Choose an Xbox console when most of your gaming happens at home on a television and you want a dedicated, low-maintenance appliance. Choose a handheld gaming PC such as the ROG Xbox Ally when playing away from the TV, accessing Windows PC storefronts and applications, or using mods matters more than console-style simplicity.
The decision is not simply “which is faster.” You are choosing between a fixed console ecosystem and a portable Windows computer with integrated controls. Compare the exact Xbox and handheld model, regional price, game version and intended play location before buying.
The short answer depends on where and how you play
An Xbox console is designed around a television, a controller and a living-room setup. It is the better fit for a player who wants to install console games, sit down and play without managing Windows settings or several PC launchers. The Xbox Series S and Series X families also give you different storage and performance tiers, so “an Xbox” is not one fixed specification or price.
A handheld gaming PC is a different category even when it carries Xbox branding. The ROG Xbox Ally family runs Windows 11 and combines a built-in screen and controls with access to PC software. That lets you use more than one game storefront, install ordinary Windows applications and use PC features such as mods. It also means you may encounter launcher sign-ins, compatibility quirks, desktop windows and settings that do not arise on a conventional console.

Use the following priorities as a first filter:
- Mostly television play: start with an Xbox console.
- Portable play: start with a handheld gaming PC.
- Windows apps, multiple PC storefronts or mods: the handheld has the relevant platform capabilities.
- One specific game: verify whether you need its native Windows PC edition, Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play; those are different ways to play.
- A strict budget: compare the exact local listings immediately before purchase, because the available configurations and prices change by region and over time.
What the two sides actually include
Xbox console models
Microsoft’s U.S. Store lists both Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X configurations. The Series S listings include 512GB and 1TB versions. Microsoft describes Series S as digital-only in the refurbished listing shown on that page. Series X listings include a digital 1TB version and additional Series X configurations. The exact bundle, storage and drive configuration therefore matter when you compare two listings.
These are dedicated consoles rather than general-purpose Windows PCs. Their distinguishing setup is a television or monitor, a controller and the console operating environment. You can use an Xbox remotely in some circumstances, but that does not change the console’s primary role as a stationary system.
See Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S store page for the configurations available in the United States. The page is a live retail listing, not a permanent worldwide price list.

Xbox’s handheld page lists three members of the ROG Xbox Ally family:
| Model | Operating system | Processor listed by Xbox | Display | Memory | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ROG Xbox Ally | Windows 11 Home | Ryzen Z2 A | 7-inch, 1920×1080, 120Hz variable-refresh display | 16GB LPDDR5-6400 | 512GB SSD |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | Windows 11 Home | Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme | Same 7-inch, 1920×1080, 120Hz display class listed for the family | 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 | 1TB SSD |
| ROG Xbox Ally X20 | Not stated on the cited Xbox specification page | Not stated on the cited Xbox specification page | 7.4-inch OLED, 1080p, 120Hz | Not stated on the cited Xbox specification page | 1TB |
The specifications above come from Xbox’s ROG Xbox Ally family page. “Not stated” does not mean that a component is absent; it means the linked page does not establish that specification. Confirm the full specification for the exact X20 regional SKU before ordering.
Compare the decision factors that matter in practice
| Your priority | Usually the better starting point | What to check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Play mainly on a TV at home | Xbox console | Choose the Series S or Series X storage and configuration that fit your library and budget. |
| Play on journeys, in another room or away from a TV | Handheld gaming PC | Battery runtime varies with game, brightness, refresh rate and power settings; no fixed runtime is established here. |
| Install Windows applications or use PC storefronts | ROG Xbox Ally family | Windows flexibility also brings launcher management and game-by-game compatibility checks. |
| Want a console-like, appliance-style experience | Xbox console | A handheld can present an Xbox-oriented interface, but it remains a Windows PC underneath. |
| Already own an Xbox library | Depends on the individual title | Determine whether the handheld will run a native Windows version, stream through Cloud Gaming or use Remote Play from your console. |
| Need the lowest confirmed U.S. listing price | Check the live Xbox Store page | Displayed prices are volatile U.S. examples; handheld pricing and stock must be checked with current retailers. |
Game access is not one thing
Many buying mistakes come from treating “Xbox games on a handheld” as a single compatibility promise. There are three materially different routes.
Native Windows PC games
The ROG Xbox Ally runs Windows 11 Home, so it can install compatible PC games and launchers. Microsoft’s announcement describes access to games from different storefronts, ordinary applications and mods. Roanne Sones, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Gaming Devices and Ecosystem, wrote that Windows on these handhelds provides “access to games you can’t get elsewhere” and the ability to download from a favorite storefront, run Discord, watch Twitch and use mods “all straight from the Xbox experience.” That is a statement of intended platform capability, not an independent test showing that every game or mod works perfectly.

