To limit who sees your posts on X (formerly Twitter), turn on Protect your posts; to reduce account discovery, separately disable email and phone discoverability and review uploaded contacts. Then check location, personalization, tagging, and sign-in security. None of these controls makes everything you share confidential: followers can copy protected posts, and content shared before a setting change may persist.
What X privacy settings can—and cannot—control
X posts are public by default, so anyone can view them, including people who do not have an account. Privacy settings let you narrow the audience, limit some account suggestions, manage certain personalization and sharing uses, and control what location information accompanies posts. They do not guarantee secrecy or stop every form of data processing.
X’s Help Center advises: “Don’t post information you consider to be private, and be thoughtful about when you want to publicly share your location.” See How to protect your personal information.

How to make your X account private by protecting posts
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Go to Privacy and safety → Audience and tagging.
- Turn on Protect your posts.
X’s app and web labels or layout may vary slightly; look for the equivalent audience control if the path differs. With protection on, only your followers can see protected posts, and you decide whether to approve new follow requests. People who already followed you remain followers unless you block them. X’s instructions are in How to protect and unprotect your Posts.

What protected posts still expose
Protected posts are not shown in third-party search engines, and on X they are searchable only by you and your followers. X disables its repost controls for protected posts. Those limits do not prevent a follower from taking a screenshot, copying text, or redistributing a link or media. X states, “Your followers may still capture images of your posts and share them.” Authorized third-party applications may also be able to access protected posts. When you switch from public to protected, your old posts stop appearing publicly on X and in public X search, but people may already have seen or copied them. Copies outside X are not controlled by the setting, and X cannot remove content from other websites. If you later unprotect posts, those posts become public again. Before changing back, review pending follow requests: X says they are not accepted automatically.

Stop people finding you by phone number or email
Email and phone discoverability are separate from whether those details appear on your public profile. In Privacy and safety, open Discoverability and contacts and review both options for allowing people to find your account by email address and phone number. Turning these off also means X will not use address-book contacts you uploaded to suggest your account to others, according to X’s Email and phone discoverability settings.

Enabling discoverability does not, by itself, publicly display your email address or phone number. The control concerns matching and suggestions.

Review personalization and data controls
Under Privacy and safety, open Personalization and data (X also provides a desktop settings page). X describes these controls as covering personalization and sharing non-public information with certain business partners, and provides a master control. The signed-in preferences apply across devices where you are logged into that account. Preferences for a logged-out user apply only to the current browser while logged out. See Personalization and data settings.
Switching off the master control should not be read as ending all data collection or processing, stopping all advertising uses, or undoing information already shared; X’s description does not support those broader promises.

Turn off location on X and check each post
Post location is off by default and must be opted into. You can attach a chosen place label to a post. After enabling location posting, X says the next post automatically includes a general location label, so inspect the composer before publishing. If the in-app camera’s precise-location option is enabled, a photo or video post can include both the selected label and the device’s precise latitude and longitude—which may be more specific than the visible label.

- Check device or browser location permissions and any third-party apps you use to post.
- If needed, use X’s control for deleting past location data from displaying in posts.

Secure sign-in so privacy settings stay yours
Use a strong password that you do not reuse on other sites, and enable two-factor authentication (2FA). X documents authentication-app codes and physical security keys as secondary sign-in methods. A security key is an option, not a requirement or a particular brand recommendation. Keep access to your chosen authenticator or key and recovery method so losing a device does not lock you out.
X ended SMS 2FA support for non-Premium subscribers effective 20 March 2023. Premium SMS availability may vary by country and carrier, and available methods can change; check the options shown in your account’s security settings rather than relying on an old blanket claim. Choose settings for the privacy you need

For maximum audience restriction, protecting posts and disabling contact discoverability are reasonable starting points. If public reach matters more, you can keep posts public while still reviewing location, tagging, personalization, and sign-in security individually.
