Yes. You can use a Wyze camera without a paid subscription for live viewing, motion and sound alerts, and—on compatible cameras with a microSD card—local recording. The key limitation is cloud video: without a plan, the Events tab shows thumbnails rather than saved event clips.
What Wyze features work without a subscription?
Wyze’s Cam Plus overview, dated January 30, 2026, lists these features for users without a paid camera plan:
- Live streaming in the Wyze app.
- Motion and sound alerts, plus alarm sound detections.
- Image-only cloud storage.
- Timelapse recording.
- 24/7 local recording on a compatible camera with an installed microSD card.
These are distinct from cloud event-video storage. Wyze says the Events tab remains available to nonsubscribers, but it displays thumbnails rather than event videos. A thumbnail can help identify that an event occurred; it is not a saved cloud clip. See Wyze’s Events-tab explanation.

In-app live streaming is included among the free features Wyze lists. Computer access through Wyze Web View has a separate limit: according to Wyze’s page updated September 30, 2026, a nonsubscriber can choose one camera tile to stream during the current month, then choose a camera again at the start of the next month. This Web View restriction does not describe live viewing in the mobile app. Details are in Wyze Web View support.

What does the Monitoring tab do without a plan?
Wyze says app users can open the Monitoring tab and use multi-camera viewing without a subscription. The Disarmed, Home, and Away modes are visible there, but arming or disarming them requires Cam Unlimited. Wyze explains the distinction in its Monitoring tab support article.
How to record locally without paying
Wyze says a camera with a microSD slot can record continuously or record events only without a subscription when a compatible card is installed and local recording is enabled. Its local-recording guide, updated May 14, 2026, states: “A feature on every Wyze Cam with a microSD slot is 24/7 local recording, which gives you Continuous or Events Only recording with no subscription required.” That applies only to cameras with a slot and a compatible card. Wyze also says local recording can continue while the camera is offline.

- Check the exact camera model for a microSD slot and local-recording support before buying a card.
- Insert a compatible card, then open the camera’s settings in the Wyze app and go to Advanced Settings.
- Enable local recording and choose continuous recording or Events Only, depending on the options available for that model.
- Review footage from the card when you need it. Local recordings are not cloud event clips, and finding a particular moment can require manually searching the footage.
Compatibility is not universal. Wyze says Battery Cam Pro, Wyze Video Doorbell, and Wyze Video Doorbell Pro do not support local recording. Its comparison page also says Wyze Cam Outdoor v1/v2 and Battery Cam Pro do not support 24/7 continuous recording. Check the listing for your precise model rather than assuming that a card will work.
Card capacity and retention are not universal
Wyze’s comparison page gives an example of up to four days on a 32 GB microSD card, compared with 14 days of Cam Plus rollover cloud storage. These are Wyze’s stated examples, not guaranteed retention for every camera or setting. Local retention depends on factors such as card capacity and recording settings; when card storage fills, older footage may be overwritten.

A separate Wyze guide for Cam v1/v2 and Pan describes Class 10 cards, FAT32 support for 8, 16, and 32 GB, and exFAT support for 64, 128, and 256 GB. Wyze says it tested those covered models up to 256 GB and estimates roughly two to three weeks of playback on a 256 GB card. This is legacy, model-specific guidance—not a format or capacity recommendation for every current Wyze camera.
What a subscription adds
Wyze’s Cam Plus overview lists AI detections for people, pets, vehicles, packages, and sounds; AI event recordings for motion and sound events; 14 days of rollover video cloud storage; and Web View access. Its comparison with microSD recording is a choice between cloud event clips and locally stored footage that may need manual review. Cloud history and card retention are not directly interchangeable guarantees.

There is also model-specific behavior for Wyze Cam v3. Wyze says free users need an installed microSD card for uninterrupted continuous recording. Its Cam v3 support page describes a five-minute cooldown between similar event videos under a service-plan configuration unless settings are changed; Cam Plus and higher plans remove that cooldown and allow longer recording while motion continues. Do not assume this cooldown behavior applies to every Wyze camera.

A compatible microSD card is the relevant accessory if you want local footage and accept manual review. A plan is more relevant if you want cloud event clips, AI detections, or the stated cloud-video history. Neither storage approach is categorically better: the useful choice depends on where you want footage stored and how you want to find it.
