For the Destiny 1 version of Wrath of the Machine, build the team around utility rather than six identical damage characters. A Defender Titan with Weapons of Light, a Nightstalker Hunter for tether and invisibility, and a Stormcaller Warlock for add control form the safest foundation. Equip explosive-round hand cannons or high-impact scout rifles for Shanks and Vandals, high-impact sniper rifles for majors and turrets, and choose your heavy weapon by encounter: Sleeper Simulant or Gjallarhorn for Vosik, Dark-Drinker for Captain control on the Siege Engine and Aksis, and rockets or a machine gun when crowd clearing matters more than precision.

These recommendations apply to the six-player Destiny 1 raid from Rise of Iron, not Destiny 2. Normal Wrath of the Machine launched on September 23, 2016, and Heroic launched on October 18, 2016. The historical recommended Light Levels were 370 for normal and 380 for Heroic.

What Wrath of the Machine loadouts need to accomplish

Wrath of the Machine has three encounters: Vosik, the Siege Engine and Aksis, Archon Prime. Each asks the fireteam to alternate between long-range precision, add control, movement and short damage windows. A loadout that is excellent in one room can be awkward in the next, so carry weapons that cover a job instead of chasing one universal setup.

“Where the Light ends, evolution begins.”

That tagline appears in Destinypedia’s 2016 raid overview, and it captures the raid’s SIVA theme. More practically, the raid rewards teams that divide responsibilities: someone anchors a safe damage position, someone controls lanes, and someone carries the close-range or objective duty.

Recommended subclasses for a six-player team

Subclass composition should give the group a reliable defensive tool, a way to group or weaken enemies, and enough add clear to keep objectives safe. The following setup is a starting point rather than a mandatory six-class roster.

Class and subclass Key setup Best contribution When to switch
Defender Titan Weapons of Light, Bastion, Illuminated Ward of Dawn support, survivability and a damage buff during controlled windows Use Sunbreaker if the team already has sufficient support and needs more add clear
Nightstalker Hunter Black Hole, Light of the Pack and invisibility tools Tether control, orb generation, safe movement and suppression of dangerous groups Use Gunslinger with Celestial Nighthawk when enough Nightstalkers are already covering control
Stormcaller Warlock Chaining and Transcendence-focused tools Rapid add clear, especially when enemies arrive in clustered waves Use Sunsinger when personal survival or recovery is the team’s limiting factor

Defender Titan: the default support choice

Weapons of Light turns a well-placed Ward of Dawn into a team-wide damage tool, while Bastion and Illuminated improve the bubble’s usefulness and durability. Place the Ward where players can step in for the buff without losing sight of the encounter. A second Titan can run Sunbreaker when the roster already has a dependable bubble and the encounter’s problem is enemy volume rather than boss damage.

Nightstalker Hunter: control and movement

Black Hole extends the tether’s reach and duration, and Light of the Pack helps the team create orbs from tethered targets. Invisibility is particularly valuable for runners and for recovering a downed teammate. Nightstalker is the safest default while learning; Gunslinger with Celestial Nighthawk is a sensible damage alternative once the group has enough tethers to handle control.

Stormcaller and Sunsinger Warlocks

Stormcaller’s chaining tools excel when Shanks, Vandals or other adds arrive in groups. Keep the Stormcaller assigned to a lane where chain lightning can remove several targets without pulling the player away from an objective. Sunsinger is the fallback for a player who is dying before the team’s damage checks, because survival and re-entry are more valuable than a theoretical maximum.

Runner considerations

Players carrying objectives or moving between platforms can favor agility once their recovery and defenses are comfortable. Do not trade away survivability merely to move a little faster while learning the raid; a failed run or a death during a carry costs more time than a modest mobility gain saves.

Weapon choices by job

Wrath of the Machine’s Splicer enemies make body-shot reliability unusually important. Shanks have no conventional critical spot, and Vandals can be difficult to hit while moving. Carry one primary for dependable lane work, one special weapon for majors and precision targets, and a heavy weapon chosen for the encounter’s distance and movement.

