Short answer: Alliance and Horde characters can play together in supported organized groups, but Blizzard still separates cross-faction premade groups from random matchmaking. Party Sync helps friends align quest phases and levels; it does not automatically unlock every dungeon queue. Chromie Time controls which timeline dungeons the Dungeon Finder searches, while Timewalking is a separate, rotating event queue.
Can Alliance and Horde players group together?
Yes, with limits. Blizzard’s cross-faction system, introduced in the 9.2.5 era, is designed primarily for organized groups rather than unrestricted matchmaking. You can invite an opposite-faction player directly when you are BattleTag or Real ID friends, or when both of you belong to a cross-faction WoW Community.
How to invite the other faction
- Add the player as a BattleTag or Real ID friend, or join the same cross-faction WoW Community.
- Open your social panel, select the friend or community member, and choose the party-invite option.
- Once the invitation is accepted, form the party and enter a supported instance or activity.
Cross-faction characters remain unfriendly to one another in the open world. In supported instances, they become friendly enough to assist each other, trade loot, and earn shared achievements. Treat this as an instance-based relationship, not a permanent change to your faction alignment.

The important distinction is premade versus random matchmade. Blizzard’s 9.2.5 notes state that eligible premade Group Finder listings can include both factions, while several automated queues remain faction-restricted.
#1 Best Overall
- Great product!
| Activity or method | Cross-faction status in Blizzard’s 9.2.5 rules | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Premade Mythic-dungeon groups | Supported | A listing can accept Alliance and Horde players. The listing leader may restrict applicants to the same faction. |
| Premade raids | Supported | Both factions can apply to an eligible listing, subject to the leader’s restrictions. |
| Rated arenas and rated battlegrounds | Supported for premade listings | Organized groups can include both factions under the same listing rules. |
| Random Heroic dungeons | Same-faction matchmaking | The automated queue does not use the same cross-faction rule as a premade group. |
| Skirmishes | Same-faction matchmaking | Do not assume an opposite-faction friend can be added through the random queue. |
| Random Battlegrounds | Same-faction matchmaking | Cross-faction premade access and random matchmaking are separate systems. |
If a mixed-faction party cannot enter a particular activity, first determine whether you are trying to use a premade listing or an automated queue. Changing the group from random matchmaking to a supported premade activity may solve the problem; it does not make every queue cross-faction.
Are any instances excluded from cross-faction parties?
Yes. Blizzard’s 9.2.5 notes identify the following instances as not cross-faction:
- Trial of the Champion
- Trial of the Crusader
- Vault of Archavon
- Icecrown Citadel
- Baradin Hold
- Siege of Boralus
- Battle of Dazar’alor
- Darkmaul Citadel, the Exile’s Reach dungeon
This is the exclusion list published in those notes, not a guarantee that it is an exhaustive, permanently current list. Instance rules can change with patches, so check the live client when one specific legacy or leveling dungeon is the reason for your group.

Why can’t my opposite-faction friend help me outside the dungeon?
The system is intentionally opt-in and instance-focused. Opposite-faction party members remain unfriendly while traveling through the open world, so you should not expect normal open-world assistance, faction-neutral questing, or unrestricted interaction everywhere. After entering a supported instance, the game changes the relationship so party members can cooperate, trade eligible loot, and receive shared achievements.
This design also explains why forming the party successfully does not prove that every activity will accept it. The social connection and the instance’s eligibility are separate checks.
What does Party Sync do?
Party Sync is a questing and group-leveling feature. Its documented purpose is to align party members’ quest state and phase so friends can progress together even when their characters do not normally see the same version of the world.
What happens when Party Sync is enabled?
- Party members can be aligned to a common quest state and world phase.
- Eligible quests can be replayed with friends for rewards appropriate to the adjusted level.
- Characters are temporarily scaled: stats are reduced and abilities can be limited to match the synchronized level.
Blizzard’s feature preview specifically excludes repeatable quests such as daily quests and World Quests from the replay behavior. The preview dates from 2019, so treat the broad function as reliable but do not assume that every quest is eligible under the current client.
Does Party Sync unlock cross-faction or every dungeon queue?
No. Party Sync addresses quest state, phasing, and temporary level adjustment. It is not a blanket permission for opposite-faction random matchmaking, and it does not establish that every dungeon is available to every level or timeline. If the problem is a missing dungeon queue, inspect faction rules, timeline selection, event availability, and character eligibility separately.

