The Xbox app for PC is software; PC Game Pass is a subscription. The app is a Windows hub for finding, downloading, launching and organizing games. PC Game Pass is an entitlement that lets you play the eligible PC games included in Microsoft’s catalog while your subscription and the individual title’s availability remain valid. You can use the app with games you bought or installed from supported PC storefronts without subscribing to PC Game Pass.
The short answer: an app and a subscription are different products
Think of the Xbox app as the control panel and PC Game Pass as one source of game access. Installing the app does not automatically give you the Game Pass catalog. Subscribing to PC Game Pass does not mean the app is the only way to obtain or launch PC games.

This distinction prevents the most common misunderstanding: the app is not a free version of Game Pass, and Game Pass is not the name of the app.
What the Xbox app for PC actually does
Microsoft describes the Xbox PC app as a place to browse and download Game Pass games, launch games, connect with friends and bring together Xbox, Game Pass and installed games from other PC storefronts. Its value is organization and access to the Windows gaming ecosystem, regardless of whether a particular game came from a subscription, a purchase or another supported service.

Browsing and downloading
When you have PC Game Pass, the app is a convenient catalog interface: you can discover eligible titles and start their downloads from the app. A game shown in the catalog is not necessarily available to every PC. The title still has to be offered in your region, remain in the catalog and support your Windows hardware and software.
Launching and organizing games
The app can act as a single library view for games you have installed. Microsoft’s announcements support displaying installed games from other PC services in that library and launching them there. The underlying ownership, updates, cloud saves, account settings and purchase functions of those services still belong to the original storefront or publisher. Treat the Xbox app as an aggregator and launcher, not as a replacement store for every game.
Friends and Xbox-related activity
Social features are part of the app’s purpose. You can use it to connect with friends alongside the library and catalog functions. Those social tools do not change whether a game is owned outright or supplied through PC Game Pass.
What PC Game Pass provides
PC Game Pass is the access layer. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules state that PC Game Pass can be used on compatible Windows devices, subject to the subscription terms, catalog availability and the compatibility of each title.
Access is conditional, not permanent ownership
A game installed through the catalog remains tied to the subscription entitlement. If the subscription ends, or a title leaves the catalog, the subscription-based right to play can end even though files remain on the PC. Buying the game separately is a different entitlement from having it installed through Game Pass.

The catalog can change
Game availability is not a fixed list. Titles can be added or removed, and regional availability can differ. Before subscribing for one specific game, check that title in the current catalog for your country and confirm the game’s PC requirements. Microsoft’s official rules describe the governing terms, but the retrieved material does not establish a permanent catalog or a universal set of benefits.
It does not replace the app
You can subscribe to PC Game Pass and use the Xbox app to manage the included games, but the subscription itself is not the library interface. Conversely, you can have the app installed with no subscription and still use it for games you purchased or installed from supported services.

Yes. Microsoft says the Xbox PC app can manage purchased games, and its library can include installed games from other storefronts. Opening, browsing and organizing that library does not require a PC Game Pass subscription.
What you can do without subscribing
- Use the app as a hub for eligible games you bought.
- View supported games already installed through another PC storefront.
- Launch those installed games from the aggregated library when the app supports that integration.
- Use the app’s browsing and social functions that are available independently of catalog entitlement.
What you cannot assume
- Seeing a game in the app means you own it or can play it.
- An installed game from another storefront has moved to Microsoft’s store or account system.
- The app alone unlocks PC Game Pass catalog titles.
If a title’s access is supplied by PC Game Pass, you need the subscription (or another valid ownership entitlement) to play it. The app is still useful for organizing the rest of your PC library.
Can you play games you own in the Xbox app?
Often, yes, when the game is purchased through a supported PC source or is already installed from one. Microsoft’s product descriptions and Xbox Wire announcement describe a unified library that can include owned and installed games from other PC storefronts.

What “play in the app” means
For a game from another storefront, the Xbox app may provide the library entry and launch action while the original service handles ownership verification, updates, achievements or account functions. You may still need that storefront’s client to be installed and signed in. The Xbox app’s aggregation does not transfer your license or create a second copy of the purchase.