- Gaming Resolution: 1440p; Performance Target: Up to 120 FP.
- HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
Native PC games may expose graphics presets, controller mappings, anti-cheat requirements, launcher updates and text that was designed for a larger monitor. A title that runs on Windows is not automatically as seamless as a console release. Check the game publisher’s requirements and current handheld compatibility reports for the specific title you care about.
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud Gaming streams a supported game from Microsoft’s servers rather than running the complete game locally on the handheld. The ASUS ROG product information says Cloud Gaming requires a Game Pass membership. Streaming quality depends on network stability, latency and the service’s support for that title, so it should not be confused with installing a Windows game on the SSD.
Xbox Remote Play
Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox console to another device. The ASUS page distinguishes this from Cloud Gaming: Remote Play uses the games installed on your Xbox, while Cloud Gaming is a catalog-based streaming service that requires Game Pass membership. Remote Play therefore does not turn a handheld into a self-contained Xbox; it relies on the console being configured and available to stream.
Before buying, write down the games you actually play and mark each one as native Windows, Cloud Gaming or Remote Play. A library that depends on Remote Play may make an Xbox console a necessary part of the setup, while a library of PC-only titles favors the handheld.
Performance, refresh rate and battery expectations
The base Ally and Ally X are not identical hardware. The Ally X has the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor listed by Xbox, 24GB of faster LPDDR5X-8000 memory and a 1TB SSD; the base Ally uses Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB LPDDR5-6400 and a 512GB SSD. Those differences provide a rational reason to consider the X for demanding PC games or a larger local library, but the cited product pages do not provide controlled, same-game benchmarks against either Xbox console.
A 120Hz panel describes the display’s refresh capability, not a guaranteed 120 frames per second in every game. Frame rate depends on the game, resolution, graphics settings, power mode and thermal conditions. The X20 adds a 7.4-inch 1080p OLED panel at 120Hz, but the available specification page does not establish a direct performance ranking between X20 and the other Ally models.
Do not select a handheld on the assumption that its processor name or refresh rate makes it equivalent to a Series S or Series X. These are different platforms with different operating systems, power envelopes and game builds. No independent, same-game benchmark or representative battery test is established for this comparison. Battery life will vary with game load, screen brightness, refresh mode, wireless connections and the chosen power profile.

Storage and accessories affect the real experience
Storage is easy to underestimate. A 512GB SSD on the base Ally and a 1TB SSD on the Ally X and X20 are nominal capacities; the operating system and updates consume part of the usable space. Large PC installations, shader caches and multiple storefronts can fill a handheld sooner than a small console library.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteXbox’s handheld page lists microSD cards and an Ally case among the accessories. Treat those as model-specific additions rather than universal purchases: verify the exact Ally or X20 compatibility, card capacity support and regional bundle before ordering. A case protects a portable device during travel, while removable storage can help with less frequently played games, but neither replaces checking actual free space and game requirements.
An Xbox console normally needs fewer accessories to begin playing on a TV. A handheld may need a charger while travelling and, if you want a larger display, a compatible dock, hub or video adapter. The handheld can connect to an external screen with suitable accessories, but external-screen use is an expansion of its portable design rather than its main purpose.
Prices and availability: use the listing, not an old comparison chart
When accessed, Microsoft’s U.S. Store displayed the following Xbox prices:
| Listing family | Displayed U.S. price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S, listed configuration | $499.99 | Price shown on Microsoft’s U.S. store page; configuration and stock can change. |
| Xbox Series S, 1TB configuration | $599.99 | U.S. listing snapshot, not a guaranteed worldwide MSRP. |
| Xbox Series X, listed configurations | $749.99 and $799.99 | Two Series X prices displayed on the same U.S. page; verify the exact SKU and included features. |
These figures are retail-listing snapshots, not stable global prices. Taxes, delivery, bundles, refurbished status, currency conversion and local warranty terms can change the amount you pay. Microsoft’s page is the appropriate place to verify a U.S. console configuration immediately before purchase.

