X remains a visible place for AI-industry news, arguments and live technology shows, but the available evidence does not establish that its discussions are more interesting than those on rival platforms. Its strongest case is concentration: people tracking AI can encounter launches, research and industry figures in one public feed. That does not mean X invented or revived the community, or that its reach and engagement prove superior discussion.
What X offers people following AI
A September 10, 2026 Axios report describes a recognizable stream of AI activity on X: model releases, research papers, demos, hiring news, executive moves and technical arguments. It also points to live technology shows and high-profile industry figures using the platform for announcements. For a reader who wants to follow fast-moving AI news and see public exchanges among people in the industry, that activity makes X a useful venue.
But visibility is not the same as representativeness. Axios reports that AI enthusiasts are a small subset of X’s overall audience, and that Threads is competing for everyday users. The report also notes that researchers and technology figures were influential on Twitter before Elon Musk acquired it. X may have retained a lively AI scene under Musk, but the evidence does not support crediting his ownership with creating that scene.
Public AI interactions are not necessarily widely seen
A 2026 study, “Grok in the Wild,” analyzed 41,735 public interactions with Grok on X. The researchers found that Grok responded to 62% of sampled requests, 51% of those requests were in English, and half of the sampled responses had 20 or fewer views after 48 hours. In the study, Grok most often acted as an information provider, but it also served as a truth arbiter, advocate, adversary and dispute mediator. These results describe the study’s sample, not all Grok use or the reach of every AI conversation on X.

How X’s reach compares with what the numbers actually measure
Two different measures help explain why claims about X’s standing can seem to conflict. Similarweb estimates reported by Axios put Threads ahead of X in daily active mobile users in January 2026. Separately, the Reuters Institute’s 2025 Digital News Report found that X had not lost aggregate weekly news reach across its 12-country sample. That report’s US survey found an increase in weekly use for news. One measure concerns estimated daily mobile activity; the other concerns whether adults used a platform for news in the previous week.

The Reuters Institute also described a rightward shift in X’s US news audience after Musk’s takeover, with similar audience trends in the UK. These findings help characterize who uses X for news and how that audience has changed; they do not tell us whether conversations are more interesting than those elsewhere.

Why the For You feed affects what discussion feels like
X’s Help Center says recommendations draw on multiple signals, including chosen interests, followed accounts and topics, likes, reposts, shares, replies, watched media and content popular in a user’s network. It also says For You can include posts from accounts a user does not follow. That description explains why the feed may expose someone to unfamiliar voices and topics, but it is the platform’s account of its recommendation system, not an independent audit of its behavior.

In a randomized field experiment involving active US X users in 2023, researchers assigned participants to algorithmic or chronological feeds for seven weeks. Switching to the algorithmic feed shifted attitudes on policies and current political news toward more conservative positions, without significantly changing polarization or partisanship. That is a finding about specified participants, an intervention and measured political outcomes—not a general assessment of discussion quality or of every topic on X.

What research can—and cannot—say about discussion quality
Engagement is not a dependable stand-in for quality or interest. A 2025 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences study examined more than 10 million news-link posts shared during January 2024 across X, Bluesky, Truth Social, Gab, GETTR, Mastodon and LinkedIn. Within a given user’s posts, lower-quality news links received higher average engagement across all the platforms studied. At the same time, higher-quality news was more prevalent and received more total engagement across posts. The researchers reported that the within-user pattern persisted after accounting for differences between posters and appeared even without ranking algorithms. Because the analysis concerned news links from one month, it should not be generalized to every topic or treated as a ranking of platforms’ conversations.
That distinction matters when describing X as a place for “interesting” discussion. The available studies measure outcomes such as reach, views, engagement, news quality and political attitudes. They do not directly compare how interesting people find conversations on X, Threads or Bluesky. A platform can host prominent AI debates, attract views, or retain news reach without proving that its discussions are more informative, thoughtful or enjoyable.

Where AI discussion happens depends on what you want from it
If your priority is seeing industry announcements, AI research circulate quickly, or public exchanges among prominent technology figures, X has a visible scene and a recommendation feed that can surface posts beyond accounts you follow. If you are choosing a platform based on total mobile audience, the January 2026 Similarweb estimates reported by Axios favored Threads. If you want to judge conversation quality, neither audience size nor engagement totals answer the question on their own; the cited research offers no like-for-like measure of subjective interest across platforms.
A March 2026 NYU working paper offers a separate lens on how online discussion might change: in two preregistered online experiments using simulated, interactive social-media environments, AI-generated summaries increased comment quality without systematically increasing toxicity or negative affect. They also reduced engagement with threads and made comments more similar to the summaries. These experiments were not conducted on X, so they are context about possible trade-offs from AI summaries, not evidence about X’s real-world discussion quality.