Why a game might not appear
Library aggregation depends on supported integrations and on the game being installed or recognized correctly. A title can be missing if its storefront is not supported, the installation is not detected, the required client is unavailable or the game does not meet the app’s integration rules. The evidence does not establish that every PC storefront or every game will appear.
How the app and subscription work together
The following sequence shows the practical relationship without treating the two products as interchangeable:
- Install or open the Xbox app for PC. The app is the management interface; this step does not grant catalog access.
- Sign in with the account that owns your games or subscription. Entitlements are account-based, so using a different account can make a purchased or subscribed title appear unavailable.
- Review the library. You may see owned games, installed games from supported storefronts and games available through an active PC Game Pass subscription.
- Check the source of access for each title. A purchased game uses its purchase entitlement; a catalog game uses the subscription; a game from another storefront uses that service’s account and license.
- Confirm compatibility before downloading. Windows support, hardware requirements and the title’s own compatibility determine whether installation and play are possible.
- Launch through the appropriate service when prompted. A game aggregated from another storefront may still open that storefront’s client for sign-in, updates or license checks.
This model explains why one library can contain games with different ownership and launch requirements.
Compatibility, Windows editions and Arm-based PCs
Compatibility is a title-by-title question. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules refer to compatible Windows devices, and a Game Pass entitlement does not override a game’s processor, graphics, memory or operating-system requirements. A catalog entry should therefore be treated as access permission, not as a guarantee that the game runs on every Windows PC.

The dated Arm compatibility figure
In an announcement published January 21, 2026, Microsoft said the Xbox app was available on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs and that more than 85% of the Game Pass catalog was compatible with Arm-based Windows 11 PCs. That is Microsoft’s catalog-compatibility figure at the time of the announcement, not a promise that every Game Pass title works on every Arm device. Compatibility can also depend on the individual game, drivers, peripherals and the specific Arm-based PC.
What to check on an Arm Windows 11 PC
- Whether the Xbox app supports your Windows 11 Arm installation.
- Whether the particular Game Pass title is included in the compatible portion of the catalog.
- Whether the game’s publisher lists support for your processor architecture and required peripherals.
- Whether performance or feature limitations apply even when a title installs.
The 85% figure is useful for setting expectations about the catalog as a whole, but it should not be used to infer compatibility for a named game without checking that game.

The decision is not “which app is better.” You are deciding whether the subscription adds enough access to the library you already manage with the app.
Choose the app without a subscription when
- You mainly want one place to see and launch games you already own.
- Your purchases are spread across supported PC storefronts and you value a consolidated library view.
- You do not need the current Game Pass catalog to play the games on your list.
Consider PC Game Pass when
- You want to play multiple eligible catalog titles without buying each one separately.
- The games you want are currently included in the PC catalog for your country.
- Your Windows PC meets the requirements for those specific games.
- You accept that catalog membership and subscription terms can change.
Check before subscribing
- Look up each target game in Microsoft’s current regional PC Game Pass catalog.
- Confirm that the listing is for the PC version rather than a console-only entitlement.
- Read the game’s Windows requirements and check your hardware.
- Review the current price, tier name, billing interval and included benefits for your country on Microsoft’s live plan page.
- Confirm which account will receive the subscription and whether it is the account used in the Xbox app.
The official material available for this comparison does not establish current country-specific prices, a complete tier-by-tier benefit list or a permanent catalog. Those details should be checked immediately before purchase because they can change by region and date.

Common misunderstandings and fixes
“I installed the Xbox app, so why can’t I play every game?”
The app is software, not an automatic license. Check whether the game is owned, included in your active PC Game Pass subscription or tied to another storefront account. If none of those applies, the app cannot grant access by itself.

“A game appears in my library, but it asks me to buy it.”
The library can show games from different sources. Verify the account and the source of the listing. A purchased game may belong to another account or storefront, while a catalog game may have left the subscription or require an active plan.
“Can the Xbox app replace my other launcher?”
No broad replacement claim is supported. Microsoft says installed games from supported services can be brought into the Xbox app’s library and launched there. The original service may still be required for purchase, account management, updates or license verification.
“Does Game Pass guarantee that a game runs on my PC?”
No. Subscription access and technical compatibility are separate checks. Use the game’s requirements and the compatibility information for your Windows edition and hardware.

Game Pass availability is governed by regional licensing and catalog terms. A title can be present in one country and absent in another, or its availability can change over time. Check the live regional listing rather than relying on an older list.
A simple decision rule
If your question is “Where do I organize and launch my PC games?”, the answer is the Xbox app. If your question is “How do I get access to this set of eligible PC games without purchasing each title individually?”, PC Game Pass may be the answer, provided the games are currently included and compatible with your PC. Many players use both: the app as the interface and the subscription as one source of games.
