Choose Crota’s End if you are starting Destiny 2 or teaching a new six-person team. It is the reprised raid available in the Destiny 2 ecosystem, has a consistent Chalice, Oversoul and sword vocabulary, and offers documented Destiny 2 rewards and challenge progression.
Wrath of the Machine is not a Destiny 2 raid. It is a Destiny 1 raid from Rise of Iron. Choose it when your priority is SIVA-era atmosphere, the original Rise of Iron experience or access to Destiny 1—not the most practical first raid for a current Destiny 2 player.

The platform difference decides the comparison
The title can create a misleading premise: these are not two raids inside the same game. Bungie’s 2023 Showcase coverage describes Crota’s End as a reprised raid for Destiny 2. Bungie’s legacy-support information lists Wrath of the Machine among Destiny 1 raid activities, tied to the Rise of Iron expansion.
That distinction affects everything a first-time player cares about: which game you must install, what character and gear progression you are using, where you find teammates, and whether the raid fits a current Destiny 2 learning path. You cannot launch Wrath of the Machine from Destiny 2. To play it, you need access to Destiny 1 and the Rise of Iron content on a supported platform and region.
#1 Best Overall
- From the makers of the acclaimed hit game Destiny, comes the much-anticipated sequel
- An action shooter that takes you on an epic journey across the solar system
- Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion
- To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home
Both activities are six-player raids, and Bungie calls raids “the most emblematic endgame activity in Destiny 2.” The recommendation here is therefore about practical suitability, not an official Bungie difficulty ranking. No authoritative source publishes a measured completion-time, wipe-rate or beginner-difficulty comparison between the two raids.

Why Crota’s End is the better first raid
It keeps your learning inside Destiny 2
If your characters, subclasses, weapons and friends are already in Destiny 2, Crota’s End avoids a game switch. You learn raid communication in the same ecosystem where you are building your current loadouts and finding groups. A team that later tries another Destiny 2 raid can carry forward habits such as assigning jobs, watching shared timers, making concise callouts and recovering after a failed attempt.
Wrath asks you to return to a different title, expansion and progression environment before the raid even begins. That can be worthwhile, but it adds a setup decision that has nothing to do with learning raid fundamentals.

Crota’s End is organized around a recognizable set of ideas: the Chalice of Light, Oversoul-related progression, sword use and repeated transfers of responsibility between players. A new raider still has to learn each encounter, but the same concepts recur rather than being replaced by an entirely new subsystem at every stage.
A community guide describes Crota’s End as friendly for first-time raiders and notes that the Chalice of Light carries through the raid. That is player opinion, not a Bungie-certified rating, but it explains why many teaching groups find the raid’s through-line approachable.
Its rewards provide a clear reason to continue
Bungie’s Crota’s End coverage identifies four encounter names in the armor-loot structure: Abyss, Oversoul Throne Bridge, Ir Yut and Crota, Son of Oryx. The reprised raid also has a documented Necrochasm route. Players who completed Contest Mode could receive the Bottomless Pit quest, while Essence of the Oversoul comes from encounters and Triumphs.
That gives a new team several kinds of progress: learning an encounter, earning armor, pursuing Triumphs and working toward a named weapon quest. You do not have to complete every objective on your first clear, but the structure helps a group decide what to practice next.

