Whether a race can be a particular class depends on the exact World of Warcraft game context, and some choices also depend on faction or an unlock. Blizzard’s September 2026 race-and-class chart is specifically for World of Warcraft: Forever; it is not a universal chart for every WoW edition or mode. Check the rules for the game you plan to play, then confirm your choice in that client’s character-creation screen.
How to check whether your race can be your class
- Choose the exact game context. Identify the edition or mode you intend to play. Do not apply a chart for WoW: Forever to Retail, Classic, or another context without confirmation.
- Check the race-and-class intersection. In the relevant current chart, find your race and see whether your class is listed. For a race with faction variants, check the faction you will select, too.
- Check for a race unlock. Some races require a campaign or another account-level condition before they can be selected.
- Confirm in the character-creation screen. The in-game screen is the practical final check for your client and account. Blizzard previously advised players to hover over an Allied Race icon to inspect its requirements; interface behavior may differ by client version.
Class fantasy, role, and appearance can help you decide what to play, but they do not establish whether a combination is eligible.
WoW: Forever race and class chart
Blizzard’s September 22, 2026 article lists nine classes and separate Alliance and Horde options. Its legend says, “An X indicates that the listed race can choose that class.” The table below transcribes the available classes from that article; it applies to WoW: Forever, not automatically to other WoW game contexts. Why faction and unlocks can change what you can create

In WoW: Forever, Skyborne are selected as Horde or Alliance during character creation. The Horde Windshaper option lists Shaman, while Alliance High-Order Skyborne lists Mage. Both factions list Druid, Hunter, Rogue, and Warrior. Blizzard’s Skyborne preview.

Some races require a campaign
Blizzard’s March 3, 2026 Midnight launch announcement says Haranir are unlocked by completing the Harandar zone level-up campaign. It also says Void Elf Demon Hunter access comes through a short quest line from the Midnight pre-expansion update. These are content-specific requirements, so use the current in-game details for the character and account you are creating. Blizzard’s Midnight launch announcement.
Allied Race guidance has changed over time
Blizzard’s July 2023 Dragonflight update removed the earlier Allied Race unlock restrictions except for a level requirement, and said that an account with a level-40 character could unlock Allied Races. That is the rule stated in that 2023 update, not a guarantee about every current client or account state. Check the present character-creation screen rather than relying on old guides that present reputation or achievement prerequisites as universal current rules. Blizzard’s July 2023 update notes.

Why older race-and-class guides may be wrong
Rules and available combinations have changed, and the exact game context matters. In October 2022, Blizzard announced that all playable races could become Mages, Priests, or Rogues in the relevant Dragonflight context, including for players without that expansion. That change is one reason older lists may omit combinations that later became available. It does not turn a chart for one game context into a universal chart. What to verify before you spend time customizing
- Game edition or mode: Confirm the chart is for the client you intend to play.
- Race and class: Make sure the specific combination appears as available in that context.
- Faction: Check faction-specific variants, especially if the race offers a different form or class list by faction.
- Unlock status: Look for a current campaign, level, or account requirement.
- Your account in game: Confirm the race and class are selectable in the character-creation screen, where the client can reflect your current eligibility.
