarily. You avoid a second purchase when the title’s listing grants both generations through Smart Delivery or explicitly states a free upgrade. You may need a separate purchase when the Store lists an Xbox One product and a Series X|S product with no shared entitlement, or when the publisher sells the enhanced build as a new SKU.

How Smart Delivery works

Xbox describes Smart Delivery as delivering the best available version for the player’s console across generations. It is a per-title feature, not a rule applied to every cross-generation game. Microsoft developer guidance also makes clear that Xbox One games do not use Smart Delivery by default in Series X|S compatibility mode.

For a specific purchase, trust the current listing and the publisher’s stated terms. Look for the Smart Delivery badge or wording that says the purchase includes Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S versions. If the listing only says that an Xbox One game is playable on Series X|S, interpret that as compatibility support unless an upgrade entitlement is stated.

Three common version paths

Listing language or setup What you can expect What it does not establish
Smart Delivery shown The console selects the supported version for the hardware you use, subject to the title’s terms. It does not prove that every add-on or special edition is included; inspect the contents.
Explicit free Series X|S upgrade The publisher has stated an upgrade entitlement for the specified product. It does not automatically cover a different edition or a separately sold expansion.
Xbox One game marked playable on Series X|S The Xbox One version can run through compatibility support. It does not promise a native Series X|S build or enhanced assets.
Separate Xbox One and Series X|S products Each SKU has its own purchase and platform terms. Buying one SKU does not establish ownership of the other.

What is included in the Deluxe Edition?

There is no universal Deluxe Edition package. One publisher may include a season pass; another may include only cosmetic items, early access or a digital soundtrack. A label such as “Deluxe,” “Gold” or “Ultimate” is marketing shorthand, not a standardized contents list.

Edition comparison checklist

Comparison axis Questions to answer on the Store page
Console support Does the SKU list Xbox One, Series X|S, both, or another platform? Is support native, compatibility-based, or unspecified?
Base game Is the full game included, or is this an expansion, upgrade, add-on or bundle that requires a separate base game?
Extra content Which named expansions, season pass, missions, characters, currencies or cosmetic packs are included?
Version path Does the listing identify Smart Delivery, a free upgrade or separate generation products?
Ownership scope Are you purchasing the game, or receiving access through a subscription? Subscription access is not the same as owning the digital license.
Account and region Will the purchase and any included content be usable on the account and in the country where you play?

Reading a bundle without overpaying

  1. Open See all editions or the equivalent selector on the game’s Store page.
  2. Write down the base-game name and every included add-on shown under Included in this bundle or What’s included.
  3. Compare that list with content you already own. A bundle may not reduce the price if it contains an entitlement you cannot remove.
  4. Verify the supported consoles for the exact edition, not just the franchise or standard edition.
  5. Read any note about required subscriptions, online services or separate purchases before checking out.

If the Store page does not state that an item is included, treat it as not included. “Deluxe” alone is not evidence of a season pass, a next-generation upgrade or any particular expansion.

Ownership versus subscription access

A purchased digital game is tied to the purchasing account and its license terms. A subscription can make a game playable while the subscription and catalog availability continue, but it does not necessarily transfer ownership of that game to you. If you are deciding whether a Series X|S purchase is needed, check whether your current access comes from a purchase, a subscription catalog, a shared-console license or a time-limited promotion.

When a game leaves a subscription catalog, continued access generally depends on owning it separately or renewing an eligible access right. The Store’s purchase history is the practical record to consult before buying a second copy.

Can I refund an Xbox digital game?

You may be able to submit a refund request for a game or app through Microsoft’s digital-game refund process. Microsoft Support directs Xbox buyers to sign in and use the order-history-based request flow. A request is not a guarantee of approval: Microsoft’s Store returns policy says digital goods, including games and add-on content, are generally not eligible for return unless applicable law provides a refund right.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to submit a request

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft account that made the purchase.
  2. Open the Microsoft digital game and app refund request route from Microsoft Support, or go to your Microsoft account order history and select the relevant order.
  3. Choose the game or add-on, select the available refund option and provide the requested reason or explanation.
  4. Submit the request and retain the confirmation. Watch the account or email associated with the order for the decision and any follow-up.
  5. If no request option appears, verify that you are using the purchasing account and the correct regional Store. The absence of an option can mean that the order or local policy is not eligible through the self-service route.

Why a request may not be approved

  • The product is a digital good covered by the general no-return rule.
  • The order, account, region or purchase circumstances do not meet the current local policy.
  • The item is an add-on or consumable with separate terms.
  • The request is being made through an account that does not own the transaction.
  • Applicable law, rather than a single worldwide Xbox rule, determines the available remedy in that country.

Microsoft’s published pages do not establish one universal worldwide deadline or play-time threshold that should be applied to every buyer. Do not rely on a fixed number of days or hours quoted for another country. Sign in to the current local policy and order-history flow for the transaction’s region.

Refund troubleshooting by situation

The game was purchased twice

Use the order history to identify both transactions and request help for the duplicate order. Do not assume that a duplicate automatically qualifies; the decision still follows the applicable policy.

The game is not in Ready to install

First confirm that you are signed in with the purchasing account. Then check the exact title in the backward-compatible catalog and review hidden, bundled or edition-specific entries in Full library. If the catalog does not list the game, compatibility is not established even if you own an older console version.

The listing promised an upgrade but the Series X|S version is missing

Capture the current listing’s wording and check whether the entitlement applies to your exact edition. A standard edition and a Deluxe bundle can have different platform lists. If the terms clearly include the Series X|S product, use Microsoft’s support route with the order number and the listing details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You bought an add-on without the base game

Check the add-on’s description for a required base game. Add-ons can appear in the library while remaining unusable until the matching game is installed and owned. A refund request, if available, should identify the add-on order rather than the base game.

A safe purchase workflow

  1. Identify the exact product. Match the title, edition and region to what you intend to play.
  2. Verify compatibility. Search the official backward-compatible catalog for older games and confirm the Store’s supported-console labels for newer products.
  3. Separate compatibility from upgrade rights. Look specifically for Smart Delivery or a named free-upgrade statement.
  4. Audit contents. List the base game and every expansion, pass and add-on included in the SKU.
  5. Check your existing licenses. Review order history and subscription access so you do not pay for a duplicate entitlement.
  6. Save the evidence. Keep the order confirmation and, when upgrade rights matter, retain the listing wording shown at purchase.
  7. Buy only after the regional terms are clear. Refund eligibility and digital-goods rights can vary by country.

Quick decisions for common buying questions

If your situation is… Best interpretation Next action
You own a digital Xbox One game and are moving to Series X|S It transfers only if the title is supported; it may run in compatibility mode. Search the title in the backward-compatible catalog and check Ready to install.
You own an eligible Xbox 360 or original Xbox digital game Series X|S can play it when it is in the selected catalog. Verify the exact title before reinstalling or purchasing related content.
You want the enhanced Series X|S build Compatibility alone does not promise a native build. Look for Smart Delivery or explicit upgrade language.
You are comparing Standard and Deluxe editions The names do not define the package. Compare platform support and the itemized contents list.
You regret a digital purchase A request may be available, but approval is conditional. Use the purchasing account’s order history and the current local refund policy.

The Bottom Line

Check the exact listing and the official compatibility catalog before paying. Selected older games transfer digitally to Series X|S, but compatibility is not the same as a native upgrade; Smart Delivery must be stated for that title. Treat Deluxe contents and refund eligibility as SKU- and region-specific terms, not assumptions based on a label or a universal deadline.