Can friends in different Chromie Time timelines queue together?
Blizzard’s Chromie Time guidance says the Dungeon Finder can offer dungeons from the timeline selected by the player. When party members have selected different timelines, the group can queue for dungeons from any timeline represented in the party.
If the selected timeline’s queue takes too long, the system may offer to broaden the search to additional timelines. Accepting that expansion can reduce waiting, but it changes the pool of dungeons the finder considers. The option is a queue-broadening suggestion, not a change to the characters’ historical campaign choices.
How to troubleshoot a timeline queue
- Confirm that every character is actually in the party before opening Dungeon Finder.
- Check each player’s selected Chromie Time timeline.
- Open the Dungeon Finder and review the dungeon list the party is being offered.
- If the queue remains slow, read the prompt offering a wider timeline search and decide whether a shorter wait is more important than keeping the narrower pool.
- If no queue appears, verify that the characters meet the live level and expansion requirements; the historical guide’s original thresholds should not be treated as current in October 2026.
How is Timewalking different from Chromie Time?
Chromie Time is a leveling and timeline-selection system. Timewalking is a separate, scheduled event queue that temporarily makes older content available at an event-adjusted difficulty and reward scale. Being in a Chromie Time timeline does not mean the Timewalking event is active, and an active Timewalking event does not require every party member to choose the same Chromie timeline.
Current menu path for Timewalking
Blizzard’s July 2026 instructions use this interface path:
Rank #4
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Open Group Finder with the default I hotkey, or use the social menu.
- Choose Dungeon Finder.
- Open the Type dropdown and select Timewalking.
- Choose Find Group.
In that article, enemies and loot scale to the player’s level. The event can award items at a Heroic-level quality and reputation, depending on the live event rules. Those reward details are tied to the event documentation and can change.
Why you may not see Timewalking
- The event may not be active in the current weekly rotation.
- Your character may not meet the live event’s level or expansion eligibility requirement.
- You may be viewing a normal Dungeon Finder type rather than the Timewalking type.
- A group or role restriction may be preventing the queue from forming.
The weekly expansion and dungeon schedule in Blizzard’s July 2026 article is historical and had expired by October 2026. Use the rotation shown in the live client rather than reusing that July schedule.
Premade group or random queue: which should you use?
| Your situation | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You already have Alliance and Horde friends | Premade Group Finder listing or direct invitation | Organized listings are the part of the system designed for cross-faction play. |
| You want a random Heroic dungeon | Dungeon Finder random queue | Expect same-faction matchmaking under the cited 9.2.5 rules. |
| You are leveling in different historical expansions | Party Sync, then Dungeon Finder | Sync can align quest phase and temporary level; timeline rules still apply to the queue. |
| You want older event dungeons | Dungeon Finder → Timewalking | Timewalking is an event type, not a Chromie Time setting. |
| You cannot find a specific legacy instance | Check the instance’s current restrictions | The 9.2.5 exclusion list is historical and may not cover later changes. |
What should I check when access fails?
The invitation is rejected
Confirm that you are BattleTag or Real ID friends or share a cross-faction WoW Community. A character merely appearing in another interface or being on the same realm does not replace the documented relationship requirement.
The party exists but cannot enter
Check whether the activity is one of the documented non-cross-faction instances, and whether you are trying to use a same-faction random queue. Leave the queue and test a supported premade activity if your goal is organized cross-faction play.

Quests or NPCs do not match
Use Party Sync when the problem is quest phase or progress state. Remember that repeatable daily content and World Quests are excluded from the replay behavior described in Blizzard’s feature preview.
The dungeon list is wrong for the group
Review Chromie Time selections and the timeline represented by the party. The Dungeon Finder can use represented timelines and may offer to expand the search after a long wait.
Timewalking is missing
Open the Type dropdown and look specifically for Timewalking. If it is absent, check the live event rotation and your character’s current eligibility rather than relying on the July 2026 schedule.

The cross-faction framework, Party Sync description, Chromie Time behavior, and Timewalking navigation above come from Blizzard announcements and guides published between 2019 and July 2026. They provide a useful baseline, but they are not a complete October 2026 matrix of every dungeon’s level, expansion, faction, or character requirements.
For a patch-sensitive question, use the live Dungeon Finder labels and error messages as the final authority. A queue that appears in one patch can be renamed, restricted, or removed in another, and a historical article’s level thresholds should not be presented as current without a newer Blizzard confirmation.
