Cataclysm Classic comes immediately after Wrath of the Lich King Classic. Once you have followed Cataclysm’s progression, the next expansion is Mists of Pandaria Classic. Cataclysm Classic launched on May 20, 2024, and Mists of Pandaria Classic launched on July 21, 2025.
Blizzard’s December 2025 update confirms that Mists of Pandaria Classic was still receiving progression content, including the Thunder King update. Blizzard has not established an expansion after Mists of Pandaria Classic in the official announcements covered here, so it is the latest confirmed point in this sequence rather than a promise about future Classic releases.
What comes after Wrath Classic?
If you want to follow the WoW Classic progression in release order, play Cataclysm Classic first, then move to Mists of Pandaria Classic. They are not competing branches of the timeline:

Blizzard announced in November 2023 that Classic progression realms would advance from Wrath to Cataclysm. The later launch notice confirms that the transition happened, rather than remaining only a plan. Mists of Pandaria then followed Cataclysm in 2025.

Timeline: from the announcement to the latest update
The transition has several dates worth separating. On November 3, 2023, Blizzard announced that Classic progression realms would advance from Wrath Classic to Cataclysm Classic. That announcement described the planned direction and noted that some changes would reflect player feedback and requests.
The Cataclysm pre-expansion patch went live on May 1, 2024. The full Cataclysm Classic launch followed on May 20, 2024. A pre-expansion patch and a full expansion launch are different milestones: the first prepares systems and the world for the change, while the second marks the arrival of the complete expansion experience.
Mists of Pandaria Classic launched on July 21, 2025. Blizzard’s December 12, 2025 weekly update then confirmed that the expansion was still receiving progression content through the Thunder King update. These dates establish the sequence without requiring an assumption about what Blizzard might announce later.

What Cataclysm changes
Cataclysm is a major setting change rather than a small content update. Its central feature is a reshaped version of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. Questing areas, landscapes and story routes in those continents are revised, so a character moving from Wrath into Cataclysm enters a world that looks and plays differently from the one experienced earlier in Classic.
The expansion raises the level range from 80 to 85 and adds new zones, dungeons and raids. It also introduces two playable races:

Cataclysm Classic also adds Archaeology as a profession and introduces transmogrification, allowing players to use the appearance of eligible equipment while retaining the statistics of the gear they are actually wearing. These features are part of Cataclysm’s identity and help distinguish it from Wrath beyond the level-cap increase.
What to expect when moving from Wrath
A Wrath character’s next expansion target is therefore level 85, not level 90. Cataclysm’s new zones, dungeons and raids provide the progression path between those caps. The world changes are especially important for players who remember the original Classic continents: returning to familiar locations after the Cataclysm transition does not mean finding the same questing experience.
If you are choosing where to spend your time, Cataclysm is the stage for exploring the altered original continents and trying its race, profession and appearance-customization features. It is not a side option that can be skipped while still claiming to follow the chronological progression from Wrath.
Mists of Pandaria Classic: what follows Cataclysm
Launch date and level range
Mists of Pandaria Classic launched on July 21, 2025. It follows Cataclysm in the Classic progression order and raises the level cap from 85 to 90. Blizzard’s launch notice lists new zones, dungeons and raids in addition to the expansion’s new setting and player options.
New setting, race and class
Mists of Pandaria opens the continent of Pandaria. It adds the Pandaren race and the Monk class, giving the expansion a different character-creation and world-building focus from Cataclysm.
Where Cataclysm is defined by the transformation of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, Mists of Pandaria is defined by access to a new continent and its associated zones. Both expansions add the normal progression package of dungeons and raids, but their settings and character features are distinct.

The Thunder King update
Blizzard’s December 12, 2025 weekly update confirms that Mists of Pandaria Classic was still receiving progression content. The Thunder King update included the Isle of Thunder, the Isle of Giants and the Throne of Thunder raid. This is evidence that Mists of Pandaria Classic had progressed beyond its initial launch content by that date.
The update is also the latest dated progression information established by Blizzard’s official notices here. It does not announce a later Classic expansion.

The practical conclusion is simple: choose Cataclysm if you are continuing directly from Wrath, and choose Mists of Pandaria only after Cataclysm in the progression sequence.
Do you have to choose between Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria?
Not if your goal is chronological progression. The official sequence places Mists of Pandaria after Cataclysm, so there is no documented branch in which Mists of Pandaria replaces Cataclysm as the immediate successor to Wrath.
Players may have different personal reasons for focusing on one expansion’s features. Someone interested in the reshaped original continents, Goblins, Worgen, Archaeology or transmogrification is looking at Cataclysm-specific content. Someone interested in Pandaria, Pandaren, Monks or the Thunder King content is looking at Mists of Pandaria-specific content. Those preferences do not change the order in which the expansions occurred.

What should you play if you are returning after a break?
Start with the latest stage you actually want to experience, but use the level caps to orient yourself. A character coming out of Wrath is moving toward level 85 in Cataclysm. After that stage, the next progression target is level 90 in Mists of Pandaria. This makes the choice straightforward for a returning player who wants the complete arc: begin in Cataclysm, then continue into Pandaria.

Blizzard’s Mists of Pandaria Classic launch notice says access is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. That is the relevant official access wording for this progression.
Account terms can change, so verify the current account and subscription information before making a purchase or returning to the game. Blizzard’s announcements do not establish that a physical retail copy is required to follow this progression. They also do not provide a separate, permanent price guarantee for every region or account type.
In practical terms, check the account attached to your World of Warcraft characters, confirm that your subscription or Game Time is active, and review the current Blizzard account page for regional terms. Avoid assuming that an old purchase page or an earlier expansion’s pricing still applies.

That distinction matters because a sequence article should separate released content from future speculation. You can state with confidence that Wrath is followed by Cataclysm and Cataclysm is followed by Mists of Pandaria. You should not state that a later expansion is confirmed unless Blizzard publishes a new announcement.
A practical play-order checklist
- Finish or leave Wrath of the Lich King Classic. Wrath is the starting point for the transition covered by this guide.
- Move to Cataclysm Classic. Its progression raises the level range from 80 to 85 and adds the reshaped Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms, Goblins, Worgen, Archaeology and transmogrification.
- Explore Cataclysm’s new zones, dungeons and raids. These are the content path between the Wrath-era level 80 cap and Cataclysm’s level 85 cap.

- Confusing level caps. Cataclysm moves characters from 80 to 85; Mists of Pandaria moves them from 85 to 90.
- Assuming a future expansion is confirmed. The latest dated notice establishes further Mists of Pandaria content, not a successor beyond it.
- Assuming a physical copy is required. Blizzard’s launch wording points to an active subscription or Game Time, while current account terms should be checked directly.
