Choose an Xbox console if you want to use Xbox Cloud Gaming on a supported console; choose a PS5 for PlayStation games and Sony’s own cloud streaming of eligible PS5 titles. Microsoft does not list PS5 as a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming device. PS5 owners can stream selected games through PlayStation Plus Premium, but that is a separate Sony service—not Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Can you play Xbox Cloud Gaming on PS5?
Not through an officially supported PS5 device path. Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming device information lists supported devices but does not include PS5. Microsoft’s December 19, 2025 setup guide identifies Xbox One and later among the supported Xbox consoles. That means PS5 is not an officially listed endpoint; it does not establish whether any unofficial workaround might function, and it should not be treated as reliable or supported.
An Xbox controller or Game Pass subscription does not change the device-support status. If you want Xbox Cloud Gaming on a console, an Xbox console is the supported route. Microsoft also supports cloud gaming on other listed devices, so an Xbox console is not required for every way to access the service.

What cloud gaming does PS5 support?
PS5 has Sony’s separate Cloud Streaming service for PlayStation Plus Premium members. It streams selected PS5 games, including eligible titles from selected PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog selections, selected digital games, and select free-to-play titles. Availability depends on the game and region. Sony says eligible games can be started without downloading them or freeing console storage; see Sony’s PS5 Cloud Streaming details for current eligibility.

This is a meaningful option if you want to play selected PlayStation games through Sony’s service. It does not provide access to the Xbox Cloud Gaming catalog.
How the requirements compare
| Requirement | Xbox Cloud Gaming | PS5 Cloud Streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription or account | An eligible Game Pass plan is required for console cloud gaming. Select free-to-play games can be accessed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. See Microsoft’s current service details. | PlayStation Plus Premium membership is required. See Sony’s service details. |
| Device and game | A supported device and supported game are required. Xbox One and later are identified in the Xbox Wire setup guide; check Microsoft’s current device list because support can change. | A PS5 and an eligible, selected game are required; catalog and regional availability vary. See Sony’s current eligibility information. |
| Connection guidance | Microsoft says best performance is achieved at 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs, and tablets. It recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. These are Microsoft’s service guidelines, not a head-to-head test. See Xbox Cloud Gaming. | Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum to establish a session. It recommends 13 Mbps for 720p, 23 Mbps for 1080p, 38 Mbps for 1440p, and 52 Mbps for 2160p. These are Sony’s stated recommendations, not a controlled comparison with Xbox. See PS5 Cloud Streaming. |
| Controller | A compatible controller is required unless the specific game supports touch controls. Check the game and device requirements on Microsoft’s service page. | Consult Sony’s current game and service requirements for the title you want to stream; the cited service page does not state a universal controller exception. See Sony’s service page. |
The connection figures come from each company’s own service guidance. They do not prove that one service has lower latency, better image quality, or more stable play. Actual streaming depends on connection quality, location, device, and the game. Microsoft also notes that streamed games may have limitations such as reduced resolution, audio-output restrictions, or cloud-save-only storage.

Which option fits your situation?
Choose Xbox console hardware for Xbox Cloud Gaming on a console
If Xbox Cloud Gaming on a console is the priority, choose Xbox hardware such as an Xbox Series X, subject to current model availability in your region. It is the supported console path for Microsoft’s service. Check the current device, game, plan, and regional requirements on Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose or keep PS5 for PlayStation games and Sony streaming
If the games you want are on PS5 or you value Sony’s ecosystem, PS5 is the direct fit. PlayStation Plus Premium adds streaming for selected eligible PS5 games; it is not a substitute for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Confirm that the specific game is available for streaming in your region on Sony’s current service page.

If you own only a PS5 and want Xbox games
Do not buy a PS5 expecting it to become an officially supported Xbox Cloud Gaming device. Consider a supported Xbox console or another device Microsoft currently lists for cloud gaming. Xbox Wire’s setup guide describes apps on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, gaming handhelds, smart TVs and streaming devices, and Meta Quest; it describes browser access for macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android, ChromeOS, and Steam Deck. Because device support changes, use Microsoft’s current device list before choosing another endpoint.

What to check before deciding
- Games: Check the exact titles you want, not just the size of a service catalog. Xbox and PlayStation game availability varies by title and region.
- Access and plan: Verify the required subscription, eligible device, and regional availability for each game and service.
- Connection: Compare your home or mobile connection with the relevant provider’s guidance, while remembering that speed figures alone do not establish stream quality.
- Local play: Decide whether you also want to install and play games on the console itself, rather than relying on streaming.
