If your Xbox controller keeps disconnecting from Bluetooth in Windows 11, start with the Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter, then check power, pairing, and distance before changing drivers or controller firmware. Test the controller over USB to see whether the problem is specific to the wireless connection; no single cause is established for every Xbox controller.
Start with Windows’ Bluetooth troubleshooter
Open the Get Help app and run its automated Bluetooth troubleshooter. Microsoft recommends this as a first step for Bluetooth devices that repeatedly disconnects. Follow any instructions it gives, then see whether the controller stays connected. Microsoft’s Bluetooth disconnection guidance identifies power-saving settings, outdated drivers, and temporary system glitches among common causes.
Check the controller’s battery, pairing state, and range
- Battery: Try a charged battery pack or fresh batteries, as appropriate for your controller. Microsoft notes that some Bluetooth devices may not maintain a connection when their battery is low.
- Pairing mode: Make sure the controller is in pairing mode before trying to connect it.
- Distance: Move the controller closer to the PC for a test, and reduce obstacles or sources of interference between them.
These checks matter because a low battery, incorrect pairing state, or being out of range can prevent a Bluetooth device from connecting reliably. Microsoft’s Bluetooth connection troubleshooting page recommends checking battery and range as well as pairing mode.
Remove the controller and pair it again
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Find the Xbox controller in the device list, open its options, and select Remove device.
- Select Add device, choose Bluetooth, and put the controller into pairing mode.
- Select the controller when it appears, then check whether the connection remains stable.
Removing and re-adding a device is a standard Windows troubleshooting step when it appears in Bluetooth settings but will not connect correctly. You can also switch Bluetooth off and back on in Settings, then restart the PC if the pairing attempt still fails. Microsoft lists these steps in its Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.

Check Windows power settings, services, and drivers
Check Energy Saver and adapter power management
If disconnections continue, check whether Energy Saver is enabled. You can also inspect the Bluetooth adapter’s power-saving option in Device Manager and disable it if that option is available. The setting may not appear on every PC or adapter.
Restart Bluetooth Support Service
Restart Bluetooth Support Service from the Windows Services app. If the service is stopped or appears stuck, restarting it can help clear a temporary Bluetooth issue.

Update the Bluetooth driver and Windows
In Device Manager, check for an update for the PC’s Bluetooth adapter. If Windows does not find a suitable driver, check the PC manufacturer’s support page for a driver intended for your exact model. Also open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart the PC. These are Windows troubleshooting steps, not proof that a driver is the cause in every case. Microsoft recommends checking power settings and drivers when Bluetooth connections repeatedly drop, and checking Windows Update and restarting for connection trouble. Use a USB connection to isolate the problem
Connect the controller to the PC with a compatible USB cable and see whether it works reliably. The connector needed depends on the controller model, so use a cable that fits yours.

- Works over USB, disconnects over Bluetooth: The problem is more likely in the wireless connection path—such as pairing, the PC’s Bluetooth components, or controller firmware—than in basic wired operation. This test narrows the possibilities but does not identify a single cause.
- Also fails over USB: Bluetooth is not the only connection path showing trouble. Check the cable and USB port, then consider whether the controller itself needs further troubleshooting.
A Microsoft Q&A answer advises checking for a controller update in the Xbox Accessories app when a controller works by cable but not wirelessly. Connect it by cable, open Xbox Accessories, and check whether an update is offered. This is support guidance from a Q&A answer, not a guarantee that firmware is responsible or that the steps work identically for every controller revision. See the Microsoft Q&A guidance.

If basic Bluetooth troubleshooting does not help, an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows is an alternative wireless path mentioned in Microsoft Q&A guidance. It changes how the controller connects; it does not repair the PC’s Bluetooth stack. Confirm that the exact controller and adapter are compatible before buying or trying one.