The cited Xbox handheld page identifies models and specifications but does not establish a single worldwide street price. Xbox directs shoppers toward retailers for handheld pricing and availability. For a handheld purchase, compare the exact model name, memory, storage, display, warranty and included charger in your country rather than converting a U.S. expectation into a local budget.
How to set up each option
Xbox console setup
- Confirm the exact Series S or Series X configuration, storage capacity and whether the listing is new or refurbished.
- Connect the console to the television or monitor, attach power and pair the controller.
- Complete the on-screen account and network setup, then install system updates before downloading a large game.
- Check the game’s edition and storage requirement. If your title is available through more than one route, decide whether local installation, Cloud Gaming or Remote Play best fits your connection and hardware.
- Leave enough free storage for updates rather than filling the drive with rarely played titles.
ROG Xbox Ally setup
- Verify that the box contains the model you intended: base Ally, Ally X or X20. The names imply different hardware, and the X20’s complete specification should be confirmed from the regional listing.
- Complete Windows 11 Home’s first-run account, network and update steps. Keep the device connected to power during major updates.
- Sign in to the Xbox experience and install the launchers or storefronts required by your library. Windows allows several storefronts, but each can have its own account, update process and save-data behavior.
- Install one representative game first. Test controller recognition, text readability, graphics presets, frame pacing and suspend/resume behavior before filling the SSD.
- Set a brightness, refresh-rate and power profile that suits the location where you will play. A portable profile that maximizes battery life will not necessarily match a plugged-in profile intended for higher performance.
- If you plan to use a television or monitor, test the required dock, hub or adapter before travelling. Keep the built-in controls available for portable sessions even when an external display is connected.
Choosing within each family
Series S or Series X
Start with Series S if the lower-tier listing, digital-only approach and available storage match your library and display. Consider Series X when the specific configuration, storage requirement or performance target justifies its higher listing price. Because the store page contains multiple Series X configurations, compare the individual SKU rather than assuming every Series X has the same drive or capacity.

- Gaming Resolution: 1440p; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
The decisive question is not simply “S versus X.” Ask how many games you keep installed, whether you need the features of the particular Series X listing and whether the price difference is acceptable in your region after tax and delivery.
Base Ally, Ally X or X20
The base Ally is the entry point into the Windows handheld format: Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB LPDDR5-6400 and 512GB SSD. Ally X moves to Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 and 1TB SSD, which is the clearer choice when the listed memory and storage headroom matter to your PC library. X20 is distinguished on Xbox’s page by its larger 7.4-inch OLED 1080p 120Hz display and 1TB storage; obtain the complete regional specification before comparing it with Ally X on processor or memory.

Do not pay for the highest model solely because the name sounds newer. Choose the specification that addresses a concrete need: more local storage, more memory, the listed processor, or the OLED screen. Without controlled benchmarks and battery measurements, a model name alone cannot establish a universal winner.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every Xbox game runs natively on the handheld
Some games have Windows editions, some are available through Cloud Gaming, and Remote Play streams from an Xbox console. Verify the route for each important title instead of treating the Xbox badge as a guarantee of native installation.
Reading 120Hz as a performance promise
The display can refresh up to 120Hz under supported conditions; it does not force a game to render at 120 frames per second. Use in-game performance information and realistic graphics settings rather than the panel specification alone.
Using a one-time price as a permanent budget
The Xbox figures above are U.S. listing snapshots. Handheld prices are retailer- and region-dependent. Recheck stock, taxes, warranty and the exact SKU on the day you buy.
Ignoring Windows friction
Windows enables storefronts, applications and mods, but it can also require multiple accounts, launcher updates, compatibility settings and occasional troubleshooting. If you want an appliance that is ready for a short living-room session, that trade-off may outweigh the handheld’s flexibility.
Planning around an untested battery claim
Battery runtime changes with the game and settings. Carry the appropriate charger and test your own typical game before relying on a handheld for long travel. No single runtime figure should be applied to every Ally model or title.
A practical buying checklist
- List the three games you play most and identify their native Windows, Cloud Gaming and Remote Play options.
- Decide whether your primary screen is a television or the device’s integrated display.
- Set a local, tax-inclusive budget and check live listings rather than archived prices.
- For Xbox, compare Series S and Series X storage and the exact configuration shown by the seller.
- For a handheld, compare processor, memory, SSD, display and included accessories for the exact Ally or X20 SKU.
- Allow for a charger, protective case, microSD card or display adapter only after confirming model compatibility.
- Reserve free storage for updates and avoid buying more hardware based only on a 120Hz specification.
- For a specific game, confirm controller support, launcher requirements, anti-cheat restrictions and the intended play route before purchase.
Verdict
An Xbox console is the safer choice for a TV-first player who values predictable console operation and does not need Windows software. A ROG Xbox Ally handheld is the more capable format for portable gaming and PC-style freedom, provided you accept Windows setup and title-by-title compatibility checks. The right purchase is the model that matches your primary screen, game-access route, storage needs and local price—not the one with the most impressive product name.