What makes Wrath of the Machine different
It is a mechanics-heavy SIVA raid
Wrath’s identity comes from SIVA and the Devil Splicers. Bungie’s mechanics coverage describes a sequence that asks players to collect voltage to power spinners, throw SIVA charges, match elemental cannons to Servitors, survive the moving Siege Engine encounter and use Empowered players to stun Aksis.
Those jobs are individually understandable, but the team must switch between several kinds of responsibility: resource collection, object throwing, elemental matching, movement and timed boss control. That produces more role changes and callout pressure than a new player may expect from a first raid. It does not prove that Wrath is objectively harder—Bungie does not publish a beginner-difficulty score—but it makes the raid less consistent as a first teaching environment.
The setting is the main reason to choose it
If the phrase “SIVA outbreak,” the Devil Splicers and the Rise of Iron setting are what attracted you, Wrath can be the right choice despite the extra friction. Its value is historical and atmospheric as much as mechanical: you are revisiting a Destiny 1 raid in the context for which it was designed.
Players choosing Wrath should verify the platform, region, seller and new-versus-used condition when obtaining a physical copy of Destiny: Rise of Iron. Availability and compatibility are practical prerequisites, not details to leave until raid night.
How the teaching experience differs encounter by encounter
Crota’s End: build one shared mental model
- Start with the repeated vocabulary. Explain what the Chalice represents, how Oversoul-related progression is communicated and when the sword role changes hands.
- Assign one primary responsibility per player. New raiders can first learn a handoff, a pickup or a callout before combining several jobs.
- Keep callouts tied to the raid’s own names. Abyss, Oversoul Throne Bridge, Ir Yut and Crota are the encounter labels used in Bungie’s armor structure, so using those names avoids confusion in a teaching group.
- Add optional objectives after the clear is stable. Triumphs and the Necrochasm path are useful long-term goals, but they should not bury the basic completion plan on a first run.
This approach does not make Crota’s End effortless. It gives learners repeated opportunities to recognize the same kinds of information and gradually take over a larger role.
Wrath of the Machine: prepare players for role changes
- Explain the resource loop before starting. Players should know who is collecting voltage, who is operating the spinners and how the team confirms that power has been supplied.
- Make SIVA-charge handling explicit. Throwing is a discrete job; assign it instead of assuming everyone understands when and where charges are used.
- Identify elemental assignments. Cannon users must match elements to Servitors, so call out the element and the intended target before firing.
- Warn about movement. The Siege Engine encounter tests positioning and survival while the encounter itself moves. Give less experienced players a safe route and a simple regroup signal.
- Reserve a clear stun caller. At Aksis, Empowered players must coordinate the stun. One caller and short, unambiguous timing words are more reliable than several people giving simultaneous instructions.
A group that enjoys switching jobs and reacting to changing spatial problems may prefer this style. A group learning its first raid usually benefits from Crota’s more recognizable through-line.
Access, prerequisites and group formation
For Crota’s End
- Use Destiny 2 and confirm that your account can access the raid activity in the current Destiny 2 ecosystem.
- Bring a six-player team or use a supported group-finding route. Bungie’s Guided Games initiative is intended to connect solo players with guiding clans for selected endgame activities; availability depends on the activity and current service support.
- Before attempting challenge objectives, agree whether the group wants a normal clear, a learning run, a Triumph attempt or a reward-focused run.
- During the 2023 launch Contest Mode, Bungie stated that players needed 1790 Power to be at the cap for all encounters. Treat that number as the documented launch requirement for that event, not as a universal permanent requirement for every later run.
For Wrath of the Machine
- Obtain access to Destiny 1 and the Rise of Iron content on your platform and in your region.
- Confirm that all six players can actually launch the same activity before scheduling a teaching session.
- Use a group familiar with legacy Destiny controls and terminology, or reserve extra time for explaining the older progression and equipment context.
- Decide in advance who will handle voltage, SIVA charges, elemental cannons, movement guidance and Aksis stuns. Rotate jobs only after the first successful explanation.
Neither raid is a good candidate for an unplanned “we have five minutes” session. The team needs a voice channel or equivalent communication method, a shared plan for wipes and enough time to explain a mechanic instead of rushing through it.

Contest Mode, Challenge Mode and what the rewards mean
Crota’s End launched with a 48-hour Contest Mode window. Bungie said that clearing Contest Mode unlocked Challenge Mode and the Superior Swordplay Triumph. Contest Mode was a time-limited launch condition, so do not confuse it with the ordinary requirements of a later teaching run.
The raid’s reward path also includes the Necrochasm quest. Contest Mode players could receive the Bottomless Pit quest, and Essence of the Oversoul is earned through encounters and Triumphs. A new team can therefore separate its goals: learn the encounters first, then return for Triumphs or targeted progress.
Wrath’s appeal is different. The relevant rewards are its original Rise of Iron and Destiny 1 loot, and the cited material does not establish a current Destiny 2 challenge or reward system for it. If your motivation is a modern Destiny 2 collection or progression path, Crota’s End is the only one of these two that directly serves that goal.
Is Crota’s End actually easier?
There is no official, measured answer. Bungie has not published a completion-time comparison, failure rate or beginner ranking for Crota’s End versus Wrath of the Machine.
The practical judgment is that Crota’s End is the easier recommendation for a new Destiny 2 player because it is the correct platform, uses a more consistent set of recurring concepts and has a current reward and challenge framework. That is an editorial assessment supported by the raids’ documented structure and community teaching experience—not a claim that every team will clear Crota faster or with fewer wipes.

