The most useful way to collect client feedback in WordPress is a visual review workflow: give the client a scoped link, let them click or mark up the page, capture a screenshot and context, then track each comment through resolution. Visual-feedback plugins are designed for this job. Survey, rating and feedback-button plugins are better when you need opinions from general visitors rather than comments tied to a specific page element.

This guide shows how to choose the right approach, let clients comment without a WordPress account, support Elementor, Bricks or Gutenberg projects, and turn scattered notes into an actionable review queue.

What “feedback” means on a WordPress site

“Feedback” covers several different jobs, and choosing the wrong type of plugin creates unnecessary friction. A client reviewing a landing page needs to point at a heading, image, spacing issue or broken interaction. A visitor answering a poll needs a form, rating scale or question list. A product team collecting feature requests needs voting and prioritisation.

  • Private client review: page-specific comments, annotations, screenshots, replies and approval.
  • Bug reporting: reproducible issue details, device or viewport context, priority and status.
  • Public visitor feedback: ratings, surveys, polls or a feedback button.
  • Feature requests: a queue where ideas can be submitted and voted on.

For website handoff and design review, visual-feedback plugins are the closest fit because the comment remains connected to the page being discussed. The WordPress.org feedback taxonomy reflects these separate use cases: it lists visual review, bug-reporting, ratings, surveys and feature-voting products under related feedback categories.

Visual client-feedback plugins compared

The following options have documented support for review links or page annotations. Their capabilities differ mainly in access friction, data ownership and workflow depth.

Tool Best fit Documented capabilities Distinctive strength
Dotance Website Feedback Agencies wanting a simple client review link Whole-site or scoped review links; pinned comments; automatic screenshots; markup; replies; assignments; resolution; email notifications; no client account Frictionless access and an inbox-style workflow
LocalFeedback Teams that require self-hosting and granular workflow Pins; text highlights; boxes; screenshots; device and viewport data; threaded replies; open, in-progress and resolved states; priority; tags; teams; passwords; review links; site modes Data ownership and detailed triage controls
Reviso Sites built with Bricks, Elementor or Gutenberg Pinned feedback across the site; builder-aware panels; no-login review links; one-click resolve; signed sign-off; 14-day Pro trial without a card Builder compatibility and approval/sign-off

These are documented feature descriptions, not an independent performance test. Features, trials and compatibility can change, so verify the current WordPress.org listing or vendor documentation before committing a client project.

Dotance: the lowest-friction review link

Dotance is aimed at agencies that want a client to open one link and review a whole site or a defined scope. Its listing describes pinned comments, automatic screenshots, markup, replies, assignments, resolution and email notifications. It also states that clients do not need an account, browser extension or monthly SaaS bill. That combination is useful when the main risk is that a client will abandon review because setup feels like work.

LocalFeedback: self-hosted records and deeper triage

LocalFeedback describes itself as a self-hosted feedback and annotation tool for the build and review phase of a WordPress project. Its FAQ says feedback, screenshots and settings are stored in the WordPress installation. It supports pins, text highlights, boxes, screenshots, device and viewport data, threaded replies and open, in-progress and resolved states. Priority, tags and team features help a larger agency divide work without moving the review into a separate tracker. Passwords and review links provide different access levels for sensitive projects.

Reviso: builder-aware review and sign-off

Reviso is positioned for sites made with Bricks, Elementor or Gutenberg. Its listing describes feedback pins across the site, builder-aware panels, no-login review links, one-click resolution and a signed sign-off. The listing also advertises a 14-day Pro trial without requiring a card. This is a practical fit when approval evidence matters as much as issue collection, but confirm the current trial terms before presenting them to a client.

Can clients leave comments without a WordPress login?

Yes, a no-login review link is a documented capability for Dotance and Reviso. LocalFeedback supports review links and passwords, allowing a team to choose a more controlled access method when a project is confidential. A no-login link reduces friction, but anyone who obtains the link may be able to view or submit feedback depending on the plugin’s current access settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the least restrictive option that still protects the work:

  • Early internal review: use a password or logged-in access if unreleased content is sensitive.
  • Client review: use a scoped no-login link when speed matters and the link can be shared privately.
  • Public launch: turn off the review link or replace it with a visitor-feedback form after sign-off.

Test the exact client journey in a private browser window before sending the link. Confirm that the client can open the intended pages, add a comment, attach or generate the expected screenshot, and submit without accidentally seeing the WordPress dashboard.

How visual annotations make feedback actionable

A sentence such as “the hero looks wrong on mobile” leaves too much interpretation. A pin on the hero image, a box around the affected area, a highlighted phrase or an attached screenshot gives the implementer a location and visual reference. Device and viewport data add context when the issue appears only at a particular screen size.

