Choose a Race Change if you want to change the race of an existing character and keep playing that character. Start a new character if you want a separate character, its own progression, or the chance to experience a starting path. Before deciding, check that your target race is unlocked and available for your class, then compare the current regional Race Change price with the value of keeping your existing character.
What a Race Change does—and what it does not establish
Blizzard’s Race Change service applies to a selected existing character. You choose a new race and appearance; changing the character’s name is optional. Blizzard describes the final step as requiring a new appearance and including an optional Name Change. Read Blizzard’s service announcement.
This makes Race Change the direct choice when the character itself matters to you. The available information does not establish every downstream effect or restriction, so don’t treat the service description as a blanket guarantee about every piece of character data. Review the in-game service details before confirming.
When to change race and when to start over

Check race, class, and unlock eligibility first
A Race Change does not mean every race is available to every class. Blizzard says the available new race depends on the character’s class. Verify your exact target race and class in the in-game service interface; a complete current race-and-class eligibility chart is not established here.

Some races may also require an unlock. For example, Blizzard’s The War Within notes describe unlocking Earthen characters after completing their quests and the overall level-up campaign. That is an Earthen-specific example, not a universal unlock rule. Check the current requirements for the race you want before choosing either option.
What starting a new character means
A new character has a separate beginning rather than continuing the selected character. Blizzard describes Exile’s Reach as the default starting experience for eligible players who have never created or leveled a character. Veterans and returning players can opt out and begin in their race’s starting area. Is Race Change worth the price?
Race Change is a paid digital service, and Blizzard says an active subscription or game time is required. Its current price depends on region and may change. Blizzard listed a U.S. promotion of $25 for one Race Change or $50 for three in an announcement dated August 22, 2024; those were promotional prices at that time, not current price guidance. Check Blizzard’s service page and confirm the price shown for your region and WoW version before buying.
Weigh that current price against what you gain by keeping the existing character. If preserving that character is worth the cost and the service offers your desired race for its class, Race Change fits. If you would rather have an additional character or avoid the service charge, create a new one.

Make the decision in this order
- Decide whether you want to keep the existing character. If yes, investigate Race Change; if you want a separate character, create one.
- Check the exact race and class combination in the in-game Race Change interface. Do not assume the target race is eligible.
- Check whether the race is unlocked. Look up its current requirements if it is not available.
- Compare the current regional service price with the value you place on keeping the existing character.
- If you choose a new character, review the available starting path during creation; starting options can differ by experience, race, and class.