Individual results can reverse the recommendation. A Destiny 1 veteran who remembers Wrath’s callouts may find it easier than Crota’s End. Conversely, a player who has never touched Rise of Iron will spend time learning the legacy environment before the raid’s mechanics become the main challenge.
Decision guide for common first-timer situations
| Your situation | Choose | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You play Destiny 2 now and want your first raid | Crota’s End | No game switch; current Destiny 2 progression and rewards |
| Your friends already have a coordinated Destiny 1 group | Wrath of the Machine | Existing experience reduces the cost of learning its role changes |
| You want SIVA, Devil Splicers and Rise of Iron atmosphere | Wrath of the Machine | That is the raid’s defining historical setting |
| You want to pursue Necrochasm and Destiny 2 Triumphs | Crota’s End | Its documented reward path includes Bottomless Pit and Essence of the Oversoul |
| Your team dislikes frequent role changes and complex callouts | Crota’s End | Its repeated Chalice/Oversoul/sword concepts provide a steadier teaching pattern |
| Your team enjoys movement, resource handling and switching jobs | Wrath of the Machine | Its mechanics deliberately combine those demands |
| You have no six-player team | Either, after finding a group | Both are six-player activities; investigate Guided Games or another reputable group-finding route before committing |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling Wrath a Destiny 2 raid
This leads players to search the wrong game, expect current Destiny 2 gear systems and underestimate the need for Rise of Iron access. Treat Wrath as a Destiny 1 activity from the beginning.

Using the 1790 figure as a permanent rule
The 1790 Power statement belongs to Crota’s End’s 2023 launch Contest Mode. It described the cap for all encounters during that event. Verify the requirements shown by the activity you are entering rather than repeating the launch number without its date and mode.
Teaching every optional objective at once
On Crota’s End, a first-time team can become overloaded if the leader explains the clear, Triumph conditions and Necrochasm progress simultaneously. Establish the basic encounter plan, secure a clear and then add optional goals.

“Someone grab the charge” is not a plan when several players are learning. Name the voltage collector, spinner operator, SIVA thrower, cannon user and Empowered stun caller. Rotate only when the group understands why the job matters.
Assuming a community opinion is an official ranking
Guides that call Crota’s End first-time-friendly can be useful teaching evidence, but they are not a Bungie difficulty certification. Set expectations honestly: the raid may be approachable, while individual encounters can still demand practice.
Recommended first-run plan
- Pick Crota’s End for a current Destiny 2 team. Choose Wrath only when the legacy setting is the purpose of the session and everyone can access Destiny 1 with Rise of Iron.
- Fill all six places. Use a guiding clan or another group-finding method if necessary; do not begin with an undefined five-player plan.
- State the objective. Decide whether the session is a clear, a learning run or an optional Triumph attempt.
- Give each player one job. Avoid changing assignments until the team can explain the mechanic back to the leader.
- Use short callouts. Name the object, player or location first; add timing information only when needed.
- Review one failure at a time. Identify the missed handoff, resource, position or timing, change one assignment and retry.
- Separate progression goals. After a clear, schedule a dedicated session for Triumphs, Challenge Mode goals or Necrochasm progress rather than making the first run carry every objective.
Final verdict
For the reader who means “Which raid should I do first in Destiny 2?”, the answer is Crota’s End. It is the Destiny 2 activity in this matchup, its recurring mechanics offer a coherent teaching path, and its documented rewards and challenge systems give a new team useful reasons to return.
Pick Wrath of the Machine when you specifically want the SIVA and Rise of Iron experience and are prepared to play Destiny 1. Its voltage, SIVA-charge, elemental-cannon, Siege Engine and Aksis mechanics can be rewarding for an organized group, but its legacy platform and greater role switching make it a less sensible default for a current Destiny 2 beginner.