Require enough context for every issue:

  • The page URL or review scope.
  • A pin, highlight, box or screenshot showing the affected element.
  • A short description of the expected result.
  • Device or viewport information when the issue is responsive.
  • Priority and an owner when several people are implementing changes.

Do not force every client to describe technical details they cannot see. The review tool should capture the page context automatically where it supports that feature; the client can then focus on the desired change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing between self-hosted and vendor-hosted data

Data location is a first-order decision, not an implementation detail. LocalFeedback explicitly says that feedback, screenshots and settings remain in the WordPress installation. That can simplify ownership, retention and access policies because the records stay with the site. It also means the WordPress installation and its backups become responsible for preserving review history.

The supplied feature descriptions do not establish the storage location for Dotance or Reviso. Treat that as a question to resolve with the vendor before a project begins: ask where screenshots and comments are stored, how long they are retained, how exports work and what happens if the plugin is removed. Hosted services may offer integrations that are not listed here, but they involve transferring review data to the provider.

Step-by-step: set up a client review workflow

  1. Define the feedback job. Decide whether you need private design approval, bug reports, public opinions or feature requests. If the output must be a rating, poll or questionnaire, choose a structured survey or form plugin instead of a visual annotation tool.
  2. Select the access model. Choose a no-login link for a low-friction client review, or use a password or logged-in access for sensitive work. Decide whether the client should see the whole site or only a defined scope.
  3. Install and configure the plugin. Add the selected plugin from the WordPress admin Plugins screen, then enable its review or feedback mode. Set the review scope, notification recipients and any password or team controls available in that plugin.
  4. Create a review link. Generate a link for the relevant pages or site mode. Give the link a clear internal label so staff can distinguish a staging review from a final approval round.
  5. Test on desktop and mobile. Open the link while logged out, check the pages the client is expected to review, place a sample pin and submit it. Repeat on a phone or narrow viewport to confirm that annotations and screenshots still work.
  6. Send review instructions. Ask the client to click the page element, add a concise description and include the expected change. For responsive issues, ask them to mention the device or orientation if the tool does not capture it automatically.
  7. Triage the inbox. Assign each item, set a priority where available, reply when clarification is needed and move work through open, in-progress and resolved states. Avoid copying the same issue into multiple systems unless a team member needs it in a separate project tracker.
  8. Implement and verify. Make the change, reopen the page at the reported viewport and reply on the original thread. Mark the item resolved only after checking the result, not merely after editing the page.
  9. Capture approval. For projects that require formal acceptance, use a signed sign-off feature where available. Preserve the review record according to your client agreement, then disable or retire the review link when the review period ends.

When a survey or rating plugin is the better choice

Use a structured feedback tool when the respondent does not need to point at a specific page element. Examples include a post-purchase questionnaire, a “Was this article helpful?” prompt, a star rating or a poll about preferred features. These tools can reach many visitors, while visual review tools are designed for a smaller group of stakeholders working on a particular site.

WordPress.org directory snapshots illustrate the scale of some categories: UserFeedback showed more than 200,000 active installations in 2026, kk Star Ratings more than 70,000, and Marker.io more than 4,000. These figures are directory snapshots that may change; they are not market-share measurements and do not establish quality or suitability for your project.

Common failure modes and fixes

The client cannot open the review

Check that the link is still active, the review scope includes the requested page and any password was copied correctly. Test while logged out and from a second network before assuming the client’s browser is at fault.

Comments are too vague to implement

Require a pin, highlight, box or screenshot and ask for the desired outcome rather than a general judgement. Add priority and an owner so “make it better” does not remain in the queue without a next action.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Responsive bugs cannot be reproduced

Ask for the device, orientation and approximate viewport. Prefer a tool that records device and viewport data automatically, then verify the fix at that same context.

The inbox becomes a second project-management system

Use the feedback tool for page-specific evidence and resolution. Keep broader scheduling, budgets and release planning in the system your team already uses, and link back to the original feedback item instead of duplicating every discussion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review links expose unfinished work

Replace an unrestricted link with a password or logged-in access, narrow the scope and confirm that staging content is not publicly indexed. Retire the link after sign-off and keep only the records your retention policy requires.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose a visual-feedback plugin if comments must be tied to page elements.
  • Choose Dotance when a simple, no-account review link and inbox workflow are the priority.
  • Choose LocalFeedback when self-hosted storage, device context and granular statuses, priorities, tags or teams matter.
  • Choose Reviso when Bricks, Elementor or Gutenberg compatibility and signed approval are central.
  • Use passwords or logged-in access for sensitive reviews; use no-login links only when the sharing risk is acceptable.
  • Choose a survey, rating or feedback-form plugin when respondents do not need to annotate a page.
  • Confirm current capabilities, storage terms and trials before deployment because directory listings and product features are subject to change.
