Usually, yes: on a home network using WPA2 Personal, the password you enter to connect is the Wi-Fi password, also called the network password or wireless key. The distinction is that WPA2 is the network’s security mode, while the password is the credential used to join it. Your router’s admin password is separate and is used to access its settings.
What “WPA2 password” means
WPA2 is a security mode, not a separate universal password. When someone asks for a WPA2 password, they generally mean the Wi-Fi or network password for a network configured to use WPA2 Personal. Router screens may use labels such as “Wi-Fi password,” “network password” or “wireless key”; wording varies by manufacturer. Apple’s router security recommendations explain the role of the security setting, while the FTC’s home Wi-Fi guidance distinguishes the network password from router access credentials.
Wi-Fi password, security type and router admin password are different
- Wi-Fi or network password: The credential a device uses to join the wireless network.
- Security type: The mode the network uses, such as WPA2. On some devices, this is selected or displayed separately from the password. Google’s instructions for joining a hidden network list the network name, password and security type as separate details (Google support).
- Router admin password: The credential used to sign in to the router’s management settings. It is not necessarily the Wi-Fi password, even if the two happen to match.
So if a phone or laptop asks for the WPA2 password, try the current Wi-Fi password for that network. If it asks you to choose a security type as well, that setting is not another name for the password.
If the Wi-Fi password is rejected
- Check the network name (SSID). Confirm that you selected the intended network, especially if several nearby networks have similar names.
- Re-enter the current password carefully. Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive, so check capitalization and any easily confused characters. Apple’s password help also recommends checking that you have the correct password.
- For a hidden network, match the security type too. The network name, password and security type are distinct connection details; the security selection does not replace the password (Google support).
- Look for the saved or documented password. Check a device already connected to the network, the router label or documentation, or ask the person or internet provider who set it up. If you administer the router, its maker’s app or configuration webpage may let you view or change the network password. Steps differ by manufacturer (Apple; FTC).
- Separate connection trouble from settings access. If you can join Wi-Fi but cannot sign in to the router’s management page, you may be entering the admin password incorrectly rather than the Wi-Fi password.
Choose a security mode for the router
If you are changing router settings, the mode and the password are separate choices. Apple’s current recommendations prioritize WPA3 Personal when supported; WPA2/WPA3 Transitional can accommodate older devices, and WPA2 Personal (AES) is an option when a more secure mode is unavailable. Compatibility depends on the router and client devices, so follow the manufacturer’s current instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Security mode | When it fits | Compatibility and guidance |
|---|---|---|
| WPA3 Personal | Use when the router and connected devices support it. | Apple describes it as the newest and most secure protocol currently available for Wi-Fi devices. |
| WPA2/WPA3 Transitional | Useful when newer and older devices need to share a network. | WPA3-capable devices use WPA3; older devices can use WPA2 Personal (AES). |
| WPA2 Personal (AES) | Use when a more secure mode is unavailable. | If the router lets you choose a cipher, Apple advises AES. |
These recommendations are from Apple’s router and access point guidance. Apple advises against deprecated options including WEP, WPA Personal, WPA/WPA2 mixed modes and TKIP. The FTC likewise recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal; for an older router without either option, check for software updates and consider replacing it if it cannot support either mode (FTC guidance).

Devices already connected may need the new password before they can reconnect. For Nest Wifi and Google Wifi, Google says connected devices are disconnected until each is updated with the new password. Other routers and devices may behave differently. See Google’s password-change instructions for those products.