Weapon slot Recommended type Targets and reason
Primary Explosive-round hand cannon Body shots remain useful against Shanks and Vandals; splash damage helps finish groups
Primary alternative High-impact explosive-round scout rifle Longer range and better ammunition economy when lanes are wide
Special High-impact sniper rifle, such as Ex Machina or Event Horizon Major Shanks, turrets, monitors, the Devil Walker and short damage windows
Special alternative Low-impact, high-rate-of-fire shotgun Close-lane defense when a player is assigned to hold enemies at short range
Heavy Sleeper Simulant Very high theoretical precision damage during a stationary Vosik window
Heavy alternative Gjallarhorn or a legendary rocket launcher Easier burst when movement makes precision hits unreliable
Heavy control Dark-Drinker Captain control and close-range groups on the Siege Engine and Aksis

Primary weapons: explosive rounds versus scouts

An explosive-round hand cannon is the most forgiving general primary. The extra blast means a body shot still contributes against a moving Vandal, and Shanks do not offer a critical hit location to reward careful aim. A high-impact explosive scout rifle is the better choice when the encounter keeps you at long range or when special-ammo drops are inconsistent. Scouts trade some close-range forgiveness for reach and a larger practical ammunition reserve.

Sniper rifles and shotguns

High-impact snipers such as Ex Machina or Event Horizon should be distributed so the team retains enough precision coverage for majors, turrets and monitors. A shotgun can protect a close lane, but too many players sacrificing sniper coverage leaves the team unable to remove distant threats quickly. Agree on lane assignments before the pull rather than discovering the gap after the first turret appears.

Encounter-by-encounter loadouts

Vosik, the Archpriest

Vosik alternates between add pressure and damage windows, so use the explosive primary to keep Shanks and Vandals from overwhelming the room and reserve sniper ammunition for majors or monitors. During a reliable damage window, Sleeper Simulant gives the highest theoretical burst when the user can land precision hits. If players are moving between safe positions or cannot hold a clean line of sight, Gjallarhorn or another legendary rocket launcher is more forgiving. A Defender Titan’s Weapons of Light bubble can be placed where the damage group naturally gathers, but never force the team to stand in a dangerous location merely to reach the buff.

  • Keep at least one high-impact sniper on each side that has a major or monitor to remove.
  • Use explosive primaries to thin Shanks before they occupy the movement lanes.
  • Choose Sleeper only when the player can maintain precision aim; use rockets when movement is the larger risk.
  • Save tether and Stormcaller clears for the wave that threatens the next safe rotation, not after the team is already surrounded.

The Siege Engine

The Siege Engine combines traversal, turret work, a Devil Walker and Captain-heavy close combat. Dark-Drinker is the standout heavy for Captains and nearby groups because its sweeping attacks control space without requiring a stationary target. Rockets or a machine gun can cover broad crowds, and snipers remain valuable for turrets and the Devil Walker’s exposed targets. Keep a long-range primary available even if your assigned job is melee support; the encounter can separate players across the machine and its approach lanes.

  • Assign sniper users to turrets and the Devil Walker rather than asking every player to rush the objective.
  • Use Dark-Drinker to intercept Captains before they reach a player carrying or repairing the objective.
  • Use rockets or a machine gun when clustered enemies, rather than a single major, are the immediate threat.
  • Do not let a shotgun-heavy group lose the ability to answer distant turrets.

Aksis, Archon Prime

Aksis places a premium on surviving teleport damage windows and controlling Captains around the plate system. The Heroic guide’s preferred heavy is Dark-Drinker for Captain control and close-range damage when Aksis teleports nearby. Razelighter is a secondary sword option. Keep high-impact snipers for majors and any target that must be removed before the next teleport, while explosive primaries handle the steady flow of Shanks and Vandals.

Nightstalker invisibility helps a player reach a plate or recover from a dangerous position, and a Defender bubble can create a deliberate damage point if it does not interfere with plate movement. Aksis rewards disciplined callouts more than a single perfect weapon: identify the next plate, announce the teleport location and keep at least one player free to handle a Captain.

Armor, Defense and Light Level

Survivability and recovery should come before a matching fashion set while you are learning. The historical normal raid armor is listed around 365–385 Defense, while Spliced/Heroic armor is listed around 380–400 Defense. These are Destiny 1 Defense values from the 2016-era raid, not Destiny 2 Power levels and not a current requirement for a modern game.

Normal Wrath of the Machine recommended Light Level 370. Heroic listed 380. Treat those figures as the raid’s original guidance: entering below them makes incoming damage and survival checks harsher, while meeting them does not replace encounter knowledge. Raise the armor and weapon values you can use consistently rather than wearing a lower-stat piece solely because it belongs to a particular set.

