Yes—Xbox 360 software modifications now include a project that describes itself as a persistent softmod, but it works only on certain motherboard revisions. Xbox360PeerPressure lists Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon, Jasper, and Trinity as supported; it excludes Corona and Winchester. It also carries meaningful data-loss and no-boot risks, so “softmod” does not mean risk-free or compatible with every console.
What does “20 years after launch” mean?
The Xbox 360 launched in 2005, making 2025 its 20th anniversary year. That is the anniversary behind the headline—not evidence that Xbox360PeerPressure itself was released on the anniversary date. The available project documentation does not establish its exact public release date. Xbox 360 launch history
Does Xbox 360 have a persistent softmod?
Xbox360PeerPressure documents a software-based modification intended to persist, unlike an exploit that must be triggered again after each reboot. Its stated support is limited to five motherboard revisions, and setup modifies both the console’s NAND image and the hard drive’s security sectors. The project warns that these changes can cause data loss or prevent the console from booting. Xbox360PeerPressure documentation

Supported and excluded motherboard revisions
| Revision | Peer Pressure status |
|---|---|
| Xenon | Supported |
| Zephyr | Supported |
| Falcon | Supported |
| Jasper | Supported |
| Trinity | Supported |
| Corona | Excluded; the project cites a hardware-level southbridge fix |
| Winchester | Excluded; the project cites a hardware-level southbridge fix |
Check the console’s motherboard revision against the project’s current compatibility documentation before considering the procedure. A retail name or general Xbox 360 model label alone is not enough to establish that a particular unit is supported.

What does the hard-drive requirement involve?
Peer Pressure requires a hard drive and recommends a mechanical 2.5-inch drive. Its documentation explains that the exploit relies on a timing-sensitive race while reading the drive’s security sectors; some SSDs may work, but the project does not recommend them. It does not certify a specific retail drive model. If sourcing a drive, verify the connector and physical fit for the console, as well as the console revision, rather than assuming any “2.5 inch SATA hard drive for Xbox 360” will work. How is Peer Pressure different from Bad Update?
Bad Update is a separate, earlier software-only exploit. Its documentation says the hacked state is not persistent: rebooting or powering off ends it, and the exploit must be triggered again. It is documented for dashboard version 17559 and described by its author as a proof of concept, not an RGH replacement. Peer Pressure, by contrast, presents itself as persistent for supported revisions and changes NAND and HDD security data.

What are the risks before attempting a softmod?
Peer Pressure’s warning is consequential: its process modifies NAND and HDD security sectors, and the project says this can cause data loss or prevent booting. It notes that recovery may require a hardware NAND flasher. This is not merely a temporary software toggle, and anyone unwilling or unable to handle a failed boot should not treat the procedure as a low-risk experiment.