Normal and Spliced/Heroic armor rewards

The raid drops normal armor and higher-level Spliced/Heroic armor. Completing a full normal set unlocks its associated cosmetic shader reward, and completing a full Heroic set unlocks the Heroic shader reward. Mixing normal and Spliced pieces does not satisfy either full-set requirement, so keep separate sets if the cosmetic unlock matters to you.

How to prepare a Heroic loadout

  1. Reach the historical target. Aim for Light 380, the listed Heroic recommendation, while remembering that this number belongs to Destiny 1’s 2016 progression system.
  2. Reserve your roles. Confirm at least one Defender Titan, one Nightstalker and one player dedicated to Stormcaller-style add clear or an equivalent survival substitute.
  3. Cover every range. Bring an explosive hand cannon or scout, a high-impact sniper and a heavy suited to the encounter. Do not let all six players select close-range weapons.
  4. Assign heavy weapons by encounter. Plan Sleeper or rockets for Vosik, Dark-Drinker for Captain control on the Siege Engine and Aksis, and crowd-clearing heavy weapons where the room demands them.
  5. Check recovery before damage. If a player repeatedly dies while carrying, plating or reaching a teleport, improve survivability or change the subclass before chasing a higher damage ceiling.
  6. Carry backup ammunition plans. Coordinate special and heavy drops, avoid wasting sniper rounds on minor enemies, and use primary weapons for targets that do not justify scarce ammunition.

Rewards worth building around

Outbreak Prime is the headline exotic chase, while the SIVA-themed legendary pool gives the raid long-term value beyond a single clear. Named rewards include Chaos Dogma, Genesis Chain, Steel Medulla, Fever and Remedy, Ex Machina, Quantiplasm, Ether Nova, Zeal Vector, Sound and Fury and If Materia.

Reward Availability or association stated for the raid
Outbreak Prime Exotic pulse rifle and the principal named exotic chase
Ex Machina Associated with Heroic/Vosik in the reward table
Chaos Dogma, Genesis Chain, Steel Medulla Named SIVA-themed raid weapons
Fever and Remedy, Quantiplasm, Ether Nova Named legendary raid weapons
Zeal Vector, Sound and Fury, If Materia Named legendary raid weapons

Several of the legendary weapons are listed as available in both modes, while Ex Machina is specifically associated with Heroic/Vosik in the reward table. If you are assembling a practical loadout rather than collecting every drop, prioritize a high-impact sniper, a reliable explosive primary and a heavy that fills the role your team is missing.

Common loadout mistakes and fixes

Six players use the same damage weapon

A room full of identical precision weapons can look powerful on paper but fail when Shanks swarm, a Captain reaches the objective or the team must move. Keep at least one player on add-clear duty, one on close-range control and enough snipers to answer majors and turrets.

Everyone chooses a shotgun

Shotguns are useful for a close lane, not as a complete team plan. Replace some shotguns with high-impact snipers so turrets, monitors and distant majors do not dictate the encounter.

Sleeper is used during chaotic movement

Sleeper’s theoretical damage matters only when precision hits are practical. If the damage group is constantly rotating or losing line of sight, use Gjallarhorn or a legendary rocket launcher for more dependable burst.

Armor is selected for appearance alone

Matching armor has a cosmetic benefit, but a survivable build clears more reliably than a lower-Defense set chosen only for its look. Keep a full matching set separately if you want the shader while wearing the pieces that best support your current role.

The team enters Heroic without callouts

Heroic loadouts cannot compensate for silent plate, teleport and Captain assignments. Before starting, name the bubble location, tether user, runner, sniper lanes and heavy-weapon plan for each encounter.

Final loadout blueprint

A balanced Wrath of the Machine team brings Defender support, Nightstalker control, Stormcaller add clear, explosive-round primaries, high-impact snipers and encounter-specific heavy weapons. Use Sleeper Simulant when Vosik’s damage window is stable, rockets when movement makes precision unreliable, and Dark-Drinker when Captains and close-range control define the Siege Engine or Aksis. Wear the most survivable armor you can field at the historical 370 normal or 380 Heroic target, then pursue complete normal or Spliced sets and the raid’s SIVA weapons as progression rewards.
